Marija Ruljancich u subotu je proslavila 107. rođendan. Ona je živi svjedok blagoslova društvene izolacije tijekom pandemije, ali ne u ovom današnjem vremenu koronavirusa, njezina priča o preživljavanju stara je cijelo stoljeće.
Marijinom životnom pričom ovih se dana bavio dnevni list "The Sydney Morning Herald", a njezina duboka starost znači da je Marija jedna od rijetkih osoba koje još pamte pandemiju španjolske gripe 1918./19. godine, koja je ubila desetke milijuna ljudi. Premda je bila dijete, rođena je 1913. godine, sjeća se neprekidne udaljene zvonjave crkvenih zvona koja su označavala smrt brojnih stanovnika njezina rodnog otoka Visa.
Ali ni ona, ni bilo tko od njezine obitelji i nekolicine susjeda u seocetu Lorca nije se zarazio virusom gripe, njihova sreća bila je nenamjerna izolacija. U godinama prije pandemije španjolske gripe bolest poznata kao filoksera napala je obiteljski vinograd i uništila stare nasade vinove loze koji su obitelji omogućavali pristojan život.
Ostavši bez prihoda, Marijini su se roditelji s njom i njezina dva brata preselili iz svojeg doma u vinogradu u seoce na kraju puta, Lorcu. Nalazilo se sedam kilometara od grada Visa, a u njemu je živjelo samo dvadesetak ljudi. Zbog te je udaljenosti seoce bilo izdvojeno i nepovezano s glavninom populacije. A kad je nakon Prvog svjetskog rata španjolska gripa poharala svijet, pokazalo se da je obitelj nenamjerno pronašla utočište.
Na otoku su postojale 22 crkve i svaka je imala zvono.
– Neprestano su zvonila – kaže Marija Ruljancich za australski list.
Kad bi zvono zazvonilo negdje bliže, obznanjujući nečiju smrt, njezin je stric Toni trčao unaokolo govoreći članovima obitelji da zatvore svaki prozor. Bio je to, kaže Marija, preporučeni lijek za svakoga na Visu – zatvorite prozore. Malo je tko od tadašnjih deset tisuća stanovnika otoka znao kako se virus širi. Malena Lorca bila je pošteđena zbog svoje izoliranosti, nitko nije dolazio u posjet, nitko nije nikamo išao i izlagao se opasnosti.
Mariji je pomoglo i to što se u školu polazilo sa sedam godina, ona je 1920. bila u toj dobi, a do tada je španjolska gripa prohujala.
– Hodala sam do škole svaki dan osam kilometara i isto toliko natrag – prisjeća se Marija.
No, povijesna previranja donijela su nove izazove, otok Vis, prije dio Austro-Ugarskog Carstva, okupirala je Italija, djeca su morala učiti i govoriti talijanski, ali su u znak prosvjeda odbijali jesti tjesteninu, u kojoj Marija danas uživa. Potom je Vis postao dio Kraljevine SHS, a nove probleme donio je Drugi svjetski rat.
U dobi od 19 godina Marija se udala za Ivana Ruljancicha, koji se vratio na Vis nakon šest godina provedenih u Zapadnoj Australiji, gdje je radio kao drvosječa. Vis su ponovno okupirali Talijani, ali bio je pošteđen njemačke okupacije, a nakon kapitulacije Italije, britanske i jugoslavenske snage pretvorile su otok u svoju utvrđenu bazu.
Kad su se borbe s njemačkim snagama intenzivirale, Britanci su 1943. godine odlučili tisuće stanovnika otoka poslati u izbjeglički kamp u Egiptu. Marija i Ivan su s dvoje male djece, Johnom i Dinah, koji su, kao i njihov otac, u međuvremenu preminuli, bili među onima koji su poslani u izbjeglištvo.
Nakon završetka rata, 1946. godine, mala obitelj odlučila je otići u Australiju, a treće dijete – poslije osnivač melbourneske oralne i maksilofacijalne poliklinike dr. Kevin Ruljancich – rođeno je 1949. godine. Danas, s iskustvima dva svjetska rata i dvije katastrofalne pandemije, pakla izbjegličkog kampa i putovanja na drugu stranu svijetu, Marija je među rijetkim osobama na svijetu koje su preživjele sve te strahote.
– Možemo to zahvaliti društvenoj izoliranosti – kaže njezin sin Kevin, koji često dolazi na Vis, gdje obitelj još uvijek posjeduje dvije stare kuće u kojima su njegovi roditelji odrasli prije više od jednog stoljeća, zaključuje list "The Sydney Morning Herald".

Marija Ruljancich u subotu je proslavila 107. rođendan. Ona je živi svjedok blagoslova društvene izolacije tijekom pandemije, ali ne u ovom današnjem vremenu koronavirusa, njezina priča o preživljavanju stara je cijelo stoljeće.
Marijinom životnom pričom ovih se dana bavio dnevni list "The Sydney Morning Herald", a njezina duboka starost znači da je Marija jedna od rijetkih osoba koje još pamte pandemiju španjolske gripe 1918./19. godine, koja je ubila desetke milijuna ljudi. Premda je bila dijete, rođena je 1913. godine, sjeća se neprekidne udaljene zvonjave crkvenih zvona koja su označavala smrt brojnih stanovnika njezina rodnog otoka Visa.
Ali ni ona, ni bilo tko od njezine obitelji i nekolicine susjeda u seocetu Lorca nije se zarazio virusom gripe, njihova sreća bila je nenamjerna izolacija. U godinama prije pandemije španjolske gripe bolest poznata kao filoksera napala je obiteljski vinograd i uništila stare nasade vinove loze koji su obitelji omogućavali pristojan život.
Ostavši bez prihoda, Marijini su se roditelji s njom i njezina dva brata preselili iz svojeg doma u vinogradu u seoce na kraju puta, Lorcu. Nalazilo se sedam kilometara od grada Visa, a u njemu je živjelo samo dvadesetak ljudi. Zbog te je udaljenosti seoce bilo izdvojeno i nepovezano s glavninom populacije. A kad je nakon Prvog svjetskog rata španjolska gripa poharala svijet, pokazalo se da je obitelj nenamjerno pronašla utočište.
Na otoku su postojale 22 crkve i svaka je imala zvono.
– Neprestano su zvonila – kaže Marija Ruljancich za australski list.
Kad bi zvono zazvonilo negdje bliže, obznanjujući nečiju smrt, njezin je stric Toni trčao unaokolo govoreći članovima obitelji da zatvore svaki prozor. Bio je to, kaže Marija, preporučeni lijek za svakoga na Visu – zatvorite prozore. Malo je tko od tadašnjih deset tisuća stanovnika otoka znao kako se virus širi. Malena Lorca bila je pošteđena zbog svoje izoliranosti, nitko nije dolazio u posjet, nitko nije nikamo išao i izlagao se opasnosti.
Mariji je pomoglo i to što se u školu polazilo sa sedam godina, ona je 1920. bila u toj dobi, a do tada je španjolska gripa prohujala.
– Hodala sam do škole svaki dan osam kilometara i isto toliko natrag – prisjeća se Marija.
No, povijesna previranja donijela su nove izazove, otok Vis, prije dio Austro-Ugarskog Carstva, okupirala je Italija, djeca su morala učiti i govoriti talijanski, ali su u znak prosvjeda odbijali jesti tjesteninu, u kojoj Marija danas uživa. Potom je Vis postao dio Kraljevine SHS, a nove probleme donio je Drugi svjetski rat.
U dobi od 19 godina Marija se udala za Ivana Ruljancicha, koji se vratio na Vis nakon šest godina provedenih u Zapadnoj Australiji, gdje je radio kao drvosječa. Vis su ponovno okupirali Talijani, ali bio je pošteđen njemačke okupacije, a nakon kapitulacije Italije, britanske i jugoslavenske snage pretvorile su otok u svoju utvrđenu bazu.
Kad su se borbe s njemačkim snagama intenzivirale, Britanci su 1943. godine odlučili tisuće stanovnika otoka poslati u izbjeglički kamp u Egiptu. Marija i Ivan su s dvoje male djece, Johnom i Dinah, koji su, kao i njihov otac, u međuvremenu preminuli, bili među onima koji su poslani u izbjeglištvo.
Nakon završetka rata, 1946. godine, mala obitelj odlučila je otići u Australiju, a treće dijete – poslije osnivač melbourneske oralne i maksilofacijalne poliklinike dr. Kevin Ruljancich – rođeno je 1949. godine. Danas, s iskustvima dva svjetska rata i dvije katastrofalne pandemije, pakla izbjegličkog kampa i putovanja na drugu stranu svijetu, Marija je među rijetkim osobama na svijetu koje su preživjele sve te strahote.
– Možemo to zahvaliti društvenoj izoliranosti – kaže njezin sin Kevin, koji često dolazi na Vis, gdje obitelj još uvijek posjeduje dvije stare kuće u kojima su njegovi roditelji odrasli prije više od jednog stoljeća, zaključuje list "The Sydney Morning Herald".
