Recenzirajući 2018. dokumentarni film o Whitney Houston (1963. – 2012.), nazvan "Whitney", potpisnik ovih redaka je zapisao slijedeće... "Možda se jednog dana snimi igrani film o Whitney koju će, potencijalno, igrati neka mlada afroamerička glumica u usponu. Taj film će biti megahit. Za ‘Whitney‘ je to upitno, neovisno o kvaliteti ovog dokumentarca.

Naime, masovna publika želi filmske emocije i ne preferira izaći iz kina utučena, pa makar se suočila s (izvjesnom) smrti omiljenog lika. A ‘Whitney‘ se, za razliku od ‘Zvijezda je rođena‘ i ‘Bohemian Rhapsody‘, ne libi zakoračiti u unutarnju tamu pjevačice i, realno, baš i ne nudi nekakvu utjehu, ni za gledatelja ni za Houston."

Četiri godine kasnije, igrani film o Whitney se snimio. Naslovljen je "Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance With Somebody", ili po našem "I Wanna Dance With Somebody: Film o Whitney Houston". Pjevačicu igra afroamerička glumica u usponu, solidna Naomi Ackie.

A hoće li film biti megahit? Za to ima potencijala nemjerljivo više od dokumentarca koji na kraju nije zabilježio hitoidnu prođu. No, problem je što "Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance With Somebody" kreće u kinodistribuciju netom nakon "Avatara 2", stoga je upitno da može dosegnuti uspjeh "Bohemian Rhapsody" koji nije imao konkurenciju ovakvog kalibra.

Ipak, "I Wanna Dance With Somebody" je biografska drama komercijalne naravi, stvorena za masovnu publiku kojoj je stremila i sama Whitney, kako kaže u filmu. Predbožićni datum kinopremijere je, utoliko, poprilično pogođen, posebice što se "I Wanna Dance With Somebody" najavljuje kao "radosna, emotivna i srceparajuća proslava života i glazbe jedne od najvećih R&B pop-pjevačica svih vremena". "Ovog Božića proslavite neispričanu priču jedne ikone", istaknuto je na stranom plakatu filma.

Najave su tu da pripreme publiku kako neće gledati mračni, papreni dokumentarac o pjevačici kao što je bio spomenuti "Whitney" i "Whitney: Biti svoja", već ponešto "zašećerenu" verziju njezina života. Takvu najavu nije imao "Bohemian Rhapsody" pa su se neki razočarali što je filmska biografija Freddieja Mercuryja bila "umivena".

Sada u slučaju Houston publika unaprijed otprilike zna na čemu je. Zanimljivo, Whitneyina (bi)seksualnost je prikazana malo otvorenije u odnosu na Freddiejevu i film ne skriva lezbijsku vezu s Robyn Crawford (Nafessa Williams) koja je zaprijetila njezinu uspjehu u konzervativnoj Americi osamdesetih.

Titularna pjesma "I Wanna Dance With Somebody", prvi "broj jedan" megahit pjevačice, posvećena je Robyn između redaka, odnosno Houston se prepoznala u stihovima o tome da "silno želite plesati s nekim, a ne možete" jer "svaka pjesma je priča" i "vrhunsko pjevanje dolazi iz tri mjesta (glava, srce, stomak)".

Mračna, problematična strana glazbene zvijezde (teška ovisnost o drogi, odlasci na rehabilitaciju, burna veza i brak s "bad boy" kurvišom Bobbyjem Brownom), nije u prvom planu filma. Štoviše, nalazi se na rubu kadra ili čak izvan njega, za razliku od nekih ključnih trenutaka u njezinoj karijeri (pjevanje američke himne na Super Bowlu, snimanje "Tjelohranitelja" s Kevinom Costnerom, koncert za Nelsona Mandelu...).

Kad se jednog jutra Bobby (Ashton Sanders) vrati doma nakon cjelonoćnog provoda i postane agresivan tijekom rječkanja s Whitney koja ga želi izbaciti iz kuće, ona spomene da će "opet zvati policiju". Dakle, sličnih situacija je bilo, ali film ih dotad nije prikazao, niti je u ovoj otišao do kraja da svađa supružnika eskalira kao što je eskalirala u stvarnom životu. Droga se u filmu mahom spominje i pojavljuje u natruhama kad je pjevačici dojadilo biti "dobra djevojčica" i "američka dragana".

Direktor diskografske etikete Arista Records Clive Davis (Stanley Tucci) govori Whitney da "podcjenjuje ubojitu moć droge", na što ona doda "Da bi pjevao s bogovima, ponekad trebaš ljestve". Davis podsjeća Houston da je znala pjevati s bogovima i bez ljestava. I jest. Pjevanje, tj. njezin glas forte su filma.

Moćni glas pjevačice čujemo u uvodnoj špici prije nego se pojavi slika pozornice dodjela Američkih glazbenih nagrada 1994., kad je Whitney pjevala "mješavinu pjesama o ljubavi", što sugerira namjere redateljice Kasi Lemmons ("Harriet"). Na prvom mjestu filma je Houston kao pjevačica, "najveći glas njezine generacije", što je i bila.

"Samo ću pjevati", izjavljuje Whitney na početku karijere, ne znajući da pjevanje, bivanje pjevačkom zvijezdom, "pop princezom", dolazi s velikim bremenom, uključujući i optužbe da joj "glazba nije dovoljno crna" (zvali su je "oreo"). "Glazba nema boju. Ne znam pjevati crno i bijelo, ali znam pjevati", rekla je Whitney koju Ackie glumi podsjećajući na Angelu Bassett u ulozi Tine Turner.

Svaki put kad Whitney zapjeva i pusti glas koji obara s nogu, pjevajući "velike, vokalno ambiciozne pjesme" poput "The Greatest Love Of All", "I Will Always Love You" i "I Have Nothing", film se uzdiže visoko iznad prosjeka, onoliko koliko je Houston bila iznadprosječna, pače vanserijska pjevačica.

Inače je negdje u dometu "biopica" o njezinoj kumi Arethi Franklin "Respect", tj. nedostaje mu režijske energije i iskričavosti da bude posebnija filmska biografija kao "Rocketman", "Elvis" ili "Moonage Daydream". Najuputniji za usporedbu je "Bohemian Rhapsody" s kojim "I Wanna Dance With Somebody" dijeli scenarista Anthonyja McCartena ("Teorija svega") i dirljivu završnicu. Fiktivni nastup Whitney na dodjeli nagrada Grammy 2012. intimnija je "Wembley scena" ovog filma.

Godine 2015. snimljen je TV film "Whitney" u debitantskoj režiji Angele Bassett, a pjevačicu je glumila Yaya DaCosta.

Recenzirajući 2018. dokumentarni film o Whitney Houston (1963. – 2012.), nazvan "Whitney", potpisnik ovih redaka je zapisao slijedeće... "Možda se jednog dana snimi igrani film o Whitney koju će, potencijalno, igrati neka mlada afroamerička glumica u usponu. Taj film će biti megahit. Za ‘Whitney‘ je to upitno, neovisno o kvaliteti ovog dokumentarca.

Naime, masovna publika želi filmske emocije i ne preferira izaći iz kina utučena, pa makar se suočila s (izvjesnom) smrti omiljenog lika. A ‘Whitney‘ se, za razliku od ‘Zvijezda je rođena‘ i ‘Bohemian Rhapsody‘, ne libi zakoračiti u unutarnju tamu pjevačice i, realno, baš i ne nudi nekakvu utjehu, ni za gledatelja ni za Houston."

Četiri godine kasnije, igrani film o Whitney se snimio. Naslovljen je "Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance With Somebody", ili po našem "I Wanna Dance With Somebody: Film o Whitney Houston". Pjevačicu igra afroamerička glumica u usponu, solidna Naomi Ackie.

A hoće li film biti megahit? Za to ima potencijala nemjerljivo više od dokumentarca koji na kraju nije zabilježio hitoidnu prođu. No, problem je što "Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance With Somebody" kreće u kinodistribuciju netom nakon "Avatara 2", stoga je upitno da može dosegnuti uspjeh "Bohemian Rhapsody" koji nije imao konkurenciju ovakvog kalibra.

Ipak, "I Wanna Dance With Somebody" je biografska drama komercijalne naravi, stvorena za masovnu publiku kojoj je stremila i sama Whitney, kako kaže u filmu. Predbožićni datum kinopremijere je, utoliko, poprilično pogođen, posebice što se "I Wanna Dance With Somebody" najavljuje kao "radosna, emotivna i srceparajuća proslava života i glazbe jedne od najvećih R&B pop-pjevačica svih vremena". "Ovog Božića proslavite neispričanu priču jedne ikone", istaknuto je na stranom plakatu filma.

Najave su tu da pripreme publiku kako neće gledati mračni, papreni dokumentarac o pjevačici kao što je bio spomenuti "Whitney" i "Whitney: Biti svoja", već ponešto "zašećerenu" verziju njezina života. Takvu najavu nije imao "Bohemian Rhapsody" pa su se neki razočarali što je filmska biografija Freddieja Mercuryja bila "umivena".

Sada u slučaju Houston publika unaprijed otprilike zna na čemu je. Zanimljivo, Whitneyina (bi)seksualnost je prikazana malo otvorenije u odnosu na Freddiejevu i film ne skriva lezbijsku vezu s Robyn Crawford (Nafessa Williams) koja je zaprijetila njezinu uspjehu u konzervativnoj Americi osamdesetih.

Titularna pjesma "I Wanna Dance With Somebody", prvi "broj jedan" megahit pjevačice, posvećena je Robyn između redaka, odnosno Houston se prepoznala u stihovima o tome da "silno želite plesati s nekim, a ne možete" jer "svaka pjesma je priča" i "vrhunsko pjevanje dolazi iz tri mjesta (glava, srce, stomak)".

Mračna, problematična strana glazbene zvijezde (teška ovisnost o drogi, odlasci na rehabilitaciju, burna veza i brak s "bad boy" kurvišom Bobbyjem Brownom), nije u prvom planu filma. Štoviše, nalazi se na rubu kadra ili čak izvan njega, za razliku od nekih ključnih trenutaka u njezinoj karijeri (pjevanje američke himne na Super Bowlu, snimanje "Tjelohranitelja" s Kevinom Costnerom, koncert za Nelsona Mandelu...).

Kad se jednog jutra Bobby (Ashton Sanders) vrati doma nakon cjelonoćnog provoda i postane agresivan tijekom rječkanja s Whitney koja ga želi izbaciti iz kuće, ona spomene da će "opet zvati policiju". Dakle, sličnih situacija je bilo, ali film ih dotad nije prikazao, niti je u ovoj otišao do kraja da svađa supružnika eskalira kao što je eskalirala u stvarnom životu. Droga se u filmu mahom spominje i pojavljuje u natruhama kad je pjevačici dojadilo biti "dobra djevojčica" i "američka dragana".

Direktor diskografske etikete Arista Records Clive Davis (Stanley Tucci) govori Whitney da "podcjenjuje ubojitu moć droge", na što ona doda "Da bi pjevao s bogovima, ponekad trebaš ljestve". Davis podsjeća Houston da je znala pjevati s bogovima i bez ljestava. I jest. Pjevanje, tj. njezin glas forte su filma.

Moćni glas pjevačice čujemo u uvodnoj špici prije nego se pojavi slika pozornice dodjela Američkih glazbenih nagrada 1994., kad je Whitney pjevala "mješavinu pjesama o ljubavi", što sugerira namjere redateljice Kasi Lemmons ("Harriet"). Na prvom mjestu filma je Houston kao pjevačica, "najveći glas njezine generacije", što je i bila.

"Samo ću pjevati", izjavljuje Whitney na početku karijere, ne znajući da pjevanje, bivanje pjevačkom zvijezdom, "pop princezom", dolazi s velikim bremenom, uključujući i optužbe da joj "glazba nije dovoljno crna" (zvali su je "oreo"). "Glazba nema boju. Ne znam pjevati crno i bijelo, ali znam pjevati", rekla je Whitney koju Ackie glumi podsjećajući na Angelu Bassett u ulozi Tine Turner.

Svaki put kad Whitney zapjeva i pusti glas koji obara s nogu, pjevajući "velike, vokalno ambiciozne pjesme" poput "The Greatest Love Of All", "I Will Always Love You" i "I Have Nothing", film se uzdiže visoko iznad prosjeka, onoliko koliko je Houston bila iznadprosječna, pače vanserijska pjevačica.

Inače je negdje u dometu "biopica" o njezinoj kumi Arethi Franklin "Respect", tj. nedostaje mu režijske energije i iskričavosti da bude posebnija filmska biografija kao "Rocketman", "Elvis" ili "Moonage Daydream". Najuputniji za usporedbu je "Bohemian Rhapsody" s kojim "I Wanna Dance With Somebody" dijeli scenarista Anthonyja McCartena ("Teorija svega") i dirljivu završnicu. Fiktivni nastup Whitney na dodjeli nagrada Grammy 2012. intimnija je "Wembley scena" ovog filma.

Godine 2015. snimljen je TV film "Whitney" u debitantskoj režiji Angele Bassett, a pjevačicu je glumila Yaya DaCosta.
