'Kere' je riječ koja, već četiri godine, odzvanja južnim Madagaskarom. Znači 'glad', pojam sa kojim su tamošnji ljudi i malo predobro upoznati. Za razliku od drugih zemalja, gdje je glad uzrokovana ratom, sukobima ili izoliranim vremenskim događajima, u ovom dijelu Madagaskara uzrok je za sada jedinstven; južni Madagaskar je na putu da postane prva zemlja moderne povijesti čiji će nedostatak hrane biti izravna posljedica - klimatskih promjena. 

Arduino Mangoni, zamjenik državnog direktora Svjetskog programa za hranu na Madagaskaru, rekao je za ABC News da 'nikada nije vidio narod, posebno djecu, u ovoj situaciji koju vidi ovdje'. 'Vidio sam ljude kako jedu lišće kaktusa, kukce i preživljavaju bez ičega, a nedostatak vode je vjerojatno najupečatljiviji element', kaže. Na ovoj drugoj najvećoj otočnoj državi (nakon Indonezije) u ovom trenutku njih 91 posto živi ispod granice siromaštva. 'Oni su patili od gladi... i umrli su. Gotovo ništa ne jedemo', govori žena koja je izgubila dvoje djece.

Južni Madagaskar proživljava najgoru sušu u posljednjih 40 godina, zbog čega je zemlja previše suha za poljoprivredu, a svaka sadnja rezultira propadanjem uroda. U posljednje četiri godine, veliki nedostatak kiše doveo je do potpunog iscrpljivanja izvora hrane i isušivanja rijeka. Klimatske promjene su također dovele do pješčanih oluja koje su poharale ova zemljišta, prekrile nekadašnje obradive površine neplodnim nanosima.

'Kako ljudi ovdje ne mogu saditi, to fatalno utječe na njihovu dostupnost hrane', opisuje Patrick Vercammen, koordinator za hitne slučajeve Svjetskog programa za hranu ovdje. Tijekom posjeta Akanka Fokotanyju, pogođenom selu, je svjedočio 'pješčanim olujama koje pokazuju da se priroda mijenja i da klimatske promjene utječu na ovo područje više nego na ostatak otoka.'

Ova očajna situacija je dovela do opće rasprostranjene pothranjenosti koja pogađa više od milijun ljudi. Ujedinjeni narodi tamošnja događanja klasificiraju kao 'katastrofalnu nesigurnostihrane koja signalizira dalnje produbljivanje gladi'. Madagaskar proizvodi samo 0,01 posto svjetske godišnje emisije ugljika u posljednjih osam desetljeća, ali zato trpi neke od najgorih posljedica. 'Nije pošteno... ti ljudi nisu doprinijeli klimatskim promjenama jer nemaju struju ni automobile, a plaćaju vjerojatno najveću cijenu u smislu posljedica klimatskih promjena', rekao je Mangoni.

Znanstveni dokazi pokazuju da su globalne klimatske promjene vjerojatno pridonijele višim temperaturama i sve nepravilnijim padalinama na polusušnom dubokom jugu zemlje, gdje je količina padalina ispod prosjeka već pet godina zaredom. 95% ljudi koji se suočavaju s akutnom nesigurnošću hrane na jugu Madagaskara oslanja se na uzgoj usjeva, stoku i ribolov. Međutim, ispodprosječne kišne sezone tijekom posljednjih nekoliko godina dovele su do ozbiljnog smanjenja proizvodnje osnovne hrane, uključujući rižu i manioku (korjenasta biljka od koje se proizvodi brašno), kao i do smanjenja veličine stada stoke i samih proporcija blaga. 

Najviše su pogođena djeca, a očekuje se da će najmanje pola milijuna djece mlađe od pet godina biti akutno pothranjeno, prema Svjetskom programu za hranu i UNICEF-u. U stvari, agencije kažu da je oko 110.000 djece već u teškom stanju i da trpe nepovratnu štetu u svom rastu i razvoju. Kako zemlja ulazi u 'mršavu sezonu', nepogodne vremenske uvjete tijekom kojeg ljudi čekaju sljedeću uspješnu berbu, potreba da se osigura hrana onima koji su u opasnosti od gladovanja postaje sve hitnija. Humanitarni djelatnici upozoravaju da bi bez opće mobilizacije mogli ostati bez hrane do kraja godine.

Svjetski program za hranu radi zajedno s vladom Madagaskasa na ublažavanju nekih od najakutnijih potreba u ovoj regiji; spriječavanju i liječenju djece koja pate od pothranjenosti, izgradnji infrastrukture i poticanju obrazovanja kako bi stanovništvo južnog Madagaskara postalo otpornije na sušu. Podržavaju više od 700.000 ljudi kojima je to prijeko potrebno, a očekuje se da će ta potreba rasti.

'Kere' je riječ koja, već četiri godine, odzvanja južnim Madagaskarom. Znači 'glad', pojam sa kojim su tamošnji ljudi i malo predobro upoznati. Za razliku od drugih zemalja, gdje je glad uzrokovana ratom, sukobima ili izoliranim vremenskim događajima, u ovom dijelu Madagaskara uzrok je za sada jedinstven; južni Madagaskar je na putu da postane prva zemlja moderne povijesti čiji će nedostatak hrane biti izravna posljedica - klimatskih promjena. 

Arduino Mangoni, zamjenik državnog direktora Svjetskog programa za hranu na Madagaskaru, rekao je za ABC News da 'nikada nije vidio narod, posebno djecu, u ovoj situaciji koju vidi ovdje'. 'Vidio sam ljude kako jedu lišće kaktusa, kukce i preživljavaju bez ičega, a nedostatak vode je vjerojatno najupečatljiviji element', kaže. Na ovoj drugoj najvećoj otočnoj državi (nakon Indonezije) u ovom trenutku njih 91 posto živi ispod granice siromaštva. 'Oni su patili od gladi... i umrli su. Gotovo ništa ne jedemo', govori žena koja je izgubila dvoje djece.

Južni Madagaskar proživljava najgoru sušu u posljednjih 40 godina, zbog čega je zemlja previše suha za poljoprivredu, a svaka sadnja rezultira propadanjem uroda. U posljednje četiri godine, veliki nedostatak kiše doveo je do potpunog iscrpljivanja izvora hrane i isušivanja rijeka. Klimatske promjene su također dovele do pješčanih oluja koje su poharale ova zemljišta, prekrile nekadašnje obradive površine neplodnim nanosima.

'Kako ljudi ovdje ne mogu saditi, to fatalno utječe na njihovu dostupnost hrane', opisuje Patrick Vercammen, koordinator za hitne slučajeve Svjetskog programa za hranu ovdje. Tijekom posjeta Akanka Fokotanyju, pogođenom selu, je svjedočio 'pješčanim olujama koje pokazuju da se priroda mijenja i da klimatske promjene utječu na ovo područje više nego na ostatak otoka.'

Ova očajna situacija je dovela do opće rasprostranjene pothranjenosti koja pogađa više od milijun ljudi. Ujedinjeni narodi tamošnja događanja klasificiraju kao 'katastrofalnu nesigurnostihrane koja signalizira dalnje produbljivanje gladi'. Madagaskar proizvodi samo 0,01 posto svjetske godišnje emisije ugljika u posljednjih osam desetljeća, ali zato trpi neke od najgorih posljedica. 'Nije pošteno... ti ljudi nisu doprinijeli klimatskim promjenama jer nemaju struju ni automobile, a plaćaju vjerojatno najveću cijenu u smislu posljedica klimatskih promjena', rekao je Mangoni.

Znanstveni dokazi pokazuju da su globalne klimatske promjene vjerojatno pridonijele višim temperaturama i sve nepravilnijim padalinama na polusušnom dubokom jugu zemlje, gdje je količina padalina ispod prosjeka već pet godina zaredom. 95% ljudi koji se suočavaju s akutnom nesigurnošću hrane na jugu Madagaskara oslanja se na uzgoj usjeva, stoku i ribolov. Međutim, ispodprosječne kišne sezone tijekom posljednjih nekoliko godina dovele su do ozbiljnog smanjenja proizvodnje osnovne hrane, uključujući rižu i manioku (korjenasta biljka od koje se proizvodi brašno), kao i do smanjenja veličine stada stoke i samih proporcija blaga. 

Najviše su pogođena djeca, a očekuje se da će najmanje pola milijuna djece mlađe od pet godina biti akutno pothranjeno, prema Svjetskom programu za hranu i UNICEF-u. U stvari, agencije kažu da je oko 110.000 djece već u teškom stanju i da trpe nepovratnu štetu u svom rastu i razvoju. Kako zemlja ulazi u 'mršavu sezonu', nepogodne vremenske uvjete tijekom kojeg ljudi čekaju sljedeću uspješnu berbu, potreba da se osigura hrana onima koji su u opasnosti od gladovanja postaje sve hitnija. Humanitarni djelatnici upozoravaju da bi bez opće mobilizacije mogli ostati bez hrane do kraja godine.

Svjetski program za hranu radi zajedno s vladom Madagaskasa na ublažavanju nekih od najakutnijih potreba u ovoj regiji; spriječavanju i liječenju djece koja pate od pothranjenosti, izgradnji infrastrukture i poticanju obrazovanja kako bi stanovništvo južnog Madagaskara postalo otpornije na sušu. Podržavaju više od 700.000 ljudi kojima je to prijeko potrebno, a očekuje se da će ta potreba rasti.

'Kere' je riječ koja, već četiri godine, odzvanja južnim Madagaskarom. Znači 'glad', pojam sa kojim su tamošnji ljudi i malo predobro upoznati. Za razliku od drugih zemalja, gdje je glad uzrokovana ratom, sukobima ili izoliranim vremenskim događajima, u ovom dijelu Madagaskara uzrok je za sada jedinstven; južni Madagaskar je na putu da postane prva zemlja moderne povijesti čiji će nedostatak hrane biti izravna posljedica - klimatskih promjena. 

Arduino Mangoni, zamjenik državnog direktora Svjetskog programa za hranu na Madagaskaru, rekao je za ABC News da 'nikada nije vidio narod, posebno djecu, u ovoj situaciji koju vidi ovdje'.
