Grejp, križanac limuna i naranče otkriven je u 18. stoljeću na Barbadosu, gdje je bio poznat kao "zabranjeno voće", dok se danas smatra nezamjenjivim izvorom vitamina i minerala koji blagotvorno djeluju na zdravlje. Iako je modernu kuhinju teško zamisliti bez limuna, budući da su i sok i kora dodatak mnogim pićima i jelima, limun je također nezamjenjiv u kućanstvu jer se njime mogu očistiti mrlje na metalu, srebru, mramoru, kao mrlje od hrđe. Osim kozmetičkih učinaka, limun je zasigurno najpoznatiji po visokom udjelu vitamina C koji ublažava prehladu, kašalj, glavobolju, grlobolju, reumu i temperaturu. Mnogi se u dijetama za mršavljenje kunu u grejp, iako taj učinak nikada nije dokazan. Teorija dijete koja se temelji na činjenici da grejp sadrži enzim koji pomaže sagorijevanju tjelesne masti nikada nije potvrđena. No, potreban je oprez kada svakodnevno konzumirate grejp ili njegov sok, jer u kombinaciji s određenim lijekovima može uzrokovati ozbiljne zdravstvene komplikacije ili čak smrt. Ako uzimate lijekove, najbolje je posavjetovati se s liječnikom ili ljekarnikom o tome smijete li konzumirati i grejp i njegov sok. Voće povećava razinu estrogena, hormona koji se povezuje s većim rizikom od ove bolesti, pisale su tada britanski časopisi. Kao i kod mnogih drugih, znanstvenici i drugi stručnjaci upozorili su da će biti potrebno više istraživanja kako bi se taj zaključak i potvrdio, slično mnogim drugim studijama koje se odnose na štetnu konzumaciju ove ili one hrane.

Očito je da trebamo naći pravu mjeru prilikom konzumiranja voća za koje vjerujemo da je izvor zdravlja. Bilo kakvo pretjerivanje može imati štetne posljedice, pa je tako i sa vitaminima.

Grejp, križanac limuna i naranče otkriven je u 18. stoljeću na Barbadosu, gdje je bio poznat kao "zabranjeno voće", dok se danas smatra nezamjenjivim izvorom vitamina i minerala koji blagotvorno djeluju na zdravlje. Iako je modernu kuhinju teško zamisliti bez limuna, budući da su i sok i kora dodatak mnogim pićima i jelima, limun je također nezamjenjiv u kućanstvu jer se njime mogu očistiti mrlje na metalu, srebru, mramoru, kao mrlje od hrđe. Osim kozmetičkih učinaka, limun je zasigurno najpoznatiji po visokom udjelu vitamina C koji ublažava prehladu, kašalj, glavobolju, grlobolju, reumu i temperaturu. Međutim, istraživači, koji su uvijek iznenađeni svojim nalazima u mnogim studijama, također su nedavno izvijestili da limun smanjuje arteriosklerozu, koja je vrlo česta bolest, a mnogima je poznata kao bolest koja uzrokuje zadebljanje stijenki krvnih žila. Jedan od najučinkovitijih kućnih lijekova za to je limunova kora, jer se kaže da sadrži tvari koje jačaju cijeli arterijski sustav.

Kada se još nije znalo što su vitamini i kako djeluju na zdravlje, koristila se ljekovitost limuna, a posebno se njegov sok smatrao učinkovitim lijekom protiv krvarenja otvorenih rana i za čišćenje gnojnih rana. Također se kaže da je nezamjenjiv u liječenju skorbuta. Sjetimo se samo starih filmova o pomorcima koji su se prije svakog putovanja opskrbili ovim voćem. Očito su znali zašto.

Grejpu se također pripisuju mnogi ljekoviti učinci. Jedan grejp trebao bi zadovoljiti dnevne potrebe odrasle osobe za vitaminom C, a ovaj je neraskidivo povezan s imunološkim sustavom. Hrana bogata vitaminom C može ublažiti simptome prehlade, a kao antioksidans, vitamin C također sprječava oštećenja uzrokovana slobodnim radikalima, upalna stanja kao što su astma, osteoartritis i reumatoidni artritis.

Mnogi se u dijetama za mršavljenje kunu u grejp, iako taj učinak nikada nije dokazan. Teorija dijete koja se temelji na činjenici da grejp sadrži enzim koji pomaže sagorijevanju tjelesne masti nikada nije potvrđena. No, potreban je oprez kada svakodnevno konzumirate grejp ili njegov sok, jer u kombinaciji s određenim lijekovima može uzrokovati ozbiljne zdravstvene komplikacije ili čak smrt. Ako uzimate lijekove, najbolje je posavjetovati se s liječnikom ili ljekarnikom o tome smijete li konzumirati i grejp i njegov sok. Također treba biti oprezan s lijekovima koji se izdaju bez recepta i biljnim lijekovima, jer također može doći do interakcije između grejpa i ovih lijekova. No, činjenicu da grejp može ometati djelovanje lijekova američki su istraživači otkrili slučajno, prije manje od dva desetljeća. Testirali su nuspojave alkohola i bili iznenađeni učinkom grejpa koji je prikrio alkoholni okus. Dakle, ako uzimate lijekove, bolje je odustati od grejpa ili njegovog soka, a još je bolje da se za savjet obratite svom liječniku ili ljekarniku.

Uz blagotvorne i pozitivne učinke na zdravlje, kojih nema malo, stručnjaci i istraživači uvijek otkriju nešto negativno o grejpu. Tako su prije dvije godine američki znanstvenici izvijestili da svakodnevna konzumacija grejpa povećava šanse za razvoj raka dojke. Studija koja je uključivala 50.000 starijih žena pokazala je da jedenje samo četvrtine grejpa dnevno povećava rizik za razvoj raka dojke za 30 posto. Voće povećava razinu estrogena, hormona koji se povezuje s većim rizikom od ove bolesti, pisale su tada britanski časopisi. Kao i kod mnogih drugih, znanstvenici i drugi stručnjaci upozorili su da će biti potrebno više istraživanja kako bi se taj zaključak i potvrdio, slično mnogim drugim studijama koje se odnose na štetnu konzumaciju ove ili one hrane.

Očito je da trebamo naći pravu mjeru prilikom konzumiranja voća za koje vjerujemo da je izvor zdravlja. Bilo kakvo pretjerivanje može imati štetne posljedice, pa je tako i sa vitaminima.
