Fotografija snimljena 2. travnja 1863. godine, nazvana “Izbičevani Peter”, ogledna je ilustracija okrutnosti ropstva i rasizma. Abolicionisti su posjeli rečenog Petera (pravim imenom Gordon) na stolicu i fotografirali njegova gola leđa išarana uznemirujuće grotesknim ožiljcima bičevanja kako bi ukazali na grozote koje su robovi trpjeli na robovlasničkim plantažama. “Izbičevani Peter” bio je simbol ropstva, ali i slobode.

Gordon je pobjegao s plantaže i prevalio 60-ak kilometara u desetak dana, hitajući kroz močvare prema slobodi, odnosno Lincolnovoj vojsci u Baton Rougeu (Louisiana). Za njegovim petama nalazili su se lovci na robove sa psima tragačima, kojima je zavarao miris tako što se premazao lukom ponesenim s plantaže. Kad se konačno dočepao Baton Rougea, on se (s)našao i među trupama vojske Unije tijekom američkog Građanskog rata.

Kakva priča i kakav lik, veći od života, kao stvoreni za film, zar ne? Bilo je pitanje trena kad će Hollywood preseliti ovu priču na ekran, posebice nakon što su filmovi o ropstvu i robovima postali oskarovski trend 2010-ih i šire, od “Oslobođenog Djanga”, “Lincolna” i “12 godina ropstva” do “Harriet”, “Antebelluma” i serije “The Underground Railroad”. Dogodilo se to krajem prošle godine, kad je pala prva klapa na filmu naslovljenom “Emancipation”. S Antoineom Fuquom iza kamere (“Dan obuke”, “Pravednik”) i Willom Smithom kao glumcem i producentom, “Emancipation” je mirisao na Oscare a la “12 Years a Slave” ili barem na zlatni kipić u kategoriji glavne muške uloge. O tome je napose Smith zasigurno maštao.

Međutim, glumac je Oscara dobio za “Kralja Richarda” i došao na loš glas u Hollywoodu kad je na svečanoj ceremoniji dodjele zlatnih kipića opalio šamar kolegi Chrisu Rocku zato što mu je uvrijedio ženu. Razmatralo se da, zbog toga, “Emancipation” doživi premijeru 2023. godine, kad se eho šamara malo slegne, ali na koncu je odlučeno da film bude pušten u limitiranu kinodistribuciju i na streaming servis Apple TV+ ovog prosinca, u jeku tzv. oskarovske sezone.

Hoće li “Emancipation” biti nominiran u nekoj kategoriji, teško je reći, no moguće je da ga Akademija preskoči, kao što je preskočen i u nominacijama za Zlatne globuse jer, k tome, nije toliko dobar, naprotiv, ispunjava norme nekakvog ordinarnog, korektno-solidnog filma i ne doseže traženu veličinu i ekstraordinarnost računajući temu.

Mnogi članovi Akademije na koncu smatraju da bi Smith trebao biti kažnjen doživotnom zabranom dolaska na dodjelu Oscara, tako da bi bio mirakul ako bi upravo on bio nominiran, odnosno znak da mu je oprošteno i da je opet dio hollywoodske elite. Mada, opet, nakon što je film entuzijastično primljen nakon projekcije na konferenciji fondacije Congressional Black Caucus, koja se bori za crnačka prava, ništa nije isključeno. Znamo kako je Akademija osjetljiva na političku korektnost.

Bilo kako bilo, Smithu je “Emancipation” uletio kao naručen s obzirom na to koga glumi u filmu koji dođe kao njegova pasija i iskupljenje budući da šamarom nije uvrijedio samo Akademiju, nego i crnačku zajednicu. Osobno, Smith je bio uvjerljiviji kao “King Richard”, otac teniskih sestara Williams, u superiornijem filmu, ali ovdje ima nekoliko oskarovskih momenata.

Primjerice, kad bijelci banu na prag Peterove kolibe i počnu ga odvlačiti od žene Dodienne (Charmaine Bingwa) i djece, on će iščupati okvire vrata grčevito se držeći kako bi ostao s familijom. “Vratit ću ti se”, obećava ženi Peter, kojeg Smith glumi oskarovski uživljeno, ponekad i preuživljeno računajući njegov naglasak i intonacije, toliko da je bolji kad šuti i govori prodornim pogledom, kad njegova tjelesna transformacija dolazi do izražaja.

Ipak, film pomiruje njegove herojske akcijske i oskarovske dramske uloge. “Emancipation” je spoj “12 godina ropstva”, prvog “Ramba”, “Apocalypta” i “Povratnika”, svakako bolji od relativno slično postavljene “Harriet” o bijegu Harriet Tubman iz ropstva, nakon čega je postala “jedna od najvećih američkih junakinja čija je hrabrost, domišljatost i upornost oslobodila stotine robova i promijenila tijek povijesti”.

”Harriet” je robovala Oscaru, a “Emancipation” je manje proziran u tom smislu, a više spektakularan kao mješavina biografskog filma, povijesnog spektakla, prestižne drame i herojske akcije, premda se pred kraj pretvara u oskarovski “Rat za slavu”, koji je Denzelu Washingtonu donio prvi zlatni kipić.

Nakon što se Peter dade u bijeg s plantaže, odlučan da radije sam uzme slobodu (i sudbinu) u svoje ruke nego da čeka da ga oslobode, on postaje ramboidni junak akcijskog filma, hrva se s aligatorom u močvari poput Tarzana i bori se protiv lovaca na robove koje predvodi zloglasni “slave catcher” rasist Fassel (uvijek dobri Ben Foster u relativno sličnoj ulozi kakvu je tumačio Joel Edgerton u “The Underground Railroad”).

To je opravdana pjesnička sloboda/akcijska dramatizacija istinite priče s obzirom na to da se o stvarnom liku malo toga znalo. Fuqua se, očekivano, bolje snalazi u akcijskim nego u dramskim dionicama, a ako ne postiže kinetiku “Apocalypta”, u nekoliko navrata prilično umješno stvara tenziju i s direktorom fotografije Robertom Richardsonom (“Kill Bill”, “Bilo jednom u... Hollywoodu”) doziva u sjećanje krajobraze iz filmova Andreja Tarkovskog.

Richardson snima film u ispranim bojama, gotovo kao crno-bijeli, što pogoduje stvaranju atmosfere, ali i tome da nasilje bude nešto blaže bez izrazito crvene krvi. Osjetljivije gledatelje treba upozoriti na nasilje, od bičevanja do žigosanja obraza, od amputiranih udova do dekapitiranih glava.

Najviše, međutim, peku Peterovi ožiljci sa stvarne slike čije stvaranje Fuqua rekreira u dojmljivoj sceni. “Zašto radiš ovo?” pita Peter fotografa abolicionista, a on u odgovoru otkriva smisao fotografije i filma. “Da bi svijet mogao znati kako ropstvo doista izgleda.”

Fotografija snimljena 2. travnja 1863. godine, nazvana “Izbičevani Peter”, ogledna je ilustracija okrutnosti ropstva i rasizma. Abolicionisti su posjeli rečenog Petera (pravim imenom Gordon) na stolicu i fotografirali njegova gola leđa išarana uznemirujuće grotesknim ožiljcima bičevanja kako bi ukazali na grozote koje su robovi trpjeli na robovlasničkim plantažama. “Izbičevani Peter” bio je simbol ropstva, ali i slobode.

Gordon je pobjegao s plantaže i prevalio 60-ak kilometara u desetak dana, hitajući kroz močvare prema slobodi, odnosno Lincolnovoj vojsci u Baton Rougeu (Louisiana). Za njegovim petama nalazili su se lovci na robove sa psima tragačima, kojima je zavarao miris tako što se premazao lukom ponesenim s plantaže. Kad se konačno dočepao Baton Rougea, on se (s)našao i među trupama vojske Unije tijekom američkog Građanskog rata.

Kakva priča i kakav lik, veći od života, kao stvoreni za film, zar ne? Bilo je pitanje trena kad će Hollywood preseliti ovu priču na ekran, posebice nakon što su filmovi o ropstvu i robovima postali oskarovski trend 2010-ih i šire, od “Oslobođenog Djanga”, “Lincolna” i “12 godina ropstva” do “Harriet”, “Antebelluma” i serije “The Underground Railroad”. Dogodilo se to krajem prošle godine, kad je pala prva klapa na filmu naslovljenom “Emancipation”. S Antoineom Fuquom iza kamere (“Dan obuke”, “Pravednik”) i Willom Smithom kao glumcem i producentom, “Emancipation” je mirisao na Oscare a la “12 Years a Slave” ili barem na zlatni kipić u kategoriji glavne muške uloge. O tome je napose Smith zasigurno maštao.

Međutim, glumac je Oscara dobio za “Kralja Richarda” i došao na loš glas u Hollywoodu kad je na svečanoj ceremoniji dodjele zlatnih kipića opalio šamar kolegi Chrisu Rocku zato što mu je uvrijedio ženu. Razmatralo se da, zbog toga, “Emancipation” doživi premijeru 2023. godine, kad se eho šamara malo slegne, ali na koncu je odlučeno da film bude pušten u limitiranu kinodistribuciju i na streaming servis Apple TV+ ovog prosinca, u jeku tzv. oskarovske sezone.

Hoće li “Emancipation” biti nominiran u nekoj kategoriji, teško je reći, no moguće je da ga Akademija preskoči, kao što je preskočen i u nominacijama za Zlatne globuse jer, k tome, nije toliko dobar, naprotiv, ispunjava norme nekakvog ordinarnog, korektno-solidnog filma i ne doseže traženu veličinu i ekstraordinarnost računajući temu.

Mnogi članovi Akademije na koncu smatraju da bi Smith trebao biti kažnjen doživotnom zabranom dolaska na dodjelu Oscara, tako da bi bio mirakul ako bi upravo on bio nominiran, odnosno znak da mu je oprošteno i da je opet dio hollywoodske elite. Mada, opet, nakon što je film entuzijastično primljen nakon projekcije na konferenciji fondacije Congressional Black Caucus, koja se bori za crnačka prava, ništa nije isključeno. Znamo kako je Akademija osjetljiva na političku korektnost.

Bilo kako bilo, Smithu je “Emancipation” uletio kao naručen s obzirom na to koga glumi u filmu koji dođe kao njegova pasija i iskupljenje budući da šamarom nije uvrijedio samo Akademiju, nego i crnačku zajednicu. Osobno, Smith je bio uvjerljiviji kao “King Richard”, otac teniskih sestara Williams, u superiornijem filmu, ali ovdje ima nekoliko oskarovskih momenata.

Primjerice, kad bijelci banu na prag Peterove kolibe i počnu ga odvlačiti od žene Dodienne (Charmaine Bingwa) i djece, on će iščupati okvire vrata grčevito se držeći kako bi ostao s familijom. “Vratit ću ti se”, obećava ženi Peter, kojeg Smith glumi oskarovski uživljeno, ponekad i preuživljeno računajući njegov naglasak i intonacije, toliko da je bolji kad šuti i govori prodornim pogledom, kad njegova tjelesna transformacija dolazi do izražaja.

Ipak, film pomiruje njegove herojske akcijske i oskarovske dramske uloge. “Emancipation” je spoj “12 godina ropstva”, prvog “Ramba”, “Apocalypta” i “Povratnika”, svakako bolji od relativno slično postavljene “Harriet” o bijegu Harriet Tubman iz ropstva, nakon čega je postala “jedna od najvećih američkih junakinja čija je hrabrost, domišljatost i upornost oslobodila stotine robova i promijenila tijek povijesti”.

”Harriet” je robovala Oscaru, a “Emancipation” je manje proziran u tom smislu, a više spektakularan kao mješavina biografskog filma, povijesnog spektakla, prestižne drame i herojske akcije, premda se pred kraj pretvara u oskarovski “Rat za slavu”, koji je Denzelu Washingtonu donio prvi zlatni kipić.

Nakon što se Peter dade u bijeg s plantaže, odlučan da radije sam uzme slobodu (i sudbinu) u svoje ruke nego da čeka da ga oslobode, on postaje ramboidni junak akcijskog filma, hrva se s aligatorom u močvari poput Tarzana i bori se protiv lovaca na robove koje predvodi zloglasni “slave catcher” rasist Fassel (uvijek dobri Ben Foster u relativno sličnoj ulozi kakvu je tumačio Joel Edgerton u “The Underground Railroad”).

To je opravdana pjesnička sloboda/akcijska dramatizacija istinite priče s obzirom na to da se o stvarnom liku malo toga znalo. Fuqua se, očekivano, bolje snalazi u akcijskim nego u dramskim dionicama, a ako ne postiže kinetiku “Apocalypta”, u nekoliko navrata prilično umješno stvara tenziju i s direktorom fotografije Robertom Richardsonom (“Kill Bill”, “Bilo jednom u... Hollywoodu”) doziva u sjećanje krajobraze iz filmova Andreja Tarkovskog.

Richardson snima film u ispranim bojama, gotovo kao crno-bijeli, što pogoduje stvaranju atmosfere, ali i tome da nasilje bude nešto blaže bez izrazito crvene krvi. Osjetljivije gledatelje treba upozoriti na nasilje, od bičevanja do žigosanja obraza, od amputiranih udova do dekapitiranih glava.

Najviše, međutim, peku Peterovi ožiljci sa stvarne slike čije stvaranje Fuqua rekreira u dojmljivoj sceni. “Zašto radiš ovo?” pita Peter fotografa abolicionista, a on u odgovoru otkriva smisao fotografije i filma. “Da bi svijet mogao znati kako ropstvo doista izgleda.”
