Etiopljani u ponedjeljak u sjeni sukoba u regiji Tigraju izlaze na parlamentarne i regionalne izbore koje je premijer proglasio dokazom svoje privrženosti demokraciji nakon desetljeća represivne vladavine u drugoj afričkoj najmnogoljudnijoj naciji.

Premijer Abiy Ahmed (44), proveo je opsežne političke i ekonomske reforme nakon što ga je na tu poziciju dovela vladajuća koalicija 2018. godine. No neki aktivisti za ljudska prava kažu da taj zamah gubi na snazi te govore o ratnim zločinima u Tigraju, što vlada niječe.

Abiy je prošli tjedan rekao da će današnji izlazak na birališta biti "prvi pokušaj slobodnih i pravednih izbora" u Etiopiji, čija je nekoć brzorastuća ekonomija pogođena sukobima i pandemijom covida-19.

Rezultati glasanja mogli bi odjeknuti dalje od Etiopije. Nacija Afričkog roga diplomatski je 'teškaš' u nestabilnoj regiji, s mirovnom ulogom u Somaliji, Sudanu i Južnom Sudanu. Radi se također o jednom od najvećih svjetskih tržišta u razvoju.

Abiyeva novoosnovana Stranka napretka favorit je među puno kandidata.

Bivši politički zatvorenik Berhanu Nega jedini je istaknutiji kandidat koji se ne natječe na temelju etničke pripadnosti. 

No njegova stranka Etiopski građani za društvenu pravdu nisu uspjeli privući podršku izvan gradova.

Na prošlim izborima, vladajuća koalicija i njezini saveznici osvojili su svih 547 mjesta. Ovaj put, više od 37 milijuna od ukupno 109 milijuna Etiopljana prijavilo se za glasanje, te trebaju izabrati između 46 stranaka za parlament.

Izborno povjerenstvo tvrdi da se ove godine natječe više kandidata nego na ijednim prethodnim izborima.

Još nije određen datum glasanja u Tigraju, gdje se vlada od studenog bori s bivšom vladajućom strankom u regiji, Narodnooslobodilačkim frontom Tigraja. Ujedinjeni narodi su rekli da je oko 350 tisuća ljudi pogođeno glađu u toj regiji.

Među Aniyeve reforme spada ukidanje zabrane djelovanja desecima političkih stranaka i medijskih kuća, oslobađanje desetaka tisuća političkih zatvorenika i ublažavanje zabrane političkih okupljanja.

No Fisseha Tekle iz Amnesty Internationala kaže da vlada i dalje guši svoje protivnike, koristeći izmijenjen antiteroristički zakon i novi zakon o govoru mržnje zbog kojeg se može završiti u zatvoru zbog online sadržaja.

"Vlada koristi ove zakone kako bi uhitila ljude i držala ih dugo u zatvoru", rekao je Fisseha. 

Abiy je obećao u zemlju dovesti strane investicije i ubrzati uvođenje električne energije gradnjom divovske hidroelektrane u vrijednosti 4 milijarde dolara na Plavom Nilu, zbog čega je došlo do napetosti s Egiptom i Sudanom, koji strahuju da će zalihe vode iz Nila na koje se oslanjaju biti obustavljene.

No godišnja inflacija trenutno iznosi oko 20 posto, a predviđanja ovogodišnjeg rasta 2 posto, nakon što su prije pandemije iznosila 10 posto.

"Troškovi života rastu", kaže trgovac Murad Merga, čiji je prozor oblijepljen plakatima vladajuće stranke. No ostaje pozitivan: "Sve će se popraviti korak po korak."

Etiopljani u ponedjeljak u sjeni sukoba u regiji Tigraju izlaze na parlamentarne i regionalne izbore koje je premijer proglasio dokazom svoje privrženosti demokraciji nakon desetljeća represivne vladavine u drugoj afričkoj najmnogoljudnijoj naciji.

Premijer Abiy Ahmed (44), proveo je opsežne političke i ekonomske reforme nakon što ga je na tu poziciju dovela vladajuća koalicija 2018. godine. No neki aktivisti za ljudska prava kažu da taj zamah gubi na snazi te govore o ratnim zločinima u Tigraju, što vlada niječe.

Abiy je prošli tjedan rekao da će današnji izlazak na birališta biti "prvi pokušaj slobodnih i pravednih izbora" u Etiopiji, čija je nekoć brzorastuća ekonomija pogođena sukobima i pandemijom covida-19.

Rezultati glasanja mogli bi odjeknuti dalje od Etiopije. Nacija Afričkog roga diplomatski je 'teškaš' u nestabilnoj regiji, s mirovnom ulogom u Somaliji, Sudanu i Južnom Sudanu. Radi se također o jednom od najvećih svjetskih tržišta u razvoju.

Abiyeva novoosnovana Stranka napretka favorit je među puno kandidata.

Bivši politički zatvorenik Berhanu Nega jedini je istaknutiji kandidat koji se ne natječe na temelju etničke pripadnosti. 

No njegova stranka Etiopski građani za društvenu pravdu nisu uspjeli privući podršku izvan gradova.

Na prošlim izborima, vladajuća koalicija i njezini saveznici osvojili su svih 547 mjesta. Ovaj put, više od 37 milijuna od ukupno 109 milijuna Etiopljana prijavilo se za glasanje, te trebaju izabrati između 46 stranaka za parlament.

Izborno povjerenstvo tvrdi da se ove godine natječe više kandidata nego na ijednim prethodnim izborima.

Još nije određen datum glasanja u Tigraju, gdje se vlada od studenog bori s bivšom vladajućom strankom u regiji, Narodnooslobodilačkim frontom Tigraja. Ujedinjeni narodi su rekli da je oko 350 tisuća ljudi pogođeno glađu u toj regiji.

Među Aniyeve reforme spada ukidanje zabrane djelovanja desecima političkih stranaka i medijskih kuća, oslobađanje desetaka tisuća političkih zatvorenika i ublažavanje zabrane političkih okupljanja.

No Fisseha Tekle iz Amnesty Internationala kaže da vlada i dalje guši svoje protivnike, koristeći izmijenjen antiteroristički zakon i novi zakon o govoru mržnje zbog kojeg se može završiti u zatvoru zbog online sadržaja.

"Vlada koristi ove zakone kako bi uhitila ljude i držala ih dugo u zatvoru", rekao je Fisseha. 

Abiy je obećao u zemlju dovesti strane investicije i ubrzati uvođenje električne energije gradnjom divovske hidroelektrane u vrijednosti 4 milijarde dolara na Plavom Nilu, zbog čega je došlo do napetosti s Egiptom i Sudanom, koji strahuju da će zalihe vode iz Nila na koje se oslanjaju biti obustavljene.

No godišnja inflacija trenutno iznosi oko 20 posto, a predviđanja ovogodišnjeg rasta 2 posto, nakon što su prije pandemije iznosila 10 posto.

"Troškovi života rastu", kaže trgovac Murad Merga, čiji je prozor oblijepljen plakatima vladajuće stranke. No ostaje pozitivan: "Sve će se popraviti korak po korak."

U sjeni krvavih sukoba u Tigraju, u Etiopiji se održavaju parlamentarni izbori

Etiopljani u ponedjeljak u sjeni sukoba u regiji Tigraju izlaze na parlamentarne i regionalne izbore koje je premijer proglasio dokazom svoje privrženosti demokraciji nakon desetljeća represivne vladavine u drugoj afričkoj najmnogoljudnijoj naciji.

Premijer Abiy Ahmed (44), proveo je opsežne političke i ekonomske reforme nakon što ga je na tu poziciju dovela vladajuća koalicija 2018. godine. No neki aktivisti za ljudska prava kažu da taj zamah gubi na snazi te govore o ratnim zločinima u Tigraju, što vlada niječe.

Abiy je prošli tjedan rekao da će današnji izlazak na birališta biti "prvi pokušaj slobodnih i pravednih izbora" u Etiopiji, čija je nekoć brzorastuća ekonomija pogođena sukobima i pandemijom covida-19.

Rezultati glasanja mogli bi odjeknuti dalje od Etio...
