Kultni brazilski klub Santos, "kolijevka" pokojne nogometne legende Pelea, ispao je u drugu ligu u srijedu po prvi put u svojoj 111 godina staroj povijesti. Malo prije prve godišnjice smrti jednog od najvećih ikada, Santos je pretrpio poraz 1:2 kod kuće od Fortaleze u posljednjoj ligaškoj utakmici ove sezone, zapečativši svoju sudbinu kao posljednja od četiri momčadi osuđene na ligu Seriju B sljedeće godine. U 39. minuti Fortaleza je povela 1:0 preko Marinha, izjednačio je Messias u 58., da bi konačan udarac Santosu zadao Lucero u 96. minuti za slavlje Fortaleze - pišu Sportske novosti.

Matični klub Pelea završio je svoju blijedu sezonu na 17. mjestu s 43 boda - jednim manje od Bahije, koja je izbjegla ispadanje pobjedom 4:1 nad Atletico Mineirom. Palmeiras je obranio svoj prošlogodišnji naslov prvaka, dok je Gremio predvođen Luisom Suarezom završio na iznenađujućem drugom mjestu sa 68 bodova, zahvaljujući golu urugvajskog napadača u njihovoj 3:2 pobjedi protiv Fluminensea.

Za vrijeme Pelea, Santos je postao jedan od najprepoznatijih klubova u svjetskom nogometu, bilo je to u njihovoj zlatnoj eri u 50-im i 60-im godinama prošlog stoljeća. Pele je proveo 19 godina u Santosu od 1956. do 1974. i postigao 569 golova te ušao u povijest kao jedan od najboljih napadača svih vremena. Santos je osvojio svojih prvih šest naslova u Serie A s Peleom, a zadnja dva 2002. i 2004. Pele, koji je umro od raka u prosincu 2022., bio je ogrnut zastavom Santos FC-a.

Također su osvojili Copa Libertadores, južnoamerički ekvivalent Lige prvaka, 1962. i 1963., iste godine kada su osvojili i Interkontinentalni kup, trofej za koji su se natjecale najbolje momčadi iz Europe i Južne Amerike.

Ostali veliki brazilski klubovi dolaze iz metropola. Sa populacijom manjom od pola milijuna, Santos je lučki grad u blizini São Paula. Pele i njegova prateća postava borili su se protiv svih koji su dolazili, a posljednjih godina odličan rad na razvoju mladih održavao je klub konkurentnim. Ali u modernom dobu, kada su se otvorile financijske razlike između brazilskih klubova, bilo je teško zamisliti kako bi Santos mogao ostati na vrhu.

Santos je bio jedan od tri kluba uz Sao Paolo i Flamengo koji nikada nisu ispali iz prve lige. Osim Pelea, sadašnji kapetan brazilskih nogometaša Neymar također je započeo svoju karijeru u Santosu gdje je zabio preko 100 golova prije nego što se pridružio španjolskom velikanu Barceloni. Napadač Real Madrida u usponu Rodrygo također je stigao iz Santosa za 45 milijuna eura 2019. godine. Neymar, koji je ponikao u Santosovoj akademiji, objavio je slike na društvenim mrežama kako gleda utakmicu dok se oporavlja od ozljede koljena.

U proteklih nekoliko mjeseci, nakon više od dvije godine otuđenja koje je čak rezultiralo i pravnom bitkom, Neymar se ponovno povezao s upravom Santosa.

Zvijezda brazilske reprezentacije u travnju je bio u Vili Belmiro, naselju gdje je stadion i gledao remi bez golova protiv Audax Italiana u Copa Sudamericani, te obećao povratak u klub koji je započeo njegovu karijeru.

Posebno teško su ispadanje podnijeli navijači Santosa, koji su svoje frustracije izbacili na ulicama istoimenog grada. Na transparentu koji su razvili na stadionu pisalo je:

"Drugi, ponekad. U drugoj ligi, nikad."

I prije kraja utakmice posljednjeg kola brazilske Serie A navijači su kamenjem i drugim predmetima gađali policiju. Službenici za provođenje zakona odgovorili su šok granatama i suzavcem.

Nakon utakmice neredi su nastavljeni, navijači su palili autobuse i automobile, kante za smeće, znakove i zgrade. Helikopteri i vojna policija pozvani su da pojačaju sigurnost. Broj žrtava i zatočenih nije preciziran. Prije samo tri godine Palmeiras je pobijedio Santos u finalu Copa Libertadores, a trenutna sramota dolazi nakon ekonomskih i sportskih problema u Santosu.

Kultni brazilski klub Santos, "kolijevka" pokojne nogometne legende Pelea, ispao je u drugu ligu u srijedu po prvi put u svojoj 111 godina staroj povijesti. Za vrijeme Pelea, Santos je postao jedan od najprepoznatijih klubova u svjetskom nogometu, bilo je to u njihovoj zlatnoj eri u 50-im i 60-im godinama prošlog stoljeća.
