Stotinu godina nakon smrtonosne španjolske gripe, koja je odnijela između 50 i 100 milijuna života diljem svijeta, znanstvenici upozoravaju da bi se pandemija mogla ponoviti, ističući da je teško predvidjeti kada ili gdje će se to dogoditi. Također savjetuju da je najbolja mjera zaštite cijepljenje protiv gripe, kazali su za britanski BBC.
Svake godine tijekom sezone gripe umre 250.000 do 500.000 ljudi, s time da se svake godine pojavljuje drugi soj gripe. S obzirom na sposobnost mutiranja virusa i njegove prisutnosti u prirodi, stručnjaci se slažu da je samo pitanje vremena kada će se pojaviti soj koji će biti jednako smrtonosan kao španjolska gripa.
- Pandemije gripe su poput potresa, uragana i tsunamija, događaju se, s time da su neke gore od drugih - rekao je Michael Osterholm, direktor Istraživačkog centra za infektivne bolesti na Sveučilištu Minnesota. Dodao je da je teško točno predvidjeti kada će početi ili kako će se pandemija razvijati.
Kolaps društva
Iako Svjetska znanstvena organizacija (WHO) redovito prati pojavu virusa i njegov razvoj, teško je kontrolirati i pregledati svaku životinju koja bi mogla biti prijenosnik virusa, izjavio je dr. Robert Webster iz Dječje bolnice u Memphisu, SAD.
Virus bi, naravno, mogao postati visoko zarazan, a zatim se brzo proširiti diljem svijeta, vjerojatno u roku od nekoliko tjedana, kaže prof. Gerardo Chowell, profesor epidemiologije na američkom državnom sveučilištu Georgia.
- Gripa je jedan od onih virusa koji se, kada jednom uđu u osjetljivu populaciju, vrlo brzo širi - dodao je.Zbog velikog broja stanovnika na svijetu imali bismo veći broj bolesnih i mrtvih nego prije sto godina. Ako je tada od gripe umrlo 50 milijuna ljudi, sada bi ih umrlo više od 200 milijuna - objasnio je.
Broj smrtnih slučajeva ne bi bio ravnomjerno raspoređen po cijelom svijetu. Gora situacija bi bila među etničkim skupinama koje su osjetljivije na virus, među siromašnima i onima koji nemaju pristup osnovnoj zdravstvenoj skrbi.
Upozorili su i na države sa skupim zdravstvenim uslugama, kao što su Sjedinjene Države.
Cjepiva su najbolja mjera za zaustavljanje pandemije, ocijenila je epidemiologinja Lone Simonsen s danskog sveučilišta Roskilde. Po mišljenju drugih stručnjaka, treba biti svjestan da su današnja cjepiva 60 posto uspješna.
Sličan je problem s lijekovima, jer se zapravo nigdje ne akumuliraju lijekovi protiv gripe za slučaj pandemije. Ako bi se pojavila pandemija, stručnjaci procjenjuju da bi to značilo i kolaps društva, jer bi se škole i poslovni subjekti zatvorili, javni promet ne bi funkcionirao, moglo bi doći do prekida opskrbe strujom i gomilala bi se tijela mrtvih. Uskoro bi se pojavili i problemi s pristupom hrani.

Stotinu godina nakon smrtonosne španjolske gripe, koja je odnijela između 50 i 100 milijuna života diljem svijeta, znanstvenici upozoravaju da bi se pandemija mogla ponoviti, ističući da je teško predvidjeti kada ili gdje će se to dogoditi. Također savjetuju da je najbolja mjera zaštite cijepljenje protiv gripe, kazali su za britanski BBC.
Svake godine tijekom sezone gripe umre 250.000 do 500.000 ljudi, s time da se svake godine pojavljuje drugi soj gripe. S obzirom na sposobnost mutiranja virusa i njegove prisutnosti u prirodi, stručnjaci se slažu da je samo pitanje vremena kada će se pojaviti soj koji će biti jednako smrtonosan kao španjolska gripa.
- Pandemije gripe su poput potresa, uragana i tsunamija, događaju se, s time da su neke gore od drugih - rekao je Michael Osterholm, direktor Istraživačkog centra za infektivne bolesti na Sveučilištu Minnesota. Dodao je da je teško točno predvidjeti kada će početi ili kako će se pandemija razvijati.
Kolaps društva
Iako Svjetska znanstvena organizacija (WHO) redovito prati pojavu virusa i njegov razvoj, teško je kontrolirati i pregledati svaku životinju koja bi mogla biti prijenosnik virusa, izjavio je dr. Robert Webster iz Dječje bolnice u Memphisu, SAD.
Virus bi, naravno, mogao postati visoko zarazan, a zatim se brzo proširiti diljem svijeta, vjerojatno u roku od nekoliko tjedana, kaže prof. Gerardo Chowell, profesor epidemiologije na američkom državnom sveučilištu Georgia.
- Gripa je jedan od onih virusa koji se, kada jednom uđu u osjetljivu populaciju, vrlo brzo širi - dodao je.Zbog velikog broja stanovnika na svijetu imali bismo veći broj bolesnih i mrtvih nego prije sto godina. Ako je tada od gripe umrlo 50 milijuna ljudi, sada bi ih umrlo više od 200 milijuna - objasnio je.
Broj smrtnih slučajeva ne bi bio ravnomjerno raspoređen po cijelom svijetu. Gora situacija bi bila među etničkim skupinama koje su osjetljivije na virus, među siromašnima i onima koji nemaju pristup osnovnoj zdravstvenoj skrbi.
Upozorili su i na države sa skupim zdravstvenim uslugama, kao što su Sjedinjene Države.
Cjepiva su najbolja mjera za zaustavljanje pandemije, ocijenila je epidemiologinja Lone Simonsen s danskog sveučilišta Roskilde. Po mišljenju drugih stručnjaka, treba biti svjestan da su današnja cjepiva 60 posto uspješna.
Sličan je problem s lijekovima, jer se zapravo nigdje ne akumuliraju lijekovi protiv gripe za slučaj pandemije. Ako bi se pojavila pandemija, stručnjaci procjenjuju da bi to značilo i kolaps društva, jer bi se škole i poslovni subjekti zatvorili, javni promet ne bi funkcionirao, moglo bi doći do prekida opskrbe strujom i gomilala bi se tijela mrtvih. Uskoro bi se pojavili i problemi s pristupom hrani.
