Argentinac Juan Martin del Potro posljednji je sudionik polufinala US Opena nakon što je u četvrtfinalnom ogledu pobijedio Švicarca Rogera Federera 7-5, 3-6, 7-6 (8), 6-4.
Del Potro će u polufinalu igrati protiv Španjolca Rafaela Nadala, dok drugi polufinalni par čine Južnoafrikanac Kevin Anderson i Španjolac Pablo Carreno Busta.
Premda je većina stručnjaka najavljivala Federerovu pobjedu, Argentinac je sve iznenadio.
"Bio je to moj najbolji meč na ovom turniru, zaista sam odigrao sjajno," kazao je 28-godišnji Del Potro otkrivši formulu uspjeha. "Odlično sam servirao, a forehand sam udarao najjače što sam mogao."
Del Potro je posljednjih godina imao velikih problema s ozljedama. Čak je razmišljao o prekidu karijere.
"Ne mogu vam opisati koliko mi znači ova pobjeda. Nakon svih silnih problema koje sam imao s ozljedama stigao samo do polufinala US Opena, meni najdražeg turnira," dodao je Del Potro koji je do sada na US Openu samo jednom stigao do polufinala. I to 2009. kada je i osvojio posljednji Grand Slam turnir sezone.
Federer je mogao samo čestitati svom suparniku.
"Bio je to zanimljiv i otvoren meč. Juan je odigrao najbolje kada je to trebalo. Naravno, da sam razočaran, ali bio je bolji, posebice u ključnim poenima," kazao je Federer kojem je ovo bio 17. nastup u New Yorku, a do sada je upisao pet pobjeda, od 2004. do 2008.
Bio je to njihov 21. međusobni susret i tek peta Del Potrova pobjeda, pri čemu prva nakon 2013. godine.
Del Potra sada očekuje Španjolac Nadal. Bit će to repriza njihova polufinalnog ogleda iz 2009. godine kada je Argentinac uvjerljivo dobio (6-2, 6-2, 6-2), a potom preko Federera osvojio svoj jedini Grand Slam naslov.
Nakon te pobjede Argentinac je imao tri operacije zgloba, sa četvrtog mjesta na ATP ljestvici je pao na 135. mjesto i ponovo se vinuo u vrh.
"Mnogo toga se od tada dogodilo. No, sada sam maksimalno koncentriran na idući meč. Nisam u najboljem fizičkom stanju, no ukoliko odigram svoj najbolji tenis mogu do pobjede. Kada igraš polufinale na najdražem turniru protiv tenisača kao što je Nadal onda sve zaboraviš. Pokušat ću uživati u meču i atmosferi," poručio je.
Del Potro i Nadal su do sada igrali 13. puta i Nadal vodi 8-5 u pobjedama. Međutim, zadnja dva puta dobio je Argentinac. Prošle godine u polufinalu na OI u Rio de Janeiru, te 2013. u Šangaju.

Argentinac Juan Martin del Potro posljednji je sudionik polufinala US Opena nakon što je u četvrtfinalnom ogledu pobijedio Švicarca Rogera Federera 7-5, 3-6, 7-6 (8), 6-4.
Del Potro će u polufinalu igrati protiv Španjolca Rafaela Nadala, dok drugi polufinalni par čine Južnoafrikanac Kevin Anderson i Španjolac Pablo Carreno Busta.
Premda je većina stručnjaka najavljivala Federerovu pobjedu, Argentinac je sve iznenadio.
"Bio je to moj najbolji meč na ovom turniru, zaista sam odigrao sjajno," kazao je 28-godišnji Del Potro otkrivši formulu uspjeha. "Odlično sam servirao, a forehand sam udarao najjače što sam mogao."
Del Potro je posljednjih godina imao velikih problema s ozljedama. Čak je razmišljao o prekidu karijere.
"Ne mogu vam opisati koliko mi znači ova pobjeda. Nakon svih silnih problema koje sam imao s ozljedama stigao samo do polufinala US Opena, meni najdražeg turnira," dodao je Del Potro koji je do sada na US Openu samo jednom stigao do polufinala. I to 2009. kada je i osvojio posljednji Grand Slam turnir sezone.
Federer je mogao samo čestitati svom suparniku.
"Bio je to zanimljiv i otvoren meč. Juan je odigrao najbolje kada je to trebalo. Naravno, da sam razočaran, ali bio je bolji, posebice u ključnim poenima," kazao je Federer kojem je ovo bio 17. nastup u New Yorku, a do sada je upisao pet pobjeda, od 2004. do 2008.
Bio je to njihov 21. međusobni susret i tek peta Del Potrova pobjeda, pri čemu prva nakon 2013. godine.
Del Potra sada očekuje Španjolac Nadal. Bit će to repriza njihova polufinalnog ogleda iz 2009. godine kada je Argentinac uvjerljivo dobio (6-2, 6-2, 6-2), a potom preko Federera osvojio svoj jedini Grand Slam naslov.
Nakon te pobjede Argentinac je imao tri operacije zgloba, sa četvrtog mjesta na ATP ljestvici je pao na 135. mjesto i ponovo se vinuo u vrh.
"Mnogo toga se od tada dogodilo. No, sada sam maksimalno koncentriran na idući meč. Nisam u najboljem fizičkom stanju, no ukoliko odigram svoj najbolji tenis mogu do pobjede. Kada igraš polufinale na najdražem turniru protiv tenisača kao što je Nadal onda sve zaboraviš. Pokušat ću uživati u meču i atmosferi," poručio je.
Del Potro i Nadal su do sada igrali 13. puta i Nadal vodi 8-5 u pobjedama. Međutim, zadnja dva puta dobio je Argentinac. Prošle godine u polufinalu na OI u Rio de Janeiru, te 2013. u Šangaju.
