Šesterokutni robot Odysseus tvrtke Intuitive Machines iz američkog grada Houstona trebao bi u prvim satima petka sletjeti na krater Malapert A na Mjesecu. Ako uspije, Odysseus će postati prva američka letjelica koja je na Mjesec sletjela unazad 50 godina.

Ova je ekspedicija dio NASA-inog nastojanja da komercijalnim letjelicama trasira put za povratak astronauta na Zemljin satelit do kraja desetljeća.

Pokušaj druge američke tvrtke da to učini prošli mjesec završio je neuspješno, što je privatnim tvrtkama otežalo dokazivanje da mogu ponoviti ono što je NASA učinila svojom zadnjom misijom na mjesec, Apollo 17, 1972. godine.

Scott Pace, direktor Space Policy Institutea na sveučilištu George Washington, rekao je agenciji France Presse da SAD ponovno jača svoje kapacitete za istraživanje Mjeseca, nakon nekoliko pola stoljeća stanke. "Ljudi se često pitaju - ‘ako smo to učinili u prošlosti, zašto ne možemo i sada?‘", kazao je Pace, bivši član Nacionalnog svemirskog vijeća. "Svaka generacija to mora iznova naučiti", dodao je. "Imate prednost, razumijete tehnologiju, probleme i drugo. No, to je sve u knjigama. To nije iskustvo letenja koje imate u malom prstu."

‘Odisej‘ je lansiran 15. veljače na SpaceX-ovoj raketi Falcon 9. NASA se nada da će s vremenom na Zemljinom satelitu uspostaviti dugotrajnu prisutnost te ondje iz leda prikupljati vodu za piće i za raketno gorivo. NASA to čini u sklopu programa Artemis čiji je cilj uspostaviti bazu na Mjesecu, preduvjet za buduće ljudske misije na Mars.

Instrumenti na Odysseusu uključuju kamere za istraživanje promjena Mjesečeve površine pod ispušnim plinovima motora svemirskog broda te uređaj za analizu oblaka nabijenih česticama prašine koji u sumrak lebde nad površinom zbog Sunčeva zračenja.

NASA je tvrtki platila 118 milijuna dolara da na Mjesec preveze njezin novi hardver, što je dio inicijative kojom Američka svemirska agencija želi delegirati prijevoz tereta na Mjesec privatnom sektoru kako bi uštedjela i potaknula lunarno gospodarstvo.

Prva privatna tvrtka koja je to pokušala bio je Astrobotic iz Pittsburgha, ali je iz njezine letjelice Peregrinea počelo curiti gorivo, zbog čega je na kraju vraćena da izgori u Zemljinoj atmosferi.

Svemirski brodovi koji slijeću na Mjesec moraju svladati opasne gromade i kratere i, u nedostatku atmosfere koja podržava padobrane, oslanjati se na potisnike koji kontroliraju njihovo spuštanje. Otprilike polovica od više od 50 dosadašnjih pokušaja bila je neuspješna.

Sletjeti na Mjesec dosad su uspjele samo svemirske agencije Sovjetskog Saveza, Sjedinjenih Država, Kine, Indije i Japana.

Šesterokutni robot Odysseus tvrtke Intuitive Machines iz američkog grada Houstona trebao bi u prvim satima petka sletjeti na krater Malapert A na Mjesecu. Ako uspije, Odysseus će postati prva američka letjelica koja je na Mjesec sletjela unazad 50 godina.

Ova je ekspedicija dio NASA-inog nastojanja da komercijalnim letjelicama trasira put za povratak astronauta na Zemljin satelit do kraja desetljeća.

Pokušaj druge američke tvrtke da to učini prošli mjesec završio je neuspješno, što je privatnim tvrtkama otežalo dokazivanje da mogu ponoviti ono što je NASA učinila svojom zadnjom misijom na mjesec, Apollo 17, 1972. godine.

Scott Pace, direktor Space Policy Institutea na sveučilištu George Washington, rekao je agenciji France Presse da SAD ponovno jača svoje kapacitete za istraživanje Mjeseca, nakon nekoliko pola stoljeća stanke. "Ljudi se često pitaju - ‘ako smo to učinili u prošlosti, zašto ne možemo i sada?‘", kazao je Pace, bivši član Nacionalnog svemirskog vijeća. "Svaka generacija to mora iznova naučiti", dodao je. "Imate prednost, razumijete tehnologiju, probleme i drugo. No, to je sve u knjigama. To nije iskustvo letenja koje imate u malom prstu."

‘Odisej‘ je lansiran 15. veljače na SpaceX-ovoj raketi Falcon 9. NASA se nada da će s vremenom na Zemljinom satelitu uspostaviti dugotrajnu prisutnost te ondje iz leda prikupljati vodu za piće i za raketno gorivo. NASA to čini u sklopu programa Artemis čiji je cilj uspostaviti bazu na Mjesecu, preduvjet za buduće ljudske misije na Mars.

Instrumenti na Odysseusu uključuju kamere za istraživanje promjena Mjesečeve površine pod ispušnim plinovima motora svemirskog broda te uređaj za analizu oblaka nabijenih česticama prašine koji u sumrak lebde nad površinom zbog Sunčeva zračenja.

NASA je tvrtki platila 118 milijuna dolara da na Mjesec preveze njezin novi hardver, što je dio inicijative kojom Američka svemirska agencija želi delegirati prijevoz tereta na Mjesec privatnom sektoru kako bi uštedjela i potaknula lunarno gospodarstvo.

Prva privatna tvrtka koja je to pokušala bio je Astrobotic iz Pittsburgha, ali je iz njezine letjelice Peregrinea počelo curiti gorivo, zbog čega je na kraju vraćena da izgori u Zemljinoj atmosferi.

Svemirski brodovi koji slijeću na Mjesec moraju svladati opasne gromade i kratere i, u nedostatku atmosfere koja podržava padobrane, oslanjati se na potisnike koji kontroliraju njihovo spuštanje. Otprilike polovica od više od 50 dosadašnjih pokušaja bila je neuspješna.

Sletjeti na Mjesec dosad su uspjele samo svemirske agencije Sovjetskog Saveza, Sjedinjenih Država, Kine, Indije i Japana.
