CIA nikada nije previše držala do Bertolta Brechta, ali je, izgleda, visoko cijenila njegovu slavnu misao "Knjiga je oružje, uzmi je u ruke". U jeku hladnoga rata, dok su dva nepomirljiva bloka gomilala nuklearne bombe, američki špijuni, odnosno barem jedan odjel Središnje obavještajne agencije, naoružavao se librima trudeći se izvesti ih s onu stranu željezne zavjese. Uglavnom se radilo o djelima ruskih pisaca koja su kod kuće bila zabranjena, ali su u rukopisnoj formi prošvercana na zapad. CIA bi ih potom vraćala u domovinu, čvrsto uvjerena da će sovjetski građani, jednom kad se suoče s oporbenim glasovima svojih darovitih zemljaka, shvatiti u kakvoj satrapiji žive te da će poželjeti temeljite društvene promjene.

Potankosti o toj vrsti literarne kontrabande koja je cvala pedesetih godina dvadesetog stoljeća, dospjele su u javnost nakon što je CIA deklasificirala dio svog arhiva. Ta obimna građa postala je sirovinom za cijeli niz publicističkih naslova koji su pokušali rekonstruirati neke markantne, a dugo vremena zatajene epizode iz špijunskoga rata. Najslavnija od svih operacija, ona kojom je "Doktor Živago" Borisa Pasternaka prošvercan natrag u Sovjetski Savez, nadahnula je Teksašanku Laru Prescott na pisanje romanesknog debija pod naslovom "Čuvarice tajni".

Ona kao da je bila predestinirana da se uhvati u koštac s tom pričom, jer su je roditelji krstili imenom neutješne ljubavi Jurija Andrejeviča Živaga. Jednom kad se upoznala s grubim konturama priče (grubim utoliko što su mnoga imena i drugi škakljivi detalji iz starih dokumenata ostali zacrnjeni i nakon deklasifikacije spisa) poželjela je popuniti praznine osloncem na vlastitu maštu, iz čega je nastao libar koji se vrlo brzo pretvorio u globalnu uspješnicu. Prava na njegovo izdavanje prodana su u tridesetak zemalja, a Ink Factory i Marc Platt Productions rade na televizijskoj adaptaciji knjige.

'NARATIVNI RAZVODNICI'

Pa vrijedi li roman tolike strke i jagme? Najkraće rečeno: da, ali ne. Čvrsto sam uvjeren da nitko neće odustati od njegova čitanja, a još čvršće da će svi kad sklope posljednju stranicu osjećati manje ili veće (premda se kladim na potonju opciju) razočaranje. Naime, ovome romanu ništa ne fali, ali je puno toga čisti višak. Za početak, lijepo je kad se autorica odluči izmjenjivati pripovjedne perspektive, pa se vješto šalta iz jednoga u drugi glas. Problem, međutim, može nastati kad se ti glasovi namnože u tolikome broju da škode preglednosti, tečnosti i dinamici pripovijedanja. Osobito kad jedan od glasova pripada množini djevojaka iz daktilografskog biroa, nekoj vrsti zamjene za antički kor.

Kao što ima višak "narativnih razvodnika", knjiga ima i drugih suficita. Bavi se cijelim nizom važnih i dubokih društvenih, odnosno političkih trauma, u rasponu od staljinističkih čistki do progona pripadnika LGBT populacije u SAD-u, ostajući, međutim, uglavnom na površini tih bolnih povijesnih epizoda i reciklirajući opća mjesta. No, najvažnija slabost knjige tiče se činjenice da dvije usporedne priče koje Prescottova veze nisu upletene u istu mustru.

OPERATIVKE CIA-e

Prva se zbiva u Rusiji i tiče se Pasternakove svakodnevice koja je presudno obilježena agonijskim strahom od surove represije i njegovim osebujnim stilom života (lik Lare barem dijelom je nadahnut Olgom Ivinskajom, njegovom dugogodišnjom ljubavnicom, koju je volio strastveno, ali ne toliko da bi zbog nje napustio zakonitu suprugu). Druga je storija situirana pretežno u SAD i bavi se sudbinama dviju djevojaka koje su kao operativke CIA-e bile umiješane u švercanje "Doktora Živaga" natrag u domovinu.

Prva, ruska priča nije bogzna kako napeta i dramatična, jer je uglavnom oslonjena na otprije poznate povijesne činjenice. Druga je, pak, "većinski izmaštana", kudikamo zanimljivija, napetija i slojevitija, ali se s prvom uopće ne dodiruje. Kao što su sudjelovale u švercu Pasternakova libra, djevojke su mogle dati doprinos bilo kojemu drugom obliku obavještajne kontrabande. Ta okolnost ama baš ništa ne bi promijenila u njihovim životima.

Ukratko, Lara Prescott zagrizla je više nego što je uspjela prožvakati. Time čak ne želim reći da bi netko drugi na njezinome mjestu lakše izašao na kraj s takvim viškom materijala (i ambicija). Dapače, čisto sumnjam da je itko dorastao tako zahtjevnom i, u suštini, nepotrebnom zadatku. Šteta što je ispalo tako, jer da je izoštrila žanrovski fokus, pa se odlučila što uistinu želi napisati, špijunski triler, povijesni ili ljubavni roman, autorica je od takvoga stvarnosnoga štofa mogla istkati zanimljivu knjigu o ulozi lijepe književnosti u ružnim vremenima.

Uglavnom se radilo o djelima ruskih pisaca koja su kod kuće bila zabranjena, ali su u rukopisnoj formi prošvercana na zapad. CIA bi ih potom vraćala u domovinu, čvrsto uvjerena da će sovjetski građani, jednom kad se suoče s oporbenim glasovima svojih darovitih zemljaka, shvatiti u kakvoj satrapiji žive te da će poželjeti temeljite društvene promjene.

Potankosti o toj vrsti literarne kontrabande koja je cvala pedesetih godina dvadesetog stoljeća, dospjele su u javnost nakon što je CIA deklasificirala dio svog arhiva. Ta obimna građa postala je sirovinom za cijeli niz publicističkih naslova koji su pokušali rekonstruirati neke markantne, a dugo vremena zatajene epizode iz špijunskoga rata. Najslavnija od svih operacija, ona kojom je "Doktor Živago" Borisa Pasternaka prošvercan natrag u Sovjetski Savez, nadahnula je Teksašanku Laru Prescott na pisanje romanesknog debija pod naslovom "Čuvarice tajni".

Ona kao da je bila predestinirana da se uhvati u koštac s tom pričom, jer su je roditelji krstili imenom neutješne ljubavi Jurija Andrejeviča Živaga. Jednom kad se upoznala s grubim konturama priče (grubim utoliko što su mnoga imena i drugi škakljivi detalji iz starih dokumenata ostali zacrnjeni i nakon deklasifikacije spisa) poželjela je popuniti praznine osloncem na vlastitu maštu, iz čega je nastao libar koji se vrlo brzo pretvorio u globalnu uspješnicu. Prava na njegovo izdavanje prodana su u tridesetak zemalja, a Ink Factory i Marc Platt Productions rade na televizijskoj adaptaciji knjige.

'NARATIVNI RAZVODNICI'

Pa vrijedi li roman tolike strke i jagme? Najkraće rečeno: da, ali ne. Čvrsto sam uvjeren da nitko neće odustati od njegova čitanja, a još čvršće da će svi kad sklope posljednju stranicu osjećati manje ili veće (premda se kladim na potonju opciju) razočaranje. Naime, ovome romanu ništa ne fali, ali je puno toga čisti višak. Za početak, lijepo je kad se autorica odluči izmjenjivati pripovjedne perspektive, pa se vješto šalta iz jednoga u drugi glas. Problem, međutim, može nastati kad se ti glasovi namnože u tolikome broju da škode preglednosti, tečnosti i dinamici pripovijedanja. Osobito kad jedan od glasova pripada množini djevojaka iz daktilografskog biroa, nekoj vrsti zamjene za antički kor.

Kao što ima višak "narativnih razvodnika", knjiga ima i drugih suficita. Bavi se cijelim nizom važnih i dubokih društvenih, odnosno političkih trauma, u rasponu od staljinističkih čistki do progona pripadnika LGBT populacije u SAD-u, ostajući, međutim, uglavnom na površini tih bolnih povijesnih epizoda i reciklirajući opća mjesta. No, najvažnija slabost knjige tiče se činjenice da dvije usporedne priče koje Prescottova veze nisu upletene u istu mustru.

OPERATIVKE CIA-e

Prva se zbiva u Rusiji i tiče se Pasternakove svakodnevice koja je presudno obilježena agonijskim strahom od surove represije i njegovim osebujnim stilom života (lik Lare barem dijelom je nadahnut Olgom Ivinskajom, njegovom dugogodišnjom ljubavnicom, koju je volio strastveno, ali ne toliko da bi zbog nje napustio zakonitu suprugu). Druga je storija situirana pretežno u SAD i bavi se sudbinama dviju djevojaka koje su kao operativke CIA-e bile umiješane u švercanje "Doktora Živaga" natrag u domovinu.

Prva, ruska priča nije bogzna kako napeta i dramatična, jer je uglavnom oslonjena na otprije poznate povijesne činjenice. Druga je, pak, "većinski izmaštana", kudikamo zanimljivija, napetija i slojevitija, ali se s prvom uopće ne dodiruje. Kao što su sudjelovale u švercu Pasternakova libra, djevojke su mogle dati doprinos bilo kojemu drugom obliku obavještajne kontrabande. Ta okolnost ama baš ništa ne bi promijenila u njihovim životima.

Ukratko, Lara Prescott zagrizla je više nego što je uspjela prožvakati. Time čak ne želim reći da bi netko drugi na njezinome mjestu lakše izašao na kraj s takvim viškom materijala (i ambicija). Dapače, čisto sumnjam da je itko dorastao tako zahtjevnom i, u suštini, nepotrebnom zadatku. Šteta što je ispalo tako, jer da je izoštrila žanrovski fokus, pa se odlučila što uistinu želi napisati, špijunski triler, povijesni ili ljubavni roman, autorica je od takvoga stvarnosnoga štofa mogla istkati zanimljivu knjigu o ulozi lijepe književnosti u ružnim vremenima.

CIA nikada nije previše držala do Bertolta Brechta, ali je, izgleda, visoko cijenila njegovu slavnu misao "Knjiga je oružje, uzmi je u ruke". U jeku hladnoga rata, dok su dva nepomirljiva bloka gomilala nuklearne bombe, američki špijuni, odnosno barem jedan odjel Središnje obavještajne agencije, naoružavao se librima trudeći se izvesti ih s onu stranu željezne zavjese. Uglavnom se radilo o djelima ruskih pisaca koja su kod kuće bila zabranjena, ali su u rukopisnoj formi prošvercana na zapad.
