Prije nego što je postao književnik, Gabriel García Márquez bio je novinar. To je, međutim, ostao i nakon što se upisao u literarne besmrtnike. Svom izvornom zanimanju bio je toliko odan da ga je nazvao najboljim poslom na svijetu, zapisavši kako ne želi da ga se pamti ni po “Sto godina samoće” ni po Nobelovoj nagradi, nego po novinarstvu.

S ove, dakle, dvostruke distance, vremenske i prostorne (a potonja je uvijek i jezična), to je moglo zvučati kao prenemaganje. Velim moglo, jer više ne može. Nakon što je, marom Gordane Tintor, na hrvatski preveden izbor iz zamašna Márquezova žurnalističkog opusa pod naslovom “Skandal stoljeća”, svima će postati jasno kako je DNK ćaće magičnog realizma bio – i ostao, jer ovaj izbor pokriva radove u poduljemu rasponu od 1950. do 1984. godine – nesumnjivo novinarski.

Zanat pisanja u novinama na jednome je mjestu definirao kao “težak i iscrpljujući posao koji je započeo kad je jedan susjed ispričao drugome što je sinoć učinio treći”. Ako se ova formulacija samo malo korigira, dobit ćemo vrlo upotrebljivu definiciju književnosti. Dovoljno je tek naznačiti kako je treći izmaštan u glavi prvoga. Da između pisanja za novine i škrabanja za knjige ne postoji – ili barem ne mora postojati – tako velika i nepremostiva razlika, svjedoče zapisi sabrani u ovome svesku.

Vrsta deformacije

Znatiželjni čitatelj tu će pronaći žurnalističku rinfuzu različitih žanrova, u rasponu od nepretencioznih bilješki “o ničemu”, dojmljivih krokija naoko obične svakodnevice, pa sve do reporterskih freski koje oživljavaju osebujna podneblja i epohe. Svim tim tekstovima, ma koliko neusporedivi oni bili, zajednička je strast kojoj Márquez niti je mogao niti htio uteći. A zašto? Pustimo ga neka sâm odgovori: “Čovjek je jednostavno pisac kao što je Židov ili crnac. Uspjeh ohrabruje, potpora čitatelja je stimulativna, ali to su samo dodatne pogodnosti jer dobar pisac nastavlja pisati u svakom slučaju, pa makar i s poderanim cipelama, pa makar se njegove knjige i ne prodavale.

To je neka vrsta deformacije koja dobro objašnjava društveno ludilo koje se ogleda u činjenici da su se toliki muškarci i žene izgladnjivali do smrti kako bi radili nešto što, na kraju krajeva i govoreći posve ozbiljno, ničemu ne služi.”

Nužnost ljevice

Iako se gornji reci mogu nekome činiti kao gorka ispovijed čovjeka koji je osuđen na prokletstvo pisanja, Márquezu je strana svaka kuknjava. Književnike ne treba sažalijevati, drži on, osobito ako dolaze iz njegova dijela svijeta: “Mi pisci Latinske Amerike i Kariba moramo priznati, s rukom na srcu, da je zbilja bolji pisac od nas. Naša je sudbina, a možda i naša slava, u tome da je pokušamo imitirati s poniznošću i najbolje što možemo.”

Ta razularena zbilja koja svojim bizarnim zapletima nadmašuje bilo čiju imaginaciju, razlog je što se i politička opredjeljenja u Latinskoj Americi biraju drukčije. Kako je prosvijećeno i sućutno čeljade njegova naraštaja moglo odoljeti kušnji da postane gorljivi ljevičar, kad su cijelim kontinentom drmali desničarski lupeži i ubojice? U tom je smislu poučan detalj iz jednoga članka o Kubi (objavljenog 1977.), gdje se Márquez prisjetio pariške anegdote iz 1955., kad je neki njegov prijatelj izišao na prozor i svojim latinskoameričkim kumpanjima požurio euforično objaviti toliko žuđenu vijest da je diktator pao. Okej, ali koji? “Na uspavanoj ulici nastalo je komešanje jer je svatko od nas pomislio da je onaj koji je pao bio njegov”, piše Gabriel García. “Argentinci su mislili da je to bio Juan Domingo Perón, Paragvajci su pomislili da je bio Alfredo Stroessner, Peruanci su mislili da je pao Manuel Odría, Kolumbijci su misli da je to bio Gustavo Rojas Pinilla, Nikaragvanci su mislili da je riječ o Anastasiu Somozi, Venezuelanci su mislili da je u pitanju Marcos Pérez Jimenéz, Gvatemalci su mislili da je Castillo Armas, Dominikanci su mislili da je Rafael Leónidas Trujillo, a Kubanci su mislili da je Fulgencio Batista.” Pa hajde ti ne budi ljevičar.

”Skandal stoljeća” dragocjena je knjiga jer pokazuje kako je Márquez ustvari bio veći pisac nego što smo mislili. Nije da smo sumnjali u njegov talent, ali smo o njegovom novinarskom opusu znali vrlo malo. Tu zjapeću prazninu u našem poznavanju njegova djela ovaj libar nadmoćno premošćuje, otkrivajući nam kako je veliki nobelovac prije i poslije svega bio veliki novinar. “Skandal stoljeća” otkriva, međutim, još ponešto: da je i novinarstvo nekoć bilo velika stvar, zanat kojemu su se posvećivali i bez zadrške predavali najbolji.•

Prije nego što je postao književnik, Gabriel García Márquez bio je novinar. To je, međutim, ostao i nakon što se upisao u literarne besmrtnike. Svom izvornom zanimanju bio je toliko odan da ga je nazvao najboljim poslom na svijetu, zapisavši kako ne želi da ga se pamti ni po “Sto godina samoće” ni po Nobelovoj nagradi, nego po novinarstvu.

S ove, dakle, dvostruke distance, vremenske i prostorne (a potonja je uvijek i jezična), to je moglo zvučati kao prenemaganje. Velim moglo, jer više ne može. Nakon što je, marom Gordane Tintor, na hrvatski preveden izbor iz zamašna Márquezova žurnalističkog opusa pod naslovom “Skandal stoljeća”, svima će postati jasno kako je DNK ćaće magičnog realizma bio – i ostao, jer ovaj izbor pokriva radove u poduljemu rasponu od 1950. do 1984. godine – nesumnjivo novinarski.

Zanat pisanja u novinama na jednome je mjestu definirao kao “težak i iscrpljujući posao koji je započeo kad je jedan susjed ispričao drugome što je sinoć učinio treći”. Ako se ova formulacija samo malo korigira, dobit ćemo vrlo upotrebljivu definiciju književnosti. Dovoljno je tek naznačiti kako je treći izmaštan u glavi prvoga. Da između pisanja za novine i škrabanja za knjige ne postoji – ili barem ne mora postojati – tako velika i nepremostiva razlika, svjedoče zapisi sabrani u ovome svesku.

Vrsta deformacije

Znatiželjni čitatelj tu će pronaći žurnalističku rinfuzu različitih žanrova, u rasponu od nepretencioznih bilješki “o ničemu”, dojmljivih krokija naoko obične svakodnevice, pa sve do reporterskih freski koje oživljavaju osebujna podneblja i epohe. Svim tim tekstovima, ma koliko neusporedivi oni bili, zajednička je strast kojoj Márquez niti je mogao niti htio uteći. A zašto? Pustimo ga neka sâm odgovori: “Čovjek je jednostavno pisac kao što je Židov ili crnac. Uspjeh ohrabruje, potpora čitatelja je stimulativna, ali to su samo dodatne pogodnosti jer dobar pisac nastavlja pisati u svakom slučaju, pa makar i s poderanim cipelama, pa makar se njegove knjige i ne prodavale.

To je neka vrsta deformacije koja dobro objašnjava društveno ludilo koje se ogleda u činjenici da su se toliki muškarci i žene izgladnjivali do smrti kako bi radili nešto što, na kraju krajeva i govoreći posve ozbiljno, ničemu ne služi.”

Nužnost ljevice

Iako se gornji reci mogu nekome činiti kao gorka ispovijed čovjeka koji je osuđen na prokletstvo pisanja, Márquezu je strana svaka kuknjava. Književnike ne treba sažalijevati, drži on, osobito ako dolaze iz njegova dijela svijeta: “Mi pisci Latinske Amerike i Kariba moramo priznati, s rukom na srcu, da je zbilja bolji pisac od nas. Naša je sudbina, a možda i naša slava, u tome da je pokušamo imitirati s poniznošću i najbolje što možemo.”

Ta razularena zbilja koja svojim bizarnim zapletima nadmašuje bilo čiju imaginaciju, razlog je što se i politička opredjeljenja u Latinskoj Americi biraju drukčije. Kako je prosvijećeno i sućutno čeljade njegova naraštaja moglo odoljeti kušnji da postane gorljivi ljevičar, kad su cijelim kontinentom drmali desničarski lupeži i ubojice? U tom je smislu poučan detalj iz jednoga članka o Kubi (objavljenog 1977.), gdje se Márquez prisjetio pariške anegdote iz 1955., kad je neki njegov prijatelj izišao na prozor i svojim latinskoameričkim kumpanjima požurio euforično objaviti toliko žuđenu vijest da je diktator pao. Okej, ali koji? “Na uspavanoj ulici nastalo je komešanje jer je svatko od nas pomislio da je onaj koji je pao bio njegov”, piše Gabriel García. “Argentinci su mislili da je to bio Juan Domingo Perón, Paragvajci su pomislili da je bio Alfredo Stroessner, Peruanci su mislili da je pao Manuel Odría, Kolumbijci su misli da je to bio Gustavo Rojas Pinilla, Nikaragvanci su mislili da je riječ o Anastasiu Somozi, Venezuelanci su mislili da je u pitanju Marcos Pérez Jimenéz, Gvatemalci su mislili da je Castillo Armas, Dominikanci su mislili da je Rafael Leónidas Trujillo, a Kubanci su mislili da je Fulgencio Batista.” Pa hajde ti ne budi ljevičar.

”Skandal stoljeća” dragocjena je knjiga jer pokazuje kako je Márquez ustvari bio veći pisac nego što smo mislili. Nije da smo sumnjali u njegov talent, ali smo o njegovom novinarskom opusu znali vrlo malo. Tu zjapeću prazninu u našem poznavanju njegova djela ovaj libar nadmoćno premošćuje, otkrivajući nam kako je veliki nobelovac prije i poslije svega bio veliki novinar. “Skandal stoljeća” otkriva, međutim, još ponešto: da je i novinarstvo nekoć bilo velika stvar, zanat kojemu su se posvećivali i bez zadrške predavali najbolji.•
