Hrvatski tenis ostao je u noći s petka na subotu bez predstavnika u pojedinačnoj konkurenciji na posljednjem Grand Slam turniru sezone US Openu, gdje je nakon Marina Čilića i Borne Ćorića, svoj put u 3. kolu završila i Osječanka Donna Vekić koju je sa 6-2, 6-3 nadigrala Latvijka Anastasija Sevastova, 16. nositeljica turnira u New Yorku.

Vekić je imala priliku po prvi puta u karijeri probiti se u osminu finala na Grand Slam turnirima, ali je nakon dva sjajna nastupa protiv Brazilke Haddad Maije i Kineskinje Shuai Peng, u dvoboju sa Sevastovom doživjela potpuni kolaps.

Latvijka je za 65 minuta došla do pobjede koja je mogla biti i uvjerljivija, jer je Sevastova vodila 6-2, 5-0. Do tog trenutka Vekić nije uspjela osvojiti nijedan gem na servisu. Ipak, nije se predala i nizom od tri gema zaprijetila je Sevastovoj koja je pokazala prve znakove nesigurnosti.

Imala je Donna i 15-40 u devetom gemu, ali do novog 'breaka' nije došla. Sevastova se izvukla kombinacijom dobrih servisa i pogrešaka naše tenisačice te prvu meč-loptu pretvorila u pobjedu vrijednu plasmana u osminu finala, gdje je već bila i prošle godine, kad je upravo na US Openu prvi put u karijeri došla do četvrtfinala na Grand Slam turnirima.

Vekić je dvoboj završila sa 29 neforsiranih pogrešaka, 12 više od suparnice, te sa samo 18 'winnera', tri više nego što ih je imala Sevastova. Donna je u ovom dvoboju čak šest puta izgubila servis, a u prva dva meča nijednom.

Vekić je poražena na Grandstandu koji se petog dana US Opena pokazao nesretnim za hrvatske predstavnike, jer su prije 21-godišnje Osječanke na istom stadionu svoj put na ovogodišnjem US Openu završili Marin Čilić i Borna Ćorića. Od pobjednika US Opena 2014. bolji je bio 33. tenisač svijeta, Argentinac Diego Schwartzman sa 4-6, 7-5, 7-5, 6-4. Borna Ćorić je svoj nastup završio u dvoboju s 28. nositeljem, Južnoafrikancem Kevinom Andersonom koji ga je svladao sa 6-4, 6-3, 6-2.

Hrvatski tenis ostao je u noći s petka na subotu bez predstavnika u pojedinačnoj konkurenciji na posljednjem Grand Slam turniru sezone US Openu, gdje je nakon Marina Čilića i Borne Ćorića, svoj put u 3. kolu završila i Osječanka Donna Vekić koju je sa 6-2, 6-3 nadigrala Latvijka Anastasija Sevastova, 16. nositeljica turnira u New Yorku.

Vekić je imala priliku po prvi puta u karijeri probiti se u osminu finala na Grand Slam turnirima, ali je nakon dva sjajna nastupa protiv Brazilke Haddad Maije i Kineskinje Shuai Peng, u dvoboju sa Sevastovom doživjela potpuni kolaps.

Latvijka je za 65 minuta došla do pobjede koja je mogla biti i uvjerljivija, jer je Sevastova vodila 6-2, 5-0. Do tog trenutka Vekić nije uspjela osvojiti nijedan gem na servisu. Ipak, nije se predala i nizom od tri gema zaprijetila je Sevastovoj koja je pokazala prve znakove nesigurnosti.

Imala je Donna i 15-40 u devetom gemu, ali do novog 'breaka' nije došla. Sevastova se izvukla kombinacijom dobrih servisa i pogrešaka naše tenisačice te prvu meč-loptu pretvorila u pobjedu vrijednu plasmana u osminu finala, gdje je već bila i prošle godine, kad je upravo na US Openu prvi put u karijeri došla do četvrtfinala na Grand Slam turnirima.

Vekić je dvoboj završila sa 29 neforsiranih pogrešaka, 12 više od suparnice, te sa samo 18 'winnera', tri više nego što ih je imala Sevastova. Donna je u ovom dvoboju čak šest puta izgubila servis, a u prva dva meča nijednom.

Vekić je poražena na Grandstandu koji se petog dana US Opena pokazao nesretnim za hrvatske predstavnike, jer su prije 21-godišnje Osječanke na istom stadionu svoj put na ovogodišnjem US Openu završili Marin Čilić i Borna Ćorića. Od pobjednika US Opena 2014. bolji je bio 33. tenisač svijeta, Argentinac Diego Schwartzman sa 4-6, 7-5, 7-5, 6-4. Borna Ćorić je svoj nastup završio u dvoboju s 28. nositeljem, Južnoafrikancem Kevinom Andersonom koji ga je svladao sa 6-4, 6-3, 6-2.
