Vegetarijanci imaju otprilike dvostruko više depresivnih epizoda od onih koji jedu meso, pokazalo je novo istraživanje.
Studija temeljena na podacima ankete iz Brazila poklapa se s ranijim istraživanjima, koja su otkrila veće stope depresije među onima koji se odriču mesa.
Prvi faktor uzrokuje drugi u obliku nekog nutritivnog nedostatka, piše The conversation.
Nova analiza, objavljena u Journal of Affective Disorders, uzela je u obzir širok raspon prehrambenih čimbenika, uključujući ukupni unos kalorija, unos proteina, unos mikronutrijenata i razinu prerade hrane.
To sugerira da veće stope depresije među vegetarijancima nisu uzrokovane nutritivnim sadržajem njihove prehrane.
Dakle, što bi moglo objasniti vezu između vegetarijanstva i depresije? Postoji li neki nenutritivni mehanizam koji tjera prvo da je uzrok drugome? Ili se odnos svodi na nešto sasvim treće?
Prvo, moguće je da depresija uzrokuje veću vjerojatnost da će ljudi postati vegetarijanci nego obrnuto. Simptomi depresije mogu uključivati razmišljanje o negativnim mislima, kao i osjećaj krivnje.
Osjećaju se krivima
Pod pretpostavkom da će se depresivni i nedepresivni ljudi jednako susresti s uznemirujućom istinom o klaonicama i uzgoju, moguće je da će depresivni ljudi više razmišljati o tim stvarima i vjerojatnije je da će se osjećati krivima za svoju ulogu u stvaranju potražnje za mesom.
Depresivni vegetarijanac, u ovom slučaju, ne griješi nužno kada ovako razmišlja. Iako se depresija ponekad karakterizira kao nerealno negativna percepcija, postoje dokazi koji upućuju na to da ljudi s blagom do umjerenom depresijom imaju realističnije prosudbe o ishodu neizvjesnih događaja i realističnije percepcije vlastite uloge i sposobnosti.
Jer, doista postoji okrutno postupanje prema životinjama u proizvodnji mesa.
Drugo, moguće je da pridržavanje vegetarijanske prehrane uzrokuje depresiju iz drugih razloga, a ne zbog prehrane.
Čak i ako vegetarijanskoj prehrani ne nedostaje "sretnih nutrijenata", moglo bi biti da odricanje od mesa uzrokuje depresiju na druge načine.
Društvo i zadirkivanje
Na primjer, prihvaćanje vegetarijanske prehrane može utjecati na nečiji odnos s drugima i uključenost u društvene aktivnosti, a ponekad može biti povezano sa zadirkivanjem ili drugim oblicima društvenog ostracizma.
Naime, nova se studija temelji na anketnim podacima prikupljenim u Brazilu, zemlji poznatoj po mesnoj prehrani.
Neki podaci iz istraživanja ukazali su na nagli porast vegetarijanstva u Brazilu posljednjih godina, s 8 posto u 2012. na 16 posto u 2018.
Međutim, u nedavnoj anketi na ovu temu, među više od 14 tisuća Brazilaca bilo je samo 82 vegetarijanca – jedva više od pola posto.
Treba se zapitati bi li ista veza između vegetarijanstva i depresije bila uočena u Indiji ili drugim zemljama, gdje je vegetarijanstvo češća društvena norma?
Još važnije, kako se stopa vegetarijanstva povećava u razvijenim zemljama, hoćemo li vidjeti da ta poveznica s vremenom nestaje?
Žene su sklonije
Naposljetku, moguće je da niti vegetarijanstvo niti depresija ne uzrokuju jedno drugo, nego su oboje povezani s nekim trećim faktorom. To može biti bilo koji broj karakteristika ili iskustava koji su povezani i s vegetarijanstvom i s depresijom.
Na primjer, žene su sklonije vegetarijanstvu i depresiji nego muškarci. Međutim, brazilska studija je uzela u obzir spol, isključujući ovu treću varijablu.
Jedna varijabla u ovoj studiji nije ispitana, ali je vjerojatno povezana s vegetarijanstvom i depresijom. To je izloženost nasilnim slikama mesne industrije. Sprječavanje okrutnosti prema životinjama je najčešće citirani razlog koji vegetarijanci navode za izbjegavanje mesa.
Vegetarijansko društveno iskustvo može pridonijeti depresiji, depresija može uzrokovati povećanu vjerojatnost da se postane vegetarijanac, ili i vegetarijanstvo i depresija mogu biti uzrokovani trećom varijablom, kao što je izloženost nasilnim slikama mesne industrije.

Vegetarijanci imaju otprilike dvostruko više depresivnih epizoda od onih koji jedu meso, pokazalo je novo istraživanje.
Studija temeljena na podacima ankete iz Brazila poklapa se s ranijim istraživanjima, koja su otkrila veće stope depresije među onima koji se odriču mesa.
Prvi faktor uzrokuje drugi u obliku nekog nutritivnog nedostatka, piše The conversation.
Nova analiza, objavljena u Journal of Affective Disorders, uzela je u obzir širok raspon prehrambenih čimbenika, uključujući ukupni unos kalorija, unos proteina, unos mikronutrijenata i razinu prerade hrane.
To sugerira da veće stope depresije među vegetarijancima nisu uzrokovane nutritivnim sadržajem njihove prehrane.
Dakle, što bi moglo objasniti vezu između vegetarijanstva i depresije? Postoji li neki nenutritivni mehanizam koji tjera prvo da je uzrok drugome? Ili se odnos svodi na nešto sasvim treće?
Prvo, moguće je da depresija uzrokuje veću vjerojatnost da će ljudi postati vegetarijanci nego obrnuto. Simptomi depresije mogu uključivati razmišljanje o negativnim mislima, kao i osjećaj krivnje.
Osjećaju se krivima
Pod pretpostavkom da će se depresivni i nedepresivni ljudi jednako susresti s uznemirujućom istinom o klaonicama i uzgoju, moguće je da će depresivni ljudi više razmišljati o tim stvarima i vjerojatnije je da će se osjećati krivima za svoju ulogu u stvaranju potražnje za mesom.
Depresivni vegetarijanac, u ovom slučaju, ne griješi nužno kada ovako razmišlja. Iako se depresija ponekad karakterizira kao nerealno negativna percepcija, postoje dokazi koji upućuju na to da ljudi s blagom do umjerenom depresijom imaju realističnije prosudbe o ishodu neizvjesnih događaja i realističnije percepcije vlastite uloge i sposobnosti.
Jer, doista postoji okrutno postupanje prema životinjama u proizvodnji mesa.
Drugo, moguće je da pridržavanje vegetarijanske prehrane uzrokuje depresiju iz drugih razloga, a ne zbog prehrane.
Čak i ako vegetarijanskoj prehrani ne nedostaje "sretnih nutrijenata", moglo bi biti da odricanje od mesa uzrokuje depresiju na druge načine.
Društvo i zadirkivanje
Na primjer, prihvaćanje vegetarijanske prehrane može utjecati na nečiji odnos s drugima i uključenost u društvene aktivnosti, a ponekad može biti povezano sa zadirkivanjem ili drugim oblicima društvenog ostracizma.
Naime, nova se studija temelji na anketnim podacima prikupljenim u Brazilu, zemlji poznatoj po mesnoj prehrani.
Neki podaci iz istraživanja ukazali su na nagli porast vegetarijanstva u Brazilu posljednjih godina, s 8 posto u 2012. na 16 posto u 2018.
Međutim, u nedavnoj anketi na ovu temu, među više od 14 tisuća Brazilaca bilo je samo 82 vegetarijanca – jedva više od pola posto.
Treba se zapitati bi li ista veza između vegetarijanstva i depresije bila uočena u Indiji ili drugim zemljama, gdje je vegetarijanstvo češća društvena norma?
Još važnije, kako se stopa vegetarijanstva povećava u razvijenim zemljama, hoćemo li vidjeti da ta poveznica s vremenom nestaje?
Žene su sklonije
Naposljetku, moguće je da niti vegetarijanstvo niti depresija ne uzrokuju jedno drugo, nego su oboje povezani s nekim trećim faktorom. To može biti bilo koji broj karakteristika ili iskustava koji su povezani i s vegetarijanstvom i s depresijom.
Na primjer, žene su sklonije vegetarijanstvu i depresiji nego muškarci. Međutim, brazilska studija je uzela u obzir spol, isključujući ovu treću varijablu.
Jedna varijabla u ovoj studiji nije ispitana, ali je vjerojatno povezana s vegetarijanstvom i depresijom. To je izloženost nasilnim slikama mesne industrije. Sprječavanje okrutnosti prema životinjama je najčešće citirani razlog koji vegetarijanci navode za izbjegavanje mesa.
Vegetarijansko društveno iskustvo može pridonijeti depresiji, depresija može uzrokovati povećanu vjerojatnost da se postane vegetarijanac, ili i vegetarijanstvo i depresija mogu biti uzrokovani trećom varijablom, kao što je izloženost nasilnim slikama mesne industrije.
