"Godine 2004. kada je Marija Šarapova sa svega 17 godina osvojila naslov pobjednice u Wimbledonu, prosjek godina pobjednica sva četiri Grand Slama u sezoni bio je 20. U protekle dvije sezone (2011. i 2012.) prosjek godina popeo se na 26! No, sada su opet tinejdžerice "in", a igračica koja trenira u Velikoj Britaniji i privlači najviše pažnje gdje god se pojavi je 16-godišnja hrvatska tenisačica Donna Vekić", tim je riječima Daily Mail predstavio našu Osječanku.

"Vekić je u dosadašnjoj kratkoj karijeri dogurala do dva WTA finala, a posljednji je bio prije tjedan dana u Birminghamu. Usporedbe sa Šarapovom su neizbježne i ona je njih svjesna."

- Ne smeta me, već mi je to u neku ruku kompliment. No ja prije svega želim biti Donna Vekić, a ne sljedeća Marija Šarapova ili Caroline Wozniacki, iako im malo sličim. Malo je tinejdžerica u Top 100 i drago mi je da sam ja od svih njih najmlađa. Igra se danas sve više bazira na fizičkoj snazi, tako da osim nas nekoliko iznimki nema puno mjesta za juniore – rekla je Vekić za Daily Mail dan uoči svoj prvog natupa na ovogodišnjem Wimbledonu protiv Petre Četkovske.

Već pet i pol godina Vekić surađuje s bivšim trenerom ponajboljeg britanskog tenisača svih vremena Tima Henmana – Davidom Felgateom.

- Željela sam raditi s Davidom od samog početka. Imamo sjajan odnos i imati britanskog trenera za vrijeme travnate sezone je samo dodatan plus. Cijelu mi godinu daje veliku podršku i na tome sam mu jako zahvalna. On je glavni razlog mog uspjeha i nadam se da će jednog dana o njemu govoriti da je to bio trener Donne Vekić, a ne više Tima Henmana. To bi me jako usrećilo – veli Osječanka koja će u petak proslaviti 17. rođendan.

Felgate tvrdi da nije odmah prepoznao talent u hrvatskoj tenisačici, no veli da je njen trud na treninzima enorman.

- Donnin omjer pobjeda i poraza je nevjerojatan, ali mi se već sad spremamo za razdoblje njene karijere kada će imati 20, 21 godinu, kada u potpunosti sazrije kao igračica. Njeno srce i glava igraju veliku ulogu u njezinom talentu. Radi naporno na svakom treningu i pažljivo sluša. No moram priznati da nisam odmah vidio taj talent. Vjerojatno zato jer nisam dobar u prepoznavanju istoga – kaže Felgate, te zaključuje.

- Donna i Madison Keys (18, SAD) su dvije najbolje juniorske igračice koje se mogu nositi sa seniorkama. No, s obzirom da se današnji tenis bazira isključivo na fizičkoj snazi, sumnjam da će jedna od njih osvojiti neki od velikih turnira tako brzo. Mislim da više nikada nećemo vidjeti igračice poput Martine Hingis i Ane Kurnjikove koje su kao 16-godišnjakinje osvajale najveće turnire.

U protekle dvije sezone (2011. i 2012.) prosjek godina popeo se na 26! No, sada su opet tinejdžerice "in", a igračica koja trenira u Velikoj Britaniji i privlači najviše pažnje gdje god se pojavi je 16-godišnja hrvatska tenisačica Donna Vekić", tim je riječima Daily Mail predstavio našu Osječanku.

"Vekić je u dosadašnjoj kratkoj karijeri dogurala do dva WTA finala, a posljednji je bio prije tjedan dana u Birminghamu. Usporedbe sa Šarapovom su neizbježne i ona je njih svjesna."

- Ne smeta me, već mi je to u neku ruku kompliment. No ja prije svega želim biti Donna Vekić, a ne sljedeća Marija Šarapova ili Caroline Wozniacki, iako im malo sličim. Malo je tinejdžerica u Top 100 i drago mi je da sam ja od svih njih najmlađa. Igra se danas sve više bazira na fizičkoj snazi, tako da osim nas nekoliko iznimki nema puno mjesta za juniore – rekla je Vekić za Daily Mail dan uoči svoj prvog natupa na ovogodišnjem Wimbledonu protiv Petre Četkovske.

Već pet i pol godina Vekić surađuje s bivšim trenerom ponajboljeg britanskog tenisača svih vremena Tima Henmana – Davidom Felgateom.

- Željela sam raditi s Davidom od samog početka. Imamo sjajan odnos i imati britanskog trenera za vrijeme travnate sezone je samo dodatan plus. Cijelu mi godinu daje veliku podršku i na tome sam mu jako zahvalna. On je glavni razlog mog uspjeha i nadam se da će jednog dana o njemu govoriti da je to bio trener Donne Vekić, a ne više Tima Henmana. To bi me jako usrećilo – veli Osječanka koja će u petak proslaviti 17. rođendan.

Felgate tvrdi da nije odmah prepoznao talent u hrvatskoj tenisačici, no veli da je njen trud na treninzima enorman.

- Donnin omjer pobjeda i poraza je nevjerojatan, ali mi se već sad spremamo za razdoblje njene karijere kada će imati 20, 21 godinu, kada u potpunosti sazrije kao igračica. Njeno srce i glava igraju veliku ulogu u njezinom talentu. Radi naporno na svakom treningu i pažljivo sluša. No moram priznati da nisam odmah vidio taj talent. Vjerojatno zato jer nisam dobar u prepoznavanju istoga – kaže Felgate, te zaključuje.

- Donna i Madison Keys (18, SAD) su dvije najbolje juniorske igračice koje se mogu nositi sa seniorkama. No, s obzirom da se današnji tenis bazira isključivo na fizičkoj snazi, sumnjam da će jedna od njih osvojiti neki od velikih turnira tako brzo. Mislim da više nikada nećemo vidjeti igračice poput Martine Hingis i Ane Kurnjikove koje su kao 16-godišnjakinje osvajale najveće turnire.
