Sportaši su obolijevali, najpoznatiji primjer je vjerojatno najveća zvijezda baseballa svih vremena Babe Ruth, a neki su među njima nažalost i umirali.
Od posljedica zaraze umirali su i sportski suci, pa i sportski novinari. Lige i mečevi su se prekidali, odgađali. Neki nikada nisu ni završeni. Tako je izgledao sport u doba pandemije španjolske gripe od 1918. do 1920. godine.
Svijet sporta stao je sada zbog pandemije koronavirusa, osim u nekim državama poput Bjelorusije gdje se lokalni moćnici igraju tuđim zdravljem i životima. Pitanje je kada će se ponovno sve pokrenuti. Nešto slično svijet sporta pogodilo je i prije stotinjak godina kada je pandemija španjolske gripe također zaustavljala natjecanja, kada su također sportaši obolijevali, ali pojedinci i umirali.
Uz napomenu da je tada sport uglavnom već i prije širenja zaraze bio na pauzi zbog Prvog svjetskog rata. Tek se početkom 1919., s povratkom miru polako vraćao u normalniji ritam. Čemu je na putu stajala gripa. Koja je nakon kraja rata u sportu najteže posljedice ostavila u SAD-u i Kanadi kada je tamo 1919. bjesnio val gripe.
Naravno, kod nekih stvari se i ne mogu povlačiti paralele. Prije svega zbog toga što je tijekom pandemije gripe koja je trajala dvije godine zaraženo oko pola milijarde ljudi, polovica tadašnje ukupne svjetske populacije. Procjene su da ih je preminulo od najmanje 17 do čak 50 milijuna. Neki čak barataju i brojkom od 100 milijuna umrlih.
Procjenjuje se da je na području Hrvatske tada od gripe umrlo oko 109 tisuća ljudi. Bolest je tada najviše pogađala mladu populaciju. Za usporedbu, u Prvom svjetskom ratu krajem kojeg je pandemija krenula smrtno je stradalo po procjenama od 20 do 22 milijuna ljudi. Ujedno, svijet sporta tada i sada su dva različita svijeta, prije svega zbog globalizacije, popularnosti, više publike... Međutim, i tada je sport gotovo pa stao.
500 milijuna zaraženih
Tada su također preporuke i zabrane stanovništvu bile izbjegavanje okupljanja, higijena i pranje ruku kao i sada. Zatvarani su stadioni, dvorane. Među tih 500 milijuna zaraženih bili su i mnogi poznati sportaši, suci, sportski novinari. Među njima je vjerojatno prvo ime legenda baseballa Babe Ruth. Ipak, George Herman Babe Ruth Junior se oporavio. Neki drugi igrači, suci nisu.
Španjolska gripa koja ironije li nije ni krenula iz Španjolske kako se tada pretpostavljalo (više je verzija, Francuska, SAD, Kina...) veliku pomutnju napravila je u NHL-u. Finalna serija sezone sjevernoameričke hokejaške lige koja je startala u prosincu 1918. na koncu je morala biti prekinuta. Nikada Stanley Cup nije dodijeljen za 1919. godinu. Nakon pete utakmice finalne serije između Montreal Canadiensa i Seattle Metropolitansa finale je prekinuto.
Pri skoru 2-2 (i jedan remi), unatoč pobjedi u petom susretu igrači Montreala nisu slavili jer se tijekom ogleda srušio njihov igrač Joe Hall (37), trostruki osvajač Stanley Cupa.
Potom je u dva dana između pete i šeste nikad odigrane utakmice mnogo igrača jedne i druge momčadi počelo teško obolijevati, kao i generalni menadžer kanadskog sastava George Kennedy. Hall je hospitaliziran. Montreal je htio predati finale, ali iz Seattlea nisu htjeli na taj način osvojiti titulu i sve je stalo. Kao i srce Halla. Preminuo je u travnju 1919. od upale pluća kao posljedice gripe.
Na trofeju, famoznom Stanley Cupu za 1919. godinu piše “Seatlle Metropolitans Montreal Canadiens, series not completed”. Jedini je to put u povijesti da na kraju sezone nije bilo pobjednika, uključujući čak i dva svjetska rata. Za usporedbu s današnjim vremenima broj gledatelja na susretima te sezone bio je skroman, Ottawa ih je u prosjeku imala ispod sto.
Prije toga još 1918. od posljedica španjolske gripe preminuo je i Hamby Shore, hokejaška zvijezda Ottawa Senattorsa. Jedan od najpoznatijih sudaca baseballa u MLB-u Silk O’Loughlin, igrač baseballa Larry Chappell... također su tih godina preminuli, kao i između ostalih sportskih novinara i onaj “Boston Globea” Eddie Martin.
Zbog španjolske gripe odgođen je i boksački meč između kasnijeg svjetskog prvaka u teškoj kategoriji Jacka Dempseya (vladao je od 1919. do 1926.) i Barneya Lebrowitza. Na kraju su boksali u studenome 1918. u Philadelphiji. Stao je i sport na američkim koledžima.
Do 1920. godine zaraza se koliko toliko suzbila, kontrolirala. Elitni razred engleskog nogometa odigrao je sezonu 1919.-1920., prvu poslijeratnu. Prvak je bio West Bromwich Albion. U kolovozu i rujnu 1920. održane su i Olimpijske igre u Antwerpenu. Nastupilo je 2626 sportaša i sportašica iz 29 država.
Te 1920. odigralo se i prvo Prvenstvo splitskog nogometnog podsaveza u kojem je Hajduk zauzeo drugo mjesto iza momčadi Juga (prvenstva Jugoslavije krenula su tek 1923.). Godinu ranije 1919. Hajduk je po podacima s klupske stranice odigrao čak 55 prijateljskih susreta, više od polovine protiv posada savezničkih ratnih brodova koji su tada boravili u gradu pod Marjanom..

Sportaši su obolijevali, najpoznatiji primjer je vjerojatno najveća zvijezda baseballa svih vremena Babe Ruth, a neki su među njima nažalost i umirali.
Od posljedica zaraze umirali su i sportski suci, pa i sportski novinari. Lige i mečevi su se prekidali, odgađali. Neki nikada nisu ni završeni. Tako je izgledao sport u doba pandemije španjolske gripe od 1918. do 1920. godine.
Svijet sporta stao je sada zbog pandemije koronavirusa, osim u nekim državama poput Bjelorusije gdje se lokalni moćnici igraju tuđim zdravljem i životima. Pitanje je kada će se ponovno sve pokrenuti. Nešto slično svijet sporta pogodilo je i prije stotinjak godina kada je pandemija španjolske gripe također zaustavljala natjecanja, kada su također sportaši obolijevali, ali pojedinci i umirali.
Uz napomenu da je tada sport uglavnom već i prije širenja zaraze bio na pauzi zbog Prvog svjetskog rata. Tek se početkom 1919., s povratkom miru polako vraćao u normalniji ritam. Čemu je na putu stajala gripa. Koja je nakon kraja rata u sportu najteže posljedice ostavila u SAD-u i Kanadi kada je tamo 1919. bjesnio val gripe.
Naravno, kod nekih stvari se i ne mogu povlačiti paralele. Prije svega zbog toga što je tijekom pandemije gripe koja je trajala dvije godine zaraženo oko pola milijarde ljudi, polovica tadašnje ukupne svjetske populacije. Procjene su da ih je preminulo od najmanje 17 do čak 50 milijuna. Neki čak barataju i brojkom od 100 milijuna umrlih.
Procjenjuje se da je na području Hrvatske tada od gripe umrlo oko 109 tisuća ljudi. Bolest je tada najviše pogađala mladu populaciju. Za usporedbu, u Prvom svjetskom ratu krajem kojeg je pandemija krenula smrtno je stradalo po procjenama od 20 do 22 milijuna ljudi. Ujedno, svijet sporta tada i sada su dva različita svijeta, prije svega zbog globalizacije, popularnosti, više publike... Međutim, i tada je sport gotovo pa stao.
500 milijuna zaraženih
Tada su također preporuke i zabrane stanovništvu bile izbjegavanje okupljanja, higijena i pranje ruku kao i sada. Zatvarani su stadioni, dvorane. Među tih 500 milijuna zaraženih bili su i mnogi poznati sportaši, suci, sportski novinari. Među njima je vjerojatno prvo ime legenda baseballa Babe Ruth. Ipak, George Herman Babe Ruth Junior se oporavio. Neki drugi igrači, suci nisu.
Španjolska gripa koja ironije li nije ni krenula iz Španjolske kako se tada pretpostavljalo (više je verzija, Francuska, SAD, Kina...) veliku pomutnju napravila je u NHL-u. Finalna serija sezone sjevernoameričke hokejaške lige koja je startala u prosincu 1918. na koncu je morala biti prekinuta. Nikada Stanley Cup nije dodijeljen za 1919. godinu. Nakon pete utakmice finalne serije između Montreal Canadiensa i Seattle Metropolitansa finale je prekinuto.
Pri skoru 2-2 (i jedan remi), unatoč pobjedi u petom susretu igrači Montreala nisu slavili jer se tijekom ogleda srušio njihov igrač Joe Hall (37), trostruki osvajač Stanley Cupa.
Potom je u dva dana između pete i šeste nikad odigrane utakmice mnogo igrača jedne i druge momčadi počelo teško obolijevati, kao i generalni menadžer kanadskog sastava George Kennedy. Hall je hospitaliziran. Montreal je htio predati finale, ali iz Seattlea nisu htjeli na taj način osvojiti titulu i sve je stalo. Kao i srce Halla. Preminuo je u travnju 1919. od upale pluća kao posljedice gripe.
Na trofeju, famoznom Stanley Cupu za 1919. godinu piše “Seatlle Metropolitans Montreal Canadiens, series not completed”. Jedini je to put u povijesti da na kraju sezone nije bilo pobjednika, uključujući čak i dva svjetska rata. Za usporedbu s današnjim vremenima broj gledatelja na susretima te sezone bio je skroman, Ottawa ih je u prosjeku imala ispod sto.
Prije toga još 1918. od posljedica španjolske gripe preminuo je i Hamby Shore, hokejaška zvijezda Ottawa Senattorsa. Jedan od najpoznatijih sudaca baseballa u MLB-u Silk O’Loughlin, igrač baseballa Larry Chappell... također su tih godina preminuli, kao i između ostalih sportskih novinara i onaj “Boston Globea” Eddie Martin.
Zbog španjolske gripe odgođen je i boksački meč između kasnijeg svjetskog prvaka u teškoj kategoriji Jacka Dempseya (vladao je od 1919. do 1926.) i Barneya Lebrowitza. Na kraju su boksali u studenome 1918. u Philadelphiji. Stao je i sport na američkim koledžima.
Do 1920. godine zaraza se koliko toliko suzbila, kontrolirala. Elitni razred engleskog nogometa odigrao je sezonu 1919.-1920., prvu poslijeratnu. Prvak je bio West Bromwich Albion. U kolovozu i rujnu 1920. održane su i Olimpijske igre u Antwerpenu. Nastupilo je 2626 sportaša i sportašica iz 29 država.
Te 1920. odigralo se i prvo Prvenstvo splitskog nogometnog podsaveza u kojem je Hajduk zauzeo drugo mjesto iza momčadi Juga (prvenstva Jugoslavije krenula su tek 1923.). Godinu ranije 1919. Hajduk je po podacima s klupske stranice odigrao čak 55 prijateljskih susreta, više od polovine protiv posada savezničkih ratnih brodova koji su tada boravili u gradu pod Marjanom..
