Tri godine nakon smrti Arethe Franklin, njoj u čast i slavu, upravo je snimljen film znakovita naslova koji se referira na jedan od njezinih najvećih hitova – "Respect".
Redatelj je Liesl Tommy, a naslovnu ulogu tumači Jennifer Hudson, glumica koju je upravo "kraljica soula" za života zavjetovala da prenese njezin život i glazbu na veliko platno.
I doista, Jennifer Hudson je od kritike proteklih dva tjedna, otkako se film prikazuje u Americi, pobrala hvalospjeve, što se, međutim, ne može reći i za film u cjelini.
Po svemu sudeći, čini se da je nastojanje da se Arethu dostojno prikaže u kraljevskome svjetlu, pojelo dubinu koja se očekuje od svakoga, pa i biografskog filma.

Da je Jenifer Hudson išta manje uvjerljiva, kaže, primjerice Richard Brody, kritičar uglednog The New Yorkera, film sa svojih 140 minuta bi, uza svu svoju informativnost i angažman, potonuo u vrtlogu pojednostavljivanja.
Drama počinje Arethinim djetinjstvom i traumama koje je tada preživjela: smrću svoje majke, silovanjem od strane starijeg muškarca, trudnoćom i rođenjem sina Clarencea u 12. godini života.
Ta užasna formativna iskustva pozadina su Aretine tjeskobe u odrasloj dobi, kojoj su doprinijele i stroge kontrole nad njezinom početnom karijerom i životom koje su provodili njezin otac C.L. Franklin, kojeg glumi Forest Whitaker, a zatim i njezin prvi suprug Ted White, kojeg glumi Marlon Wayans, ali i kasnija kontrola koju su imali producenti bijele glazbe John Hammond (Tate Donovan) i Jerry Wexler (Marc Maron).
Osnovu scenarija kojeg je napisala Tracey Scott Wilson prema priči Callie Khouri, Arethino je dugogodišnje nastojanje da stvara glazbu po svom vlastitom nahođenju, i kao pjevačica i kao vlastiti producent, uz rizik fizičkog i emocionalnog nasilja.
Od samog početka, primjećuje kritičar The New Yorkera, film pati od manjkavosti – još od trenutka kad se djevojčica Aretha pridružuje grandioznoj zabavi svoga oca.

Tamo su i Dinah Washington koju glumi Mary J. Blige i "striko Duke", i tamo Aretha prvi put pokazuje svoj glas "tridesetogodišnjakinje u tijelu desetogodišnje curice".
No nijedna od interakcija s tim velikanima glazbe nije "zagrebana", a ni odnos koji je Aretha imala s majkom nije dublje dotaknut, premda je, znaju biografi, bio važan u formiranju djevojčice.
Tijekom jedne druge očeve zabave Aretha je postala žrtva starijeg muškarca koji ju je silovao, no izgleda da redatelj i preko te traume prelazi prebrzo, nastojeći u film ugurati što više informacija, bez snage da te informacije emocionalno raščlani.
Traumatizirana, ali briljantna dječja pjevačica pojavljuje se kao mlada žena Aretha u najboljem kinematografskom obratu filma, jedinstvenom kružnom kadru širokog poteza smještenom u birminghamskoj crkvi, kojim se najavljuje njezino punoljetstvo uz prisutnost i autoritet Martina Luthera Kinga Juniora, kojega glumi Gilbert Glenn Brown, očeva prijatelja.
I Elizabeth Weitzman iz The Wrapa kao i Tim Grierson iz Screen Dailya dijele mišljenje Richarda Brodyja.

– Film "Respect" neuspješno isprepliće Arethine osobne, političke i profesionalne životne uloge, pribjegavajući pristupu koji njezine značajne trenutke svodi na puka zaustavljanja u biografiji – kaže Grierson. Portretiranje Arethe Franklin, jedne od najvećih pjevačica prošlog stoljeća, zastrašujući je zadatak, ali iako Jennifer Hudson ima snažan glas, ona se ne može ni približiti utjelovljenju bogatstva i raspona Arethina stila.
Da budemo iskreni, možda niti jedan izvođač to ne bi mogao, ali glumicu ometa i scenarij koji na Arethu često gleda više kao na inspirativnu ličnost nego na višeslojnu osobu.
Taj impuls ističe njezine fascinantne neobičnosti i veliku ambiciju, lišavajući je, međutim, onoga što ju je učinilo tako uvjerljivom, kompliciranom umjetnicom, dodaje kritičar Screen Dailya.
Dajući filmu samo 2,5 zvjezdica od moguće četiri, Brian Truitt iz USA Today rekao je da "'Respect' često gubi fokus i drži se vremenske linije bez puno nijansi".
– Film ne bježi od mračnih točaka, ali ih niti ne proširuje. Tako jedna scena nagovještava seksualno zlostavljanje u djetinjstvu, a kasnije se suptilno spominje, iako nikada nije u potpunosti razjašnjena – rekao je Brian Truitt.
Aretha Franklin rođena je 1942. u Memphisu, saveznoj američkoj državi Tennessee. Pjevanjem i sviranjem klavira bavila se od malih nogu, pjevajući gospel u baptističkoj crkvi gdje joj je otac bio pastor. Sa 18 godina počela je pjevati sekularnu glazbu za Columbia Records.

Njezina slava bila je zacementirana 1967. i 1968. godine kada je izdala niz hitova koji su postali klasici, a prva dva Grammyja dobila je za pjesmu "Respect", moćnu obradu originalnog hita Otisa Reddinga, po kojoj film i nosi ime.
Tijekom njezine karijere nije nedostajalo senzacionalističkih naslova, knjiga i biografija u kojima se pisalo o njezinom teškom karakteru, problemima s alkoholom i ljubomori prema ostalim izvođačicama, poput Barbare Streisand ili Tine Turner.
Ali, ništa od tih naslova ne može opovrgnuti njezin dugotrajni glazbeni uspjeh koji pokazuje da "kraljica soula" ni danas, nakon smrti, nije zaboravljena.
Aretha Franklin preminula je 16. kolovoza 2018. u 77. godini života, a na posljednje počivalište na groblju u Detroitu ispraćena je u zlatnom kovčegu, u crvenim štiklama i s lentom na kojoj je pisalo "Kraljica Soula".

Dama s 18 Grammyja
Aretha Franklin je 1972. godine izdala album "Amazing Grace" koji je postao najprodavaniji gospel album do tada. Njezina slava potrajala je tijekom sedamdesetih godina prošlog stoljeća sve do dolaska diskogroznice. Teško razdoblje opadanja popularnosti odrazilo se i u njezinom privatnom životu no uspjeh filma "Blues Brothers" 1980. godine u kojem je pjevala uz komičare Johna Belushija i Dana Aykroyda oživio je njezinu karijeru. Novi album, koji je postao njezin najprodavaniji, izdala je 1985. godine pod nazivom "Who's Zoomin' Who?" na kojemu je hit-pjesma "Freeway of Love" i suradnja s bendom Eurythmics.
Osvojila je svoju 18. Grammy nagradu 2008. godine za hit-pjesmu "Never Gonna Break my Faith" na kojem je surađivala s Mary J. Blige. Godinu dana kasnije pjevala je i na inauguraciji Baracka Obame koji je viđen kako briše suze tijekom njezine izvedbe. S 18 osvojenih Grammyja smatra se jednom od najnagrađivanijih pjevačica u povijesti.

Tri godine nakon smrti Arethe Franklin, njoj u čast i slavu, upravo je snimljen film znakovita naslova koji se referira na jedan od njezinih najvećih hitova – "Respect".
Redatelj je Liesl Tommy, a naslovnu ulogu tumači Jennifer Hudson, glumica koju je upravo "kraljica soula" za života zavjetovala da prenese njezin život i glazbu na veliko platno.
I doista, Jennifer Hudson je od kritike proteklih dva tjedna, otkako se film prikazuje u Americi, pobrala hvalospjeve, što se, međutim, ne može reći i za film u cjelini.
Po svemu sudeći, čini se da je nastojanje da se Arethu dostojno prikaže u kraljevskome svjetlu, pojelo dubinu koja se očekuje od svakoga, pa i biografskog filma.

Da je Jenifer Hudson išta manje uvjerljiva, kaže, primjerice Richard Brody, kritičar uglednog The New Yorkera, film sa svojih 140 minuta bi, uza svu svoju informativnost i angažman, potonuo u vrtlogu pojednostavljivanja.
Drama počinje Arethinim djetinjstvom i traumama koje je tada preživjela: smrću svoje majke, silovanjem od strane starijeg muškarca, trudnoćom i rođenjem sina Clarencea u 12. godini života.
Ta užasna formativna iskustva pozadina su Aretine tjeskobe u odrasloj dobi, kojoj su doprinijele i stroge kontrole nad njezinom početnom karijerom i životom koje su provodili njezin otac C.L. Franklin, kojeg glumi Forest Whitaker, a zatim i njezin prvi suprug Ted White, kojeg glumi Marlon Wayans, ali i kasnija kontrola koju su imali producenti bijele glazbe John Hammond (Tate Donovan) i Jerry Wexler (Marc Maron).
Osnovu scenarija kojeg je napisala Tracey Scott Wilson prema priči Callie Khouri, Arethino je dugogodišnje nastojanje da stvara glazbu po svom vlastitom nahođenju, i kao pjevačica i kao vlastiti producent, uz rizik fizičkog i emocionalnog nasilja.
Od samog početka, primjećuje kritičar The New Yorkera, film pati od manjkavosti – još od trenutka kad se djevojčica Aretha pridružuje grandioznoj zabavi svoga oca.

Tamo su i Dinah Washington koju glumi Mary J. Blige i "striko Duke", i tamo Aretha prvi put pokazuje svoj glas "tridesetogodišnjakinje u tijelu desetogodišnje curice".
No nijedna od interakcija s tim velikanima glazbe nije "zagrebana", a ni odnos koji je Aretha imala s majkom nije dublje dotaknut, premda je, znaju biografi, bio važan u formiranju djevojčice.
Tijekom jedne druge očeve zabave Aretha je postala žrtva starijeg muškarca koji ju je silovao, no izgleda da redatelj i preko te traume prelazi prebrzo, nastojeći u film ugurati što više informacija, bez snage da te informacije emocionalno raščlani.
Traumatizirana, ali briljantna dječja pjevačica pojavljuje se kao mlada žena Aretha u najboljem kinematografskom obratu filma, jedinstvenom kružnom kadru širokog poteza smještenom u birminghamskoj crkvi, kojim se najavljuje njezino punoljetstvo uz prisutnost i autoritet Martina Luthera Kinga Juniora, kojega glumi Gilbert Glenn Brown, očeva prijatelja.

– Film "Respect" neuspješno isprepliće Arethine osobne, političke i profesionalne životne uloge, pribjegavajući pristupu koji njezine značajne trenutke svodi na puka zaustavljanja u biografiji – kaže Grierson. Portretiranje Arethe Franklin, jedne od najvećih pjevačica prošlog stoljeća, zastrašujući je zadatak, ali iako Jennifer Hudson ima snažan glas, ona se ne može ni približiti utjelovljenju bogatstva i raspona Arethina stila.
Da budemo iskreni, možda niti jedan izvođač to ne bi mogao, ali glumicu ometa i scenarij koji na Arethu često gleda više kao na inspirativnu ličnost nego na višeslojnu osobu.
Taj impuls ističe njezine fascinantne neobičnosti i veliku ambiciju, lišavajući je, međutim, onoga što ju je učinilo tako uvjerljivom, kompliciranom umjetnicom, dodaje kritičar Screen Dailya.

– Film ne bježi od mračnih točaka, ali ih niti ne proširuje. Tako jedna scena nagovještava seksualno zlostavljanje u djetinjstvu, a kasnije se suptilno spominje, iako nikada nije u potpunosti razjašnjena – rekao je Brian Truitt.
Aretha Franklin rođena je 1942. u Memphisu, saveznoj američkoj državi Tennessee. Pjevanjem i sviranjem klavira bavila se od malih nogu, pjevajući gospel u baptističkoj crkvi gdje joj je otac bio pastor. Sa 18 godina počela je pjevati sekularnu glazbu za Columbia Records.

Njezina slava bila je zacementirana 1967. i 1968. godine kada je izdala niz hitova koji su postali klasici, a prva dva Grammyja dobila je za pjesmu "Respect", moćnu obradu originalnog hita Otisa Reddinga, po kojoj film i nosi ime.
Tijekom njezine karijere nije nedostajalo senzacionalističkih naslova, knjiga i biografija u kojima se pisalo o njezinom teškom karakteru, problemima s alkoholom i ljubomori prema ostalim izvođačicama, poput Barbare Streisand ili Tine Turner.
Ali, ništa od tih naslova ne može opovrgnuti njezin dugotrajni glazbeni uspjeh koji pokazuje da "kraljica soula" ni danas, nakon smrti, nije zaboravljena.
Aretha Franklin preminula je 16. kolovoza 2018. u 77. godini života, a na posljednje počivalište na groblju u Detroitu ispraćena je u zlatnom kovčegu, u crvenim štiklama i s lentom na kojoj je pisalo "Kraljica Soula".

Dama s 18 Grammyja
Aretha Franklin je 1972. godine izdala album "Amazing Grace" koji je postao najprodavaniji gospel album do tada. Njezina slava potrajala je tijekom sedamdesetih godina prošlog stoljeća sve do dolaska diskogroznice. Teško razdoblje opadanja popularnosti odrazilo se i u njezinom privatnom životu no uspjeh filma "Blues Brothers" 1980. godine u kojem je pjevala uz komičare Johna Belushija i Dana Aykroyda oživio je njezinu karijeru. Novi album, koji je postao njezin najprodavaniji, izdala je 1985. godine pod nazivom "Who's Zoomin' Who?" na kojemu je hit-pjesma "Freeway of Love" i suradnja s bendom Eurythmics.
Osvojila je svoju 18. Grammy nagradu 2008. godine za hit-pjesmu "Never Gonna Break my Faith" na kojem je surađivala s Mary J. Blige. Godinu dana kasnije pjevala je i na inauguraciji Baracka Obame koji je viđen kako briše suze tijekom njezine izvedbe. S 18 osvojenih Grammyja smatra se jednom od najnagrađivanijih pjevačica u povijesti.
