Barkod – pravokutni niz paralelnih linija i ujedno najrašireniji alat za praćenje proizvoda diljem svijeta – slavi svoj 50. rođendan. Milijarde predmeta svaki se dan skeniraju u raznim industrijama: aviokompanijama, ljekarnama, kinima, dućanima najraznovrsnije namjere, ... Izum, bez kojeg bi naš današnji jednostavni i brzi način funkcioniranja bio nezamisliv, omogućio je trgovcima da budu učinkovitiji pa sada gotovo da nema proizvoda koji nema barkod, piše Jutarnji list.

No u početku nisu svi podržavali njegovu primjenu - trgovci mješovitom robom u početku su se protivili univerzalnom sustavu, dok se dijelu proizvođača nije sviđala ideja da "žigošu" svoje proizvode. Brzina i praktičnost na kraju su pobijedile pa se i pola stoljeća nakon vodi rasprava kome pripisati zasluge za ovaj revolucionarni izum.

Tijekom prosperitetnog razdoblja nakon Drugog svjetskih rata došlo je do brzog razvoja novih potrošačkih proizvoda pa se i broj stvari ‘potrebnih‘ svakom kućanstvu silno povećao. S druge strane, Amerikanci više nisu željeli čekati u dugom redovima na blagajni pa se 1940-ih počelo razmišljati o sustavu za ubrzanje supermarketa.

Bernard Silver i Norman Joseph Woodland, studenti Sveučilišta Drexel u Philadelphiji, 1952. godine su patentirali svoj rani sustav barkoda. Tadašnji uzorak bio je inspiriran Morseovom abecedom koju je Woodland naučio u izviđačima. Prema pisanju Daily Maila, inspiracija mu je došla spontano dok je u siječnju 1949. godine ležao na suncu na plaži u Miamiju. Spontano je vukao prste kroz pijesak i slučajno stvorio uzorak s nizom okomitih linija – tri debele i jedne tanke. Tada mu je na pamet palo Morseovo slovo ‘J‘ (ujedno njegov inicijal) koje se sastoji od tri crtice i točke.

Budući da je ujedno bio i briljantan znanstvenik, shvatio je da bi njegova ideja mogla pomoći američkim supermarketima koji su u to vrijeme gubili puno vremena na metode popisivanja zaliha. Metode nastale u 19. stoljeću nisu mogle odgovoriti na potrebe generacije koja je doživjela "potrošački boom".

Nastao je barkod, ali još je trebalo izumiti i stroj koji ga uopće može očitati. U potrazi za rješenjem Woodland se okrenuo filmskoj tehnologiji i naposljetku iskoristio stroj koji je nastao 1920-ih kako bi donio zvuk u kino. On je, naime, funkcionirao tako da bi aparat jarko svijetlo uspjelo kroz proreze u celuloidnom kolutu koje je zatim elektronički pretvoreno u zvučne valove. Woodland je shvatio da svjetlost ne mora nužno proći kroz proreze nego se može odraziti na senzor. Upravo na tom principu očitavanje barkoda funkcionira i danas - laserska zraka odbija se u barkod čitač. Trebalo je još samo pričekati razvoj lasera da bi ideja u potpunosti zaživjela.

Woodlandova preteča barkoda izgledala je drugačije od današnjeg jer su linije bile raspoređene u koncentrične krugove. Ipak, kružni kod pokazao se samo djelomično uspješnim jer bi se, ako bi pisač pri tiskanju pomaknuo ili je ambalaža bila udubljena, tinta zamutila i uzorak postao nečitljiv. Zbog toga se Woodland vratio svojoj izvornoj ideji – linijama u pijesku, a nastavio ju je razvijati u IBM-u.

Rođendan bar koda se obilježava upravo 3. travnja jer je na taj dan IBM-ova verzija odobrena kao industrijski standard. Dok je prema jednima upravo Woodland zaslužan za to, drugi izvori navode kako je barkod, kakvog danas poznajemo, kreirao inženjer George Laurer. Sigurno je pak to da je prvi proizvod s barkodom skeniran je na blagajni Marshovog supermarketa u blizini grada Troya. Bila je to vrećica s deset pakiranja žvakaćih guma Wrigley‘s Juicy Fruit koje su kupljene po tadašnjoj cijeni od 1.39 dolara.

Barkod – pravokutni niz paralelnih linija i ujedno najrašireniji alat za praćenje proizvoda diljem svijeta – slavi svoj 50. rođendan. Milijarde predmeta svaki se dan skeniraju u raznim industrijama: aviokompanijama, ljekarnama, kinima, dućanima najraznovrsnije namjere, ... Izum, bez kojeg bi naš današnji jednostavni i brzi način funkcioniranja bio nezamisliv, omogućio je trgovcima da budu učinkovitiji pa sada gotovo da nema proizvoda koji nema barkod, piše Jutarnji list.

No u početku nisu svi podržavali njegovu primjenu - trgovci mješovitom robom u početku su se protivili univerzalnom sustavu, dok se dijelu proizvođača nije sviđala ideja da "žigošu" svoje proizvode. Brzina i praktičnost na kraju su pobijedile pa se i pola stoljeća nakon vodi rasprava kome pripisati zasluge za ovaj revolucionarni izum.

Tijekom prosperitetnog razdoblja nakon Drugog svjetskih rata došlo je do brzog razvoja novih potrošačkih proizvoda pa se i broj stvari ‘potrebnih‘ svakom kućanstvu silno povećao. S druge strane, Amerikanci više nisu željeli čekati u dugom redovima na blagajni pa se 1940-ih počelo razmišljati o sustavu za ubrzanje supermarketa.

Bernard Silver i Norman Joseph Woodland, studenti Sveučilišta Drexel u Philadelphiji, 1952. godine su patentirali svoj rani sustav barkoda. Tadašnji uzorak bio je inspiriran Morseovom abecedom koju je Woodland naučio u izviđačima. Prema pisanju Daily Maila, inspiracija mu je došla spontano dok je u siječnju 1949. godine ležao na suncu na plaži u Miamiju. Spontano je vukao prste kroz pijesak i slučajno stvorio uzorak s nizom okomitih linija – tri debele i jedne tanke. Tada mu je na pamet palo Morseovo slovo ‘J‘ (ujedno njegov inicijal) koje se sastoji od tri crtice i točke.

Budući da je ujedno bio i briljantan znanstvenik, shvatio je da bi njegova ideja mogla pomoći američkim supermarketima koji su u to vrijeme gubili puno vremena na metode popisivanja zaliha. Metode nastale u 19. stoljeću nisu mogle odgovoriti na potrebe generacije koja je doživjela "potrošački boom".

Nastao je barkod, ali još je trebalo izumiti i stroj koji ga uopće može očitati. U potrazi za rješenjem Woodland se okrenuo filmskoj tehnologiji i naposljetku iskoristio stroj koji je nastao 1920-ih kako bi donio zvuk u kino. On je, naime, funkcionirao tako da bi aparat jarko svijetlo uspjelo kroz proreze u celuloidnom kolutu koje je zatim elektronički pretvoreno u zvučne valove. Woodland je shvatio da svjetlost ne mora nužno proći kroz proreze nego se može odraziti na senzor. Upravo na tom principu očitavanje barkoda funkcionira i danas - laserska zraka odbija se u barkod čitač. Trebalo je još samo pričekati razvoj lasera da bi ideja u potpunosti zaživjela.

Woodlandova preteča barkoda izgledala je drugačije od današnjeg jer su linije bile raspoređene u koncentrične krugove. Ipak, kružni kod pokazao se samo djelomično uspješnim jer bi se, ako bi pisač pri tiskanju pomaknuo ili je ambalaža bila udubljena, tinta zamutila i uzorak postao nečitljiv. Zbog toga se Woodland vratio svojoj izvornoj ideji – linijama u pijesku, a nastavio ju je razvijati u IBM-u.

Rođendan bar koda se obilježava upravo 3. travnja jer je na taj dan IBM-ova verzija odobrena kao industrijski standard. Dok je prema jednima upravo Woodland zaslužan za to, drugi izvori navode kako je barkod, kakvog danas poznajemo, kreirao inženjer George Laurer. Sigurno je pak to da je prvi proizvod s barkodom skeniran je na blagajni Marshovog supermarketa u blizini grada Troya. Bila je to vrećica s deset pakiranja žvakaćih guma Wrigley‘s Juicy Fruit koje su kupljene po tadašnjoj cijeni od 1.39 dolara.

Barkod – pravokutni niz paralelnih linija i ujedno najrašireniji alat za praćenje proizvoda diljem svijeta – slavi svoj 50. rođendan. Milijarde predmeta svaki se dan skeniraju u raznim industrijama: aviokompanijama, ljekarnama, kinima, dućanima najraznovrsnije namjere, ... Izum, bez kojeg bi naš današnji jednostavni i brzi način funkcioniranja bio nezamisliv, omogućio je trgovcima da budu učinkovitiji pa sada gotovo da nema proizvoda koji nema barkod, piše Jutarnji list.

No u početku nisu svi podržavali njegovu primjenu - trgovci mješovitom robom u početku su se protivili univerzalnom sustavu, dok se dijelu proizvođača nije sviđala ideja da "žigošu" svoje proizvode. Brzina i praktičnost na kraju su pobijedile pa se i pola stoljeća nakon vodi rasprava kome pripisati zasluge...
