Queen of soul Aretha Franklin (1942. - 2018.) zasigurno bi bila oduševljena glumačkom i vokalnom interpretacijom oskarovke Jennifer Hudson. Na koncu, Franklin je osobno predložila Hudson da je utjelovi u biografskom filmu. No, tko zna bi li legendarnu pjevačicu jednako oduševio i taj film – "Respect" redateljice Liesl Tommy.

Naime, "Respect" je "biopic" većinski snimljen po žanrovskom "PS-u", glumačko-pjevački impresivan kad Hudson pusti glas, ali i narativno tipiziran, jedan od onih koji bi glavnoj glumici mogao donijeti nominaciju za Oscara ("Judy", "The United States vs. Billie Holiday") i ostati uskraćen u drugim važnijim kategorijama, unatoč tome što je oskarovski prestižan projekt.

Fanovi kraljice soula i biografskih drama rado će gledati i slušati "Respect" ove godine i u nadolazećim godinama, premda je mala šansa da će unutar kinematografije uživati status koji u glazbi uživa Aretha i biti proglašen definitivnim filmom o njoj kao što su, npr., za Jima Morrisona "definitivni" Stoneovi "The Doorsi".

Tajming za "Respect" je svakako na mjestu: biografije pjevač(ic)a u punom su zamahu posljednjih godina, od "Morrisey: Engleska pripada meni", preko "Bohemian Rhapsody" i "Rocketmana" do "Judy" i "Sjedinjene države protiv Billie Holliday". Judy Garland i Billie Holliday se, zanimljivo, spominju u "Respect". Tako, u jednoj sceni Franklin dobiva pohvalu da pjeva "kao crna Judy Garland", u drugoj da je "svetica u usporedbi s Billie Holliday".

Po dometima se "Respect" na koncu i smješta negdje između "Judy" i "The United States vs. Billie Holiday", bliži potonjemu. No, dok se "Sjedinjene države protiv Billie Holliday" ponajviše ticao ljudskih prava koja su ispisivale biografske crtice titularne pjevačke legende jazza, "Respect" je prije svega film o Arethi pa tek onda društveno angažirana drama o tome kako je bilo biti crnac i žena onda i ondje.

Na početku filma spominju se segregirani klubovi, Martin Luther King (Gilbert Glenn Brown) bio je prijatelj Arethina oca, baptističkog propovjednika Clarencea LaVaughna Franklina (oskarovac Forest Whitaker), a pjevačica je pjevala za "pokret", htjela u prosvjede, doprinosila pravima crnaca itd.

Kad je King ubijen, Aretha je otpjevala "Precious Lord, Take My Hand" na njegovu sprovodu. Međutim, sve su to usputni momenti u filmu koji nema namjeru u prvi plan staviti društveno-politički angažman i nasloniti se na recentna oskarovska ostvarenja "Juda i crni mesija", "Jedna noć u Miamiju" itd.

"Respect" se primarno bavi pjevačicom i njezinim životom, prateći je od malih nogu, kad je imala deset godina, ali po glasu zvučala "kao da ima 30" (tad je glumi dobra Skye Dakota Turner), do snimanja čuvene vjerske ploče "Amazing Grace" 1972. Dvadeset godina nečijeg života je puno vremena da ih film pokrije u 140 minuta, posebice ako je život bio turbulentan kao Arethin.

Zato "Respect" pristupa nekim trenucima kao natuknicama s "Wikipedije" i povremeno djeluje zbrzano, dramaturški paušalno, kao već viđeni montažni zbroj općih mjesta biografske drame. Pa ipak, uvodnih 20-ak minuta s malom Franklin važno je da se skiciraju njezina ljubav prema glazbi koja će joj "spasiti život" i traume iz djetinjstva (silovanje u dobi od 12 godina), sve što će je definirati kao glazbenicu s "demonima".

Upravo će glazbom Aretha istjerivati demone kad umjesto generičkih hitova, nedostojnih njezina raskošnog vokala i talenta, počne pjevati osobnije pjesme koje (je) diraju u ranjenu dušu i imaju sugestivne naslove, poput titularne "Respect" ili "Freedom", za muškarce što su pjevačicu voljeli kontrolirati, pa i psihofizički zlostavljati, od oca do prvog supruga i menadžera Teda Whitea (Marlon Wayans).

Stvaranje pjesme "Respect" predočava kreativni proces pisanja, aranžiranja i uštimavanja s bendom u jednoj od boljih scena te vrste u sličnim filmovima. A izvođenje "Freedom" je režijski najbolja sekvencija, s vještim poigravanjem auditivnim i vizualnim efektima, pojačavanjem glasa i utišavanjem glazbe.

Glas je bitan jer njime je Franklin izrazila sve što je tišti, razbila začarani životni krug, načinila da je se istinski čuje. "Nitko nije vlasnik tvog glasa osim Boga", rekli su Arethi koja ulazi u "Respect" pjevajući za goste velečasnog oca ("Žele da im pjevaš!"), a iz njega izlazi snimajući "Amazing Grace" u crkvi.

Kad u tom momentu redateljica napravi "rez" na izvedbu "prave" Franklin dok 2015. pjeva "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman" na "tribute" koncertu za Carole King, jasno je kako je Aretha jedna i jedina, ali i da je Hudson, duša filma, napravila dojmljivu interpretaciju njezina lika i djela, ne imitaciju. Hudson je kanalizirala dušu kraljice soula od neba do zemlje i natrag.

Mary J. Blige kao Dinah Washington

Aretha u filmu govoi da su joj najdraži izvođači (bili) Ella Fitzgerald i Sam Cooke. Zanimljivo je i da se popularna pjevačica Mary J. Blige pojavljuje u maloj, ali zapaženoj ulozi kao Dinah Washington.

Queen of soul Aretha Franklin (1942. - 2018.) zasigurno bi bila oduševljena glumačkom i vokalnom interpretacijom oskarovke Jennifer Hudson. Na koncu, Franklin je osobno predložila Hudson da je utjelovi u biografskom filmu. No, tko zna bi li legendarnu pjevačicu jednako oduševio i taj film – "Respect" redateljice Liesl Tommy.

Naime, "Respect" je "biopic" većinski snimljen po žanrovskom "PS-u", glumačko-pjevački impresivan kad Hudson pusti glas, ali i narativno tipiziran, jedan od onih koji bi glavnoj glumici mogao donijeti nominaciju za Oscara ("Judy", "The United States vs. Billie Holiday") i ostati uskraćen u drugim važnijim kategorijama, unatoč tome što je oskarovski prestižan projekt.

Fanovi kraljice soula i biografskih drama rado će gledati i slušati "Respect" ove godine i u nadolazećim godinama, premda je mala šansa da će unutar kinematografije uživati status koji u glazbi uživa Aretha i biti proglašen definitivnim filmom o njoj kao što su, npr., za Jima Morrisona "definitivni" Stoneovi "The Doorsi".

Tajming za "Respect" je svakako na mjestu: biografije pjevač(ic)a u punom su zamahu posljednjih godina, od "Morrisey: Engleska pripada meni", preko "Bohemian Rhapsody" i "Rocketmana" do "Judy" i "Sjedinjene države protiv Billie Holliday". Judy Garland i Billie Holliday se, zanimljivo, spominju u "Respect". Tako, u jednoj sceni Franklin dobiva pohvalu da pjeva "kao crna Judy Garland", u drugoj da je "svetica u usporedbi s Billie Holliday".

Po dometima se "Respect" na koncu i smješta negdje između "Judy" i "The United States vs. Billie Holiday", bliži potonjemu. No, dok se "Sjedinjene države protiv Billie Holliday" ponajviše ticao ljudskih prava koja su ispisivale biografske crtice titularne pjevačke legende jazza, "Respect" je prije svega film o Arethi pa tek onda društveno angažirana drama o tome kako je bilo biti crnac i žena onda i ondje.

Na početku filma spominju se segregirani klubovi, Martin Luther King (Gilbert Glenn Brown) bio je prijatelj Arethina oca, baptističkog propovjednika Clarencea LaVaughna Franklina (oskarovac Forest Whitaker), a pjevačica je pjevala za "pokret", htjela u prosvjede, doprinosila pravima crnaca itd.

Kad je King ubijen, Aretha je otpjevala "Precious Lord, Take My Hand" na njegovu sprovodu. Međutim, sve su to usputni momenti u filmu koji nema namjeru u prvi plan staviti društveno-politički angažman i nasloniti se na recentna oskarovska ostvarenja "Juda i crni mesija", "Jedna noć u Miamiju" itd.

"Respect" se primarno bavi pjevačicom i njezinim životom, prateći je od malih nogu, kad je imala deset godina, ali po glasu zvučala "kao da ima 30" (tad je glumi dobra Skye Dakota Turner), do snimanja čuvene vjerske ploče "Amazing Grace" 1972. Dvadeset godina nečijeg života je puno vremena da ih film pokrije u 140 minuta, posebice ako je život bio turbulentan kao Arethin.

Zato "Respect" pristupa nekim trenucima kao natuknicama s "Wikipedije" i povremeno djeluje zbrzano, dramaturški paušalno, kao već viđeni montažni zbroj općih mjesta biografske drame. Pa ipak, uvodnih 20-ak minuta s malom Franklin važno je da se skiciraju njezina ljubav prema glazbi koja će joj "spasiti život" i traume iz djetinjstva (silovanje u dobi od 12 godina), sve što će je definirati kao glazbenicu s "demonima".

Upravo će glazbom Aretha istjerivati demone kad umjesto generičkih hitova, nedostojnih njezina raskošnog vokala i talenta, počne pjevati osobnije pjesme koje (je) diraju u ranjenu dušu i imaju sugestivne naslove, poput titularne "Respect" ili "Freedom", za muškarce što su pjevačicu voljeli kontrolirati, pa i psihofizički zlostavljati, od oca do prvog supruga i menadžera Teda Whitea (Marlon Wayans).

Stvaranje pjesme "Respect" predočava kreativni proces pisanja, aranžiranja i uštimavanja s bendom u jednoj od boljih scena te vrste u sličnim filmovima. A izvođenje "Freedom" je režijski najbolja sekvencija, s vještim poigravanjem auditivnim i vizualnim efektima, pojačavanjem glasa i utišavanjem glazbe.

Glas je bitan jer njime je Franklin izrazila sve što je tišti, razbila začarani životni krug, načinila da je se istinski čuje. "Nitko nije vlasnik tvog glasa osim Boga", rekli su Arethi koja ulazi u "Respect" pjevajući za goste velečasnog oca ("Žele da im pjevaš!"), a iz njega izlazi snimajući "Amazing Grace" u crkvi.

Kad u tom momentu redateljica napravi "rez" na izvedbu "prave" Franklin dok 2015. pjeva "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman" na "tribute" koncertu za Carole King, jasno je kako je Aretha jedna i jedina, ali i da je Hudson, duša filma, napravila dojmljivu interpretaciju njezina lika i djela, ne imitaciju. Hudson je kanalizirala dušu kraljice soula od neba do zemlje i natrag.

Mary J. Blige kao Dinah Washington

Aretha u filmu govoi da su joj najdraži izvođači (bili) Ella Fitzgerald i Sam Cooke. Zanimljivo je i da se popularna pjevačica Mary J. Blige pojavljuje u maloj, ali zapaženoj ulozi kao Dinah Washington.
