Fenomen takozvanih “djevojaka koje poste” iz viktorijanskog doba 19. stoljeća poslužio je kao inspiracija za intrigantan i provokativan film “Čudo” (“The Wonder”), Netflixovu festivalsku akviziciju s Toronta u režiji istaknutog čileanskog redatelja Sebastiana Lelioa.

Priča o tzv. fasting girls fenomenu datira iz perioda kad su pojedine djevojke navodno uspjele dugotrajno preživjeti bez hrane i pokazivale svetački (i čudotvorački) potencijal u očima religioznih fanatika, nakon što su se ekstremni postovi u srednjem vijeku pripisivali svecima koji su u krajnjem izgladnjivanju vidjeli čin pokore.

Režiser “Glorije”, “Fantastične žene” i “Glorije Bell” čini se neobičnim izborom za ovakav film, ali ne i kad se sjetimo da je istraživao “granice vjere” u “Neposlušnosti”, drami o istospolnoj ženskoj ljubavi u ortodoksnoj židovskoj zajednici.

Lelio je na koncu oduvijek zainteresiran za ženske likove, a ima veliki kredibilitet kao prvi Čileanac nagrađen Oscarom (“A Fantastic Woman), što nije uspjelo ni njegovu zemljaku Pablu Larrainu (“Neruda”, “Ema”) s oskarovskim filmovima “Jackie” i “Spencer”.

Čileanski redatelj snimio je “Čudo” kao povijesni film o sudaru razuma, vjere i praznovjerja, religijskom fanatizmu i konzervatizmu te žudnji za čudima i čudotvorcima s ehom u sadašnjosti, gdje je zaluđenost ekstremnim vjerskim ideologijama od početka pandemije sve rasprostranjenija pojava, osobito u Americi.

Nadahnut istoimenim bestselerskim romanom Emme Donoghue iz 2016. godine, “The Wonder” se neočekivano, ali smisleno otvara u modernom dobu. Prva scena nije scena “Čuda”, nego gledatelju omogućava pogled iza kulisa filma, s njegova seta. Nastupni kadar je kadar unutrašnjosti filmskog studija.

Nalazimo se na setu gdje je u tijeku konstrukcija neke kuće, jedne od onih koju ćemo vidjeti u samom filmu “The Wonder”. Kao da to nije dovoljno metafilmski, naratorica (Niamh Algar; “Vučji odgoj”) ruši “četvrti zid” i govori: “Ovo je početak filma ‘Čudo’. Ljudi koje ćete upoznati, likovi, potpuno vjeruju u svoje priče.”

”Mi smo ništa bez priča i zato vas pozivamo da vjerujete u ovu”, zaključi naratorica i kreće hipnotički uvod filma s upečatljivom proganjajućom glazbom Lelioova stalnog skladatelja Matthewa Herberta. Godina je 1862. u Irskoj, gdje se osjećaju posljedice Velike gladi, a Irci drže Engleze odgovornima za tu pošast.

U Irsku dolazi engleska medicinska sestra Lib Wrigh, u tumačenju jedne od najboljih mlađih glumica današnjice Florence Pugh, koja se vratila povijesnom filmu (“Lady Macbeth”, “Male žene”) nakon uloga u “Festivalu straha”, “Black Widow” i “Ne brini, draga”. Točnije, Lib stiže u jedno malo irsko selo.

Razlog njezina dolaska je 11-godišnja Anna O’Donnell (Kila Lord Cassidy; otkriće). Anna, doznajemo istovremeno s Lib, nije jela puna četiri mjeseca, ali je živa i zdrava, što je ravno čudu za lokalnu religioznu zajednicu koju predvode župnik i liječnik (Ciaran Hinds, Toby Jones).

”Nemoguće, kako preživljava da ne jede”, dvoji Lib kad dobije zadatak da na smjene, zajedno s časnom sestrom Michael (Josie Walker), promatra Annu iduća dva tjedna i (pr)ovjeri to “čudo”, za što se interesira i novinar londonskog “Daily Telegrapha” William Byrne (Tom Burke; "Suvenir"), jednako skeptičan poput medicinske sestre.

”Ne izgleda kao dijete koje nije jelo četiri mjeseca”, kaže promatračica Lib, čijim očima gledamo zbivanja i teško možemo biti pasivni na sve što se događa. “Posebna je, čudo... čudotvorka”, inzistiraju lokalci za Annu, koja tvrdi: “Ne moram jesti, živim na mani iz raja.”

Lokalci su uvjereni da se radi o božanskoj intervenciji i svetačkoj duši (“naša prva svetica od srednjeg vijeka”) te se nadaju da Lib neće dokazati suprotno. “Dokažite da je glupost”, izazivaju je. O čemu je ovdje riječ? Svjedočimo li stvarno Božjoj opstojnosti, odnosno čudu, maloj svetici i božanskoj intervenciji, ili Annu “potajno šopaju”?

Je li ona nečiji “pijun”? Je li posrijedi žrtva ili samožrtva? Crpi li Anna “neku silu koju još ne razumijemo”, odnosno krije li se nešto zlokobnije iza svega? Sve je moguće u misterioznom scenariju sa zagonetnim rečenicama u stilu “tuga je Božja lopata”. Scenarij je Lelio supotpisao s autoricom romana Donoghue (prethodno je scenaristički adaptirala vlastiti bestseler “Room”) i Alice Birch (“Lady Macbeth”).

K tome, Lelio i njegova snimateljica Ari Wegner (“Zola”, “Istinita priča o Nedu Kellyju”, “Šape pasje”) vizualno-atmosferski sugeriraju natruhe sporogorećeg psihološkog i nadrealnog “gotičkog” horora, kao i u nekim scenama, kao kad kamera prikaže “naslikane oči” na slici Annina pokojnoga brata, djelo njezine majke (Elaine Cassidy, stvarna mama Kile Lord).

Na određeni način, “The Wonder” bi mogao biti inverzija “Exorcista” s opsjednućem od strane Boga, ne vraga, a i film se odmotava kao svojevrsni egzorcizam naopačke ili unatrag. Ipak, kad se misterij počne razotkrivati, a Lib zbližavati s Annom, jasno je da Lelio propituje (auto)destruktivnu snagu vjere u ekstremnom izdanju na pojedinca i zajednicu.

”Čudo” bi utoliko moglo izazvati kontroverzije, iako Lelio nema ništa protiv vjere i religije, ali kritizira vjerske i religiozne krajnosti, kad se neke stvari ne dovode u pitanje, nego se svode na “Božju volju” koja je odgovor za sve neobjašnjivo. Ovdje na pamet pada citat lika Gabriela Byrnea iz filma “End Of Days” (“Početak kraja”): “Dogodi se nešto dobro, to je Njegova volja. Dogodi se nešto loše, čudni su putevi Božji...”

Krajnosti odlaze toliko daleko u smjeru hipokrizije i fanatizma da su pripadnici religiozne zajednice spremni lagati pred Bogom i dovesti nekoga do smrti, žrtvovati ga, da postane novi svetac ili svetica za neki viši cilj, od pojedinačnog (iskupljenje) do skupnog (pretvaranje sela u hodočasničko odredište). Ateistica Lib pokazuje više empatije za Annu od svih vjernika u selu i do kraja filma postiže upravo ono iz njegova naslova. Čudo.

Fenomen takozvanih “djevojaka koje poste” iz viktorijanskog doba 19. stoljeća poslužio je kao inspiracija za intrigantan i provokativan film “Čudo” (“The Wonder”), Netflixovu festivalsku akviziciju s Toronta u režiji istaknutog čileanskog redatelja Sebastiana Lelioa.

Priča o tzv. fasting girls fenomenu datira iz perioda kad su pojedine djevojke navodno uspjele dugotrajno preživjeti bez hrane i pokazivale svetački (i čudotvorački) potencijal u očima religioznih fanatika, nakon što su se ekstremni postovi u srednjem vijeku pripisivali svecima koji su u krajnjem izgladnjivanju vidjeli čin pokore.

Režiser “Glorije”, “Fantastične žene” i “Glorije Bell” čini se neobičnim izborom za ovakav film, ali ne i kad se sjetimo da je istraživao “granice vjere” u “Neposlušnosti”, drami o istospolnoj ženskoj ljubavi u ortodoksnoj židovskoj zajednici.

Lelio je na koncu oduvijek zainteresiran za ženske likove, a ima veliki kredibilitet kao prvi Čileanac nagrađen Oscarom (“A Fantastic Woman), što nije uspjelo ni njegovu zemljaku Pablu Larrainu (“Neruda”, “Ema”) s oskarovskim filmovima “Jackie” i “Spencer”.

Čileanski redatelj snimio je “Čudo” kao povijesni film o sudaru razuma, vjere i praznovjerja, religijskom fanatizmu i konzervatizmu te žudnji za čudima i čudotvorcima s ehom u sadašnjosti, gdje je zaluđenost ekstremnim vjerskim ideologijama od početka pandemije sve rasprostranjenija pojava, osobito u Americi.

Nadahnut istoimenim bestselerskim romanom Emme Donoghue iz 2016. godine, “The Wonder” se neočekivano, ali smisleno otvara u modernom dobu. Prva scena nije scena “Čuda”, nego gledatelju omogućava pogled iza kulisa filma, s njegova seta. Nastupni kadar je kadar unutrašnjosti filmskog studija.

Nalazimo se na setu gdje je u tijeku konstrukcija neke kuće, jedne od onih koju ćemo vidjeti u samom filmu “The Wonder”. Kao da to nije dovoljno metafilmski, naratorica (Niamh Algar; “Vučji odgoj”) ruši “četvrti zid” i govori: “Ovo je početak filma ‘Čudo’. Ljudi koje ćete upoznati, likovi, potpuno vjeruju u svoje priče.”

”Mi smo ništa bez priča i zato vas pozivamo da vjerujete u ovu”, zaključi naratorica i kreće hipnotički uvod filma s upečatljivom proganjajućom glazbom Lelioova stalnog skladatelja Matthewa Herberta. Godina je 1862. u Irskoj, gdje se osjećaju posljedice Velike gladi, a Irci drže Engleze odgovornima za tu pošast.

U Irsku dolazi engleska medicinska sestra Lib Wrigh, u tumačenju jedne od najboljih mlađih glumica današnjice Florence Pugh, koja se vratila povijesnom filmu (“Lady Macbeth”, “Male žene”) nakon uloga u “Festivalu straha”, “Black Widow” i “Ne brini, draga”. Točnije, Lib stiže u jedno malo irsko selo.

Razlog njezina dolaska je 11-godišnja Anna O’Donnell (Kila Lord Cassidy; otkriće). Anna, doznajemo istovremeno s Lib, nije jela puna četiri mjeseca, ali je živa i zdrava, što je ravno čudu za lokalnu religioznu zajednicu koju predvode župnik i liječnik (Ciaran Hinds, Toby Jones).

”Nemoguće, kako preživljava da ne jede”, dvoji Lib kad dobije zadatak da na smjene, zajedno s časnom sestrom Michael (Josie Walker), promatra Annu iduća dva tjedna i (pr)ovjeri to “čudo”, za što se interesira i novinar londonskog “Daily Telegrapha” William Byrne (Tom Burke; "Suvenir"), jednako skeptičan poput medicinske sestre.

”Ne izgleda kao dijete koje nije jelo četiri mjeseca”, kaže promatračica Lib, čijim očima gledamo zbivanja i teško možemo biti pasivni na sve što se događa. “Posebna je, čudo... čudotvorka”, inzistiraju lokalci za Annu, koja tvrdi: “Ne moram jesti, živim na mani iz raja.”

Lokalci su uvjereni da se radi o božanskoj intervenciji i svetačkoj duši (“naša prva svetica od srednjeg vijeka”) te se nadaju da Lib neće dokazati suprotno. “Dokažite da je glupost”, izazivaju je. O čemu je ovdje riječ? Svjedočimo li stvarno Božjoj opstojnosti, odnosno čudu, maloj svetici i božanskoj intervenciji, ili Annu “potajno šopaju”?

Je li ona nečiji “pijun”? Je li posrijedi žrtva ili samožrtva? Crpi li Anna “neku silu koju još ne razumijemo”, odnosno krije li se nešto zlokobnije iza svega? Sve je moguće u misterioznom scenariju sa zagonetnim rečenicama u stilu “tuga je Božja lopata”. Scenarij je Lelio supotpisao s autoricom romana Donoghue (prethodno je scenaristički adaptirala vlastiti bestseler “Room”) i Alice Birch (“Lady Macbeth”).

K tome, Lelio i njegova snimateljica Ari Wegner (“Zola”, “Istinita priča o Nedu Kellyju”, “Šape pasje”) vizualno-atmosferski sugeriraju natruhe sporogorećeg psihološkog i nadrealnog “gotičkog” horora, kao i u nekim scenama, kao kad kamera prikaže “naslikane oči” na slici Annina pokojnoga brata, djelo njezine majke (Elaine Cassidy, stvarna mama Kile Lord).

Na određeni način, “The Wonder” bi mogao biti inverzija “Exorcista” s opsjednućem od strane Boga, ne vraga, a i film se odmotava kao svojevrsni egzorcizam naopačke ili unatrag. Ipak, kad se misterij počne razotkrivati, a Lib zbližavati s Annom, jasno je da Lelio propituje (auto)destruktivnu snagu vjere u ekstremnom izdanju na pojedinca i zajednicu.

”Čudo” bi utoliko moglo izazvati kontroverzije, iako Lelio nema ništa protiv vjere i religije, ali kritizira vjerske i religiozne krajnosti, kad se neke stvari ne dovode u pitanje, nego se svode na “Božju volju” koja je odgovor za sve neobjašnjivo. Ovdje na pamet pada citat lika Gabriela Byrnea iz filma “End Of Days” (“Početak kraja”): “Dogodi se nešto dobro, to je Njegova volja. Dogodi se nešto loše, čudni su putevi Božji...”

Krajnosti odlaze toliko daleko u smjeru hipokrizije i fanatizma da su pripadnici religiozne zajednice spremni lagati pred Bogom i dovesti nekoga do smrti, žrtvovati ga, da postane novi svetac ili svetica za neki viši cilj, od pojedinačnog (iskupljenje) do skupnog (pretvaranje sela u hodočasničko odredište). Ateistica Lib pokazuje više empatije za Annu od svih vjernika u selu i do kraja filma postiže upravo ono iz njegova naslova. Čudo.
