Tilikum je bio najveća orka u zatočeništvu. Bio je dugačak čak 6,9 metara i težak oko 5.700 kilograma. Njegova bočna peraja bila je dugačka 2,1 metar, a leđna peraja od 2 metra bila je potpuno zakrivljena na lijevu stranu. Njegovo ime, u žargonu Chinooka na sjeverozapadu Pacifika, znači "prijatelji, odnosi, pleme, nacija, obični ljudi".

Tilikum je uhvaćen kada je imao samo dvije godine, zajedno s još dvije mlade orke u studenom 1983. na Islandu. Poslije skoro godinu dana provedenih u morskom zoološkom vrtu Hafnarfjordur, prebačen je u "Sealand" na otoku Vancouver, u Kanadi. U Sealandu je živio sa dvije starije ženke kitova ubojica po imenu Haida II i Nutka IV. Kao rezultat njihove matrijarhalne društvene strukture, Tilikuma su zlostavljale Haida II i Nutka IV koje su se prema njemu ponašale agresivno, zbog čega je dugo morao boraviti u manjem medicinskom bazenu gdje su ga treneri držali radi zaštite.

Dok su napadi orki na ljude u divljini rijetki i nije zabilježen nijedan sa smrtnim ishodom, do 2022. godine četiri čovjeka su umrla prilikom interakcije s orkama u zatočeništvu. Tilikum je sudjelovao u tri od tih smrti, piše Mondo.

U veljači 1991. Keltie Byrne, 21-godišnja studentica morske biologije i natjecateljska plivačica, dok je radila kao honorarni trener u vodenom zabavnom parku, okliznula se i pala u bazen u kojem su bili Tilikum, Haida II i Nutka IV. Tri orke su je potopile i vukle po bazenu, ne dopuštajući joj da izroni. U jednom trenutku je stigla do ruba i pokušala se popeti, ali su je orke povukle nazad u bazen. Drugi treneri su joj bacili pojas za spašavanje, ali su je životinje držale podalje od njega, ignorirajući trenerove komande za opoziv. Izronila je tri puta prije nego što se utopila, a prošlo je nekoliko sati prije nego što je njeno tijelo bilo izvučeno iz bazena.

Udario i na trenericu

Tilikum je premješten u Seaworld Orlando 9. siječnja 1992. godine, dok je prethodni ubrzo zatvoren.

Sedam godina poslije, 6. srpnja 1999. godine, 27-godišnji muškarac, Daniel P. Dukes, pronađen je mrtav preko Tilikumovih leđa u njegovom bazenu za spavanje. Dukes je prethodnog dana posjetio Seaworld, ali je ostao nakon zatvaranja parka i izbjegao osiguranje kako bi ušao u bazen bez odjeće. Obdukcijom su pronađene brojne rane, kontuzije i ogrebotine koje su prekrivale njegovo tijelo, a genitalije su mu odgrizene. Sve je navodno prouzrokovao Tilikum. Usprkos brojnim kamerama oko bazena i unutar njega koje bi trebale pratiti dobrobit orka, Seaworld tvrdi da događaj nije snimljen. Obdukcija je zaključila da je Dukesov uzrok smrti davljenje, a u njegovom sistemu nisu pronađeni tragovi lijekova ili alkohola.

Posljednje Tilikumovo ubojstvo posebno je potreslo svijet jer je tog 24. veljače 2010. godine žrtva bila Dawn Brancheau (40), njegova trenerica koja je uz njega bila prethodnih 16 godina. Šou samo što se završio i Dawn je kao dio rutine trljala Tilikuma i hranila ga, kada ju je on u jednom trenutku zgrabio za konjski rep i povukao u vodu. Neki svjedoci su izjavili da su vidjeli kako je Tilikum zgrabio Brancheau za ruku ili rame. Navodno ju je skalpirao, a zatim joj je odgrizao ruku i progutao je tijekom napada. Obdukcija Brancheau je ukazala na smrt od utapanja i traume zbog ozljeda, a njen skalp su poslije našli ronioci na dnu bazena.

Pojedini očevici su istaknuli kako su vidjeli da ju je Tilikum agresivno vukao na dno bazena i da je prilikom njenog pokušaja da ispliva na površinu, kit ubojica pojurio ka njoj i svom snagom je udario vrhom "kljuna" u grudi, pa je opet ščepao. Kasnije su pojedini treneri govorili da je Tilikum bio "posesivan kit ubojica" i da je bilo skoro nemoguće natjerati ga da nešto ispusti iz usta što je uzeo.

Zabranjena snimka ubojstva

Svi napori kolega da spase Dawn nisu uspjeli jer se Tilikum nije oglašavao na njihove uobičajene komande. Kasnije je otkriveno i da joj navodno vrat bio slomljen, a jedan turist je snimio njene posljednje trenutke prije nego što ju je Tilikum zgrabio, dok je snimka napada i smrti sudski zabranjena za javnost.

Tilikum se vratio nastupima 30. ožujka 2011. Za masažu su korištena crijeva za vodu pod visokim pritiskom, a ne ruke, a na platformama su korištene uklonjive zaštitne ograde, jer je ograničen bliski kontakt između orki i trenera i pojačane su sigurnosne mjere na radnom mjestu nakon Dawnine smrti.

I s Tilikumom se ovako moglo do zadnjeg slučaja

Seaworld je u ožujku 2016. objavio da se Tilikumovo zdravlje pogoršava i da se mislilo kako ima infekciju pluća zbog bakterijske upale. U svibnju 2016. objavljeno je da se Tilikumovo zdravlje popravlja. Seaworld je 6. siječnja 2017. objavio da je Tilikum umro rano ujutro. Uzrok smrti je prijavljen kao bakterijska infekcija. Tilikum je dobio 21 potomka u zatočeništvu, od kojih je devet bilo živo do sredine 2021. godine, a prvi je kit ubojica u zatočeništvu koji je doživio da ima i unuke.

Agresija koju je Tilikum pokazao nije usamljeni slučaj i među drugim kitovima ubojicama, delfinima i drugim životinjama. Nebrojene peticije i apeli su upućivani zabavnim parkovima da se prekine s okrutnom praksom držanja životinja u malim prostorima, ili u ovom slučaju, bazenima. Vjeruje se da je upravo zbog toga agresija pojačana kod pojedinih orki koje su u zatočeništvu, a prijavljivani su i slučajevi samoozljeđivanja ili brutalnih napada orki među sobom, piše Mondo.

Tilikum je bio najveća orka u zatočeništvu. Bio je dugačak čak 6,9 metara i težak oko 5.700 kilograma. Njegova bočna peraja bila je dugačka 2,1 metar, a leđna peraja od 2 metra bila je potpuno zakrivljena na lijevu stranu. Njegovo ime, u žargonu Chinooka na sjeverozapadu Pacifika, znači "prijatelji, odnosi, pleme, nacija, obični ljudi".

Tilikum je uhvaćen kada je imao samo dvije godine, zajedno s još dvije mlade orke u studenom 1983. na Islandu. Poslije skoro godinu dana provedenih u morskom zoološkom vrtu Hafnarfjordur, prebačen je u "Sealand" na otoku Vancouver, u Kanadi. U Sealandu je živio sa dvije starije ženke kitova ubojica po imenu Haida II i Nutka IV. Kao rezultat njihove matrijarhalne društvene strukture, Tilikuma su zlostavljale Haida II i Nutka IV koje su se prema njemu ponašale agresivno, zbog čega je dugo morao boraviti u manjem medicinskom bazenu gdje su ga treneri držali radi zaštite.

Dok su napadi orki na ljude u divljini rijetki i nije zabilježen nijedan sa smrtnim ishodom, do 2022. godine četiri čovjeka su umrla prilikom interakcije s orkama u zatočeništvu. Tilikum je sudjelovao u tri od tih smrti, piše Mondo.

U veljači 1991. Keltie Byrne, 21-godišnja studentica morske biologije i natjecateljska plivačica, dok je radila kao honorarni trener u vodenom zabavnom parku, okliznula se i pala u bazen u kojem su bili Tilikum, Haida II i Nutka IV. Tri orke su je potopile i vukle po bazenu, ne dopuštajući joj da izroni. U jednom trenutku je stigla do ruba i pokušala se popeti, ali su je orke povukle nazad u bazen. Drugi treneri su joj bacili pojas za spašavanje, ali su je životinje držale podalje od njega, ignorirajući trenerove komande za opoziv. Izronila je tri puta prije nego što se utopila, a prošlo je nekoliko sati prije nego što je njeno tijelo bilo izvučeno iz bazena.

Udario i na trenericu

Tilikum je premješten u Seaworld Orlando 9. siječnja 1992. godine, dok je prethodni ubrzo zatvoren.

Sedam godina poslije, 6. srpnja 1999. godine, 27-godišnji muškarac, Daniel P. Dukes, pronađen je mrtav preko Tilikumovih leđa u njegovom bazenu za spavanje. Dukes je prethodnog dana posjetio Seaworld, ali je ostao nakon zatvaranja parka i izbjegao osiguranje kako bi ušao u bazen bez odjeće. Obdukcijom su pronađene brojne rane, kontuzije i ogrebotine koje su prekrivale njegovo tijelo, a genitalije su mu odgrizene. Sve je navodno prouzrokovao Tilikum. Usprkos brojnim kamerama oko bazena i unutar njega koje bi trebale pratiti dobrobit orka, Seaworld tvrdi da događaj nije snimljen. Obdukcija je zaključila da je Dukesov uzrok smrti davljenje, a u njegovom sistemu nisu pronađeni tragovi lijekova ili alkohola.

Posljednje Tilikumovo ubojstvo posebno je potreslo svijet jer je tog 24. veljače 2010. godine žrtva bila Dawn Brancheau (40), njegova trenerica koja je uz njega bila prethodnih 16 godina. Šou samo što se završio i Dawn je kao dio rutine trljala Tilikuma i hranila ga, kada ju je on u jednom trenutku zgrabio za konjski rep i povukao u vodu. Neki svjedoci su izjavili da su vidjeli kako je Tilikum zgrabio Brancheau za ruku ili rame. Navodno ju je skalpirao, a zatim joj je odgrizao ruku i progutao je tijekom napada. Obdukcija Brancheau je ukazala na smrt od utapanja i traume zbog ozljeda, a njen skalp su poslije našli ronioci na dnu bazena.

Pojedini očevici su istaknuli kako su vidjeli da ju je Tilikum agresivno vukao na dno bazena i da je prilikom njenog pokušaja da ispliva na površinu, kit ubojica pojurio ka njoj i svom snagom je udario vrhom "kljuna" u grudi, pa je opet ščepao. Kasnije su pojedini treneri govorili da je Tilikum bio "posesivan kit ubojica" i da je bilo skoro nemoguće natjerati ga da nešto ispusti iz usta što je uzeo.

Zabranjena snimka ubojstva

Svi napori kolega da spase Dawn nisu uspjeli jer se Tilikum nije oglašavao na njihove uobičajene komande. Kasnije je otkriveno i da joj navodno vrat bio slomljen, a jedan turist je snimio njene posljednje trenutke prije nego što ju je Tilikum zgrabio, dok je snimka napada i smrti sudski zabranjena za javnost.

Tilikum se vratio nastupima 30. ožujka 2011. Za masažu su korištena crijeva za vodu pod visokim pritiskom, a ne ruke, a na platformama su korištene uklonjive zaštitne ograde, jer je ograničen bliski kontakt između orki i trenera i pojačane su sigurnosne mjere na radnom mjestu nakon Dawnine smrti.

Seaworld je u ožujku 2016. objavio da se Tilikumovo zdravlje pogoršava i da se mislilo kako ima infekciju pluća zbog bakterijske upale. U svibnju 2016. objavljeno je da se Tilikumovo zdravlje popravlja. Seaworld je 6. siječnja 2017. objavio da je Tilikum umro rano ujutro. Uzrok smrti je prijavljen kao bakterijska infekcija. Tilikum je dobio 21 potomka u zatočeništvu, od kojih je devet bilo živo do sredine 2021. godine, a prvi je kit ubojica u zatočeništvu koji je doživio da ima i unuke.

Agresija koju je Tilikum pokazao nije usamljeni slučaj i među drugim kitovima ubojicama, delfinima i drugim životinjama. Nebrojene peticije i apeli su upućivani zabavnim parkovima da se prekine s okrutnom praksom držanja životinja u malim prostorima, ili u ovom slučaju, bazenima. Vjeruje se da je upravo zbog toga agresija pojačana kod pojedinih orki koje su u zatočeništvu, a prijavljivani su i slučajevi samoozljeđivanja ili brutalnih napada orki među sobom, piše Mondo.
