Neke od najvećih svjetskih tvrtki ne uspijevaju ispuniti tvrdnje da će postići ciljeve s neto nultom emisijom, prema istraživanju koje sugerira da će smanjiti svoje emisije ugljika za samo 40 posto, umjesto za obećanih 100 posto. Korporacije kao što su Amazon, Ikea, Nestlé i Unilever su među tvrtkama za koje se navodi da ne pokazuju mnogo realnih naznaka da će postići najavljeno drastično smanjenje emisija.

Thomas Day iz NewClimate Institutea, koji je sastavio izvješće, rekao je da će napori 25 proučavanih tvrtki, ukupno gledano, imati mali utjecaj. “Nije jasno da nas ova smanjenja vode dalje od uobičajenog poslovanja”, rekao je. “Bili smo jako razočarani i iznenađeni koliko prostora za poboljšanje ima među tvrtkama koje su proučavane. Mnogi se oslanjaju na kompenzaciju ugljika za veliki dio svojih predviđenih rezova. Corporate Climate Responsibility Monitor, NewClimate Institute i Carbon Market Watch, ocjenjivao je tvrtke prema kriterijima, uključujući njihove ciljeve, koliko kompenzacija planiraju koristiti i njihovu pouzdanost, ali i napredak u smanjenju vlastitih emisija i koliko su transparentni bili u svom postavljanju ciljeva i korporativnom izvješćivanju. Niti jedno od 25 ocijenjenih tvrtki nije ocijenjeno da postiže visok standard prema ovim mjerilima. Među onima koji su pokazali “nizak integritet” bili su Amazon i Ikea, dok su 11 tvrtki koje su bile najgore rangirane u studiji, pokazujući “vrlo nizak integritet”, uključivale E.ON i Nestlé.

Pretjerana upotreba kompenzacije bila je jedan od glavnih razloga zbog kojih je ocjena većine tvrtki smanjena, rekao je Day. "Ako inzistiraju na kompenzaciji, barem bi to trebalo biti s kreditima za ugljik koji imaju više integriteta", rekao je.

Glasnogovornik Amazona poručio je da tvrtka ima cilj postići nultu neto emisiju ugljika do 2040.: “Postavili smo ove ambiciozne ciljeve jer znamo da su klimatske promjene ozbiljan problem i da je potrebno poduzeti više nego ikada. Amazon je na putu da do 2025. napaja naše poslovanje 100-postotnom obnovljivom energijom, pet godina ispred našeg prvobitnog cilja.”

Glasnogovornik Ikee je rekao: “Iako je Ikea već postigla mnogo, kao što je prekidanje veze između smanjenja naših apsolutnih emisija uz povećanje poslovnog rasta, imamo planove za rješavanje preostalih složenih izazova, kao što je klimatski otisak korištenih materijala u asortimanu Ikee.”

Benjamin Ware, globalni voditelj klimatske isporuke i održivog izvora u Nestléu, rekao je: “Pozdravljamo preispitivanje naših akcija i obveza u vezi s klimatskim promjenama. Neke od najvećih svjetskih tvrtki ne uspijevaju ispuniti tvrdnje da će postići ciljeve s neto nultom emisijom, prema istraživanju koje sugerira da će smanjiti svoje emisije ugljika za samo 40 posto, umjesto za obećanih 100 posto. Korporacije kao što su Amazon, Ikea, Nestlé i Unilever su među tvrtkama za koje se navodi da ne pokazuju mnogo realnih naznaka da će postići najavljeno drastično smanjenje emisija.

Thomas Day iz NewClimate Institutea, koji je sastavio izvješće, rekao je da će napori 25 proučavanih tvrtki, ukupno gledano, imati mali utjecaj. “Nije jasno da nas ova smanjenja vode dalje od uobičajenog poslovanja”, rekao je. “Bili smo jako razočarani i iznenađeni koliko prostora za poboljšanje ima među tvrtkama koje su proučavane. One moraju biti mnogo transparentnije u vezi s tim ciljevima.”

Posebno su zabrinjavajući kratkoročni ciljevi, dodao je. Izvješće je pokazalo da bi ispitane tvrtke do 2030. godine u prosjeku smanjile svoje emisije samo za oko 23 posto, što je daleko ispod brojke od gotovo prepolovljenja u sljedećem desetljeću za koju znanstvenici kažu da je potrebna za ograničavanje globalnog zagrijavanja na 1,5C. "U klimatskoj krizi najvažnija je kratkoročna akcija", rekao je.

Mnogi se oslanjaju na kompenzaciju ugljika za veliki dio svojih predviđenih rezova. Nadoknada ugljika je kontroverzna praksa plaćanja za projekte koji smanjuju ugljični dioksid – obično održavanjem šuma ili uzgojem novih stabala – kako bi se nadoknadili staklenički plinovi koji se ispuštaju negdje drugdje. Mnoge od istraživanih tvrtki objavile su proglase o velikoj predanost održivosti okoliša. “Od nekih tvrtki od sam očekivao više, s obzirom na njihovu vrlo pozitivnu percepciju, kao što su Ikea, Unilever i Nestlé”, rekao je Day.

Corporate Climate Responsibility Monitor, NewClimate Institute i Carbon Market Watch, ocjenjivao je tvrtke prema kriterijima, uključujući njihove ciljeve, koliko kompenzacija planiraju koristiti i njihovu pouzdanost, ali i napredak u smanjenju vlastitih emisija i koliko su transparentni bili u svom postavljanju ciljeva i korporativnom izvješćivanju. Niti jedno od 25 ocijenjenih tvrtki nije ocijenjeno da postiže visok standard prema ovim mjerilima. Među onima koji su pokazali “nizak integritet” bili su Amazon i Ikea, dok su 11 tvrtki koje su bile najgore rangirane u studiji, pokazujući “vrlo nizak integritet”, uključivale E.ON i Nestlé.

Pretjerana upotreba kompenzacije bila je jedan od glavnih razloga zbog kojih je ocjena većine tvrtki smanjena, rekao je Day. Ova praksa je sve popularnija među tvrtkama koje žele poboljšati svoje zeleni kredibilitet, a očekuje se da će se to stanje još pogoršati kako se bude pribjegavalo daljnoj normalizaciji ove prakse, prenosi Guardian.

Kritičari kažu da je utvrđeno da su mnogi projekti nadoknade sumnjive vrijednosti, a neki su bili lažni. Šumarstvo je također loša zamjena za trenutačno smanjenje emisija jer ugljik koji se danas emitira u atmosferu počinje zagrijavati atmosferu sada i nastavlja to činiti barem jedno stoljeće, dok su drveću potrebna desetljeća da raste i pohrani ugljik apsorbiran iz zraka. Zagovornici se suprotstavljaju tome da je, s obzirom na to da je krčenje šuma rasprostranjeno diljem svijeta, očuvanje postojećih šuma jedan od najvažnijih načina rješavanja klimatske krize.

Day je rekao da korištenje kompenzacije obično prikriva jesu li tvrtke ostvarile istinski napredak u smanjenju vlastitih emisija ili se skrivaju iza kompenzacija kako bi postigle zamišljenu neto nulu. "Bolja je praksa ne kompenzirati - to je transparentnije i konstruktivnije", rekao je. “Tvrtke ne bi trebale tvrditi da su neto nula do 2030. osim ako do tada ne smanje svoje emisije za 90 posto.” Također je bio zabrinut zbog očite loše kvalitete nekih projekata nadoknade koje su tvrtke koristile. "Ako inzistiraju na kompenzaciji, barem bi to trebalo biti s kreditima za ugljik koji imaju više integriteta", rekao je.

Glasnogovornik Amazona poručio je da tvrtka ima cilj postići nultu neto emisiju ugljika do 2040.: “Postavili smo ove ambiciozne ciljeve jer znamo da su klimatske promjene ozbiljan problem i da je potrebno poduzeti više nego ikada. Amazon je na putu da do 2025. napaja naše poslovanje 100-postotnom obnovljivom energijom, pet godina ispred našeg prvobitnog cilja.”

Glasnogovornik Ikee je rekao: “Iako je Ikea već postigla mnogo, kao što je prekidanje veze između smanjenja naših apsolutnih emisija uz povećanje poslovnog rasta, imamo planove za rješavanje preostalih složenih izazova, kao što je klimatski otisak korištenih materijala u asortimanu Ikee.”

Benjamin Ware, globalni voditelj klimatske isporuke i održivog izvora u Nestléu, rekao je: “Pozdravljamo preispitivanje naših akcija i obveza u vezi s klimatskim promjenama. Međutim, izvješće nema razumijevanja za naš pristup i sadrži značajne netočnosti. Naš klimatski plan potvrđen je od strane Science-Based Targets Initiativea, tijela za korporativnu održivost. Posao koji je uložen u to je rigorozan i opsežan.”
