Wilton Gregory ulazi u povijest: prvi Afroamerikanac koji će postati kardinal daje intervjue kao neka holivudska zvijezda i katoličkom svijetu toga nikad dosta.
Čini se da 72-godišnji nadbiskup Washingtona, u karanteni uoči velikog dana u subotu u Vatikanu, nije nimalo nervozan dok na Zoomu priča o "važnoj odluci" pape Franje.
"Ja sam samo jedna osoba, ali u ovome trenutku simbolična osoba", rekao je AFP-u nadbiskup rođen u Chicagu.

Prvi afroamerički nadbiskup glavnog američkog grada, imenovan prije 18 mjeseci, nije se ustručavao napasti predsjednika Donalda Trupa zbog manipulacije Biblijom u lipnju prošle godine nakon proturasističkog prosvjeda.
Nije izbjegavao ni najtežu "bolest" Rimokatoličke crkve, svećenike pedofile.
Nedavni izvještaj Vatikana pokazao je da je nekoliko papa ignoriralo navode da je seksualni predator bio jedan od najutjecajnijih američkih kardinala Theodore McCarrick, bivši nadbiskup Washingtona.
"To je tužan, ali važan izvještaj", posebno zbog toga što se nije mogao uložiti veto na izbor novih biskupa i kardinala, rekao je Gregory, koje je ranih 2000-tih bio predsjednik Američke biskupske konferencije.
U subotu će Gregory i još 12 tzv. prinčeva Crkve, odjeveni u crvene mantije, kleknuti pred Papom i primiti grimizne kapice ili birete.
Crvena boja simbol je predanosti kardinala da proliju svoju krv za Crkvu.
U gotovo osam godina pontifikata papa Franjo je izabrao većinu kardinala koji će odlučivati o njegovu nasljedniku, prelate koji se slažu s većinom njegovih ideja.
"Sveti Otac je poslao poruku imenujući kardinalima ljude različitih rasa, jezika, kultura", rekao je Gregory. "Imenovao je kardinale iz zemalja koje ih ranije nisu imale. Dao je jasno do znanja da želi da kardinalski zbor odražava veliku raznolikost Crkve", dodao je.
Svečanost, poznata kao konzistorij, održat će se u Bazilici svetog Petra, no ovaj put nešto skromnije zbog pandemije koronavirusa.
Vatikan ne želi ugrožavati zdravlje 83-godišnjeg Franje i novih kardinala. Dvojica iz Azije zbog pandemije nisu mogla doputovati u Vatikan, a izostat će i dosta starijih kardinala.
Gregory je doputovao u Rim samo s pomoćnikom. "Sretan sam što ću s papom Franjom biti na tom neuobičajenom konzistoriju", rekao je.
Gregoryja prati glas umjerenog čovjeka sklonog dijalogu u američkoj Crkvi podijeljenoj na naprednjake i ultrakonzervativce koji su često neprijateljski nastrojeni prema Franji i zauzimaju politička stajališta.
"To se mora promijeniti. Podjele koje se u javnosti čine tako duboke nisu način na koji smo pozvani biti Crkva", smatra Gregory. No, mir još nije na vidiku.
Franjo, čije se ideje razlikuju od Trumpovih u pogledu migracija, smrtne kazne, socijalne pravde i moći financijskih tržišta, ovoga je mjeseca toplo dočekao izbor Trumpova nasljednika, demokrata Joea Bidena.
Biden će biti drugi američki predsjednik katolik, nakon Johna F. Kennedyja.
No, manje je entuzijastičan predsjednik Američke biskupske konferencije, nadbiskup Jose Gomez koji je pokrenuo istragu Bidenova programa za pobačaj, nazvavši ga "prijetnjom općem dobru".

Wilton Gregory ulazi u povijest: prvi Afroamerikanac koji će postati kardinal daje intervjue kao neka holivudska zvijezda i katoličkom svijetu toga nikad dosta.
Čini se da 72-godišnji nadbiskup Washingtona, u karanteni uoči velikog dana u subotu u Vatikanu, nije nimalo nervozan dok na Zoomu priča o "važnoj odluci" pape Franje.
"Ja sam samo jedna osoba, ali u ovome trenutku simbolična osoba", rekao je AFP-u nadbiskup rođen u Chicagu.
Njegovo uzdignuće na čast kardinala "znak je važnosti i poštivanja afroameričke zajednice" u vrijeme kada se razmatra proglašenje svetim prvoga afroameričkog svećenika Augustusa Toltona.
Tolton, rođen u 19. stoljeću u robovlasničkom Missouriju, zaređen je u Rimu jer ga nije željelo primiti nijedno sjemenište u Americi.
No vremena su se promijenila: ne samo da Gregory uživa ugled u SAD-u, nego je i glas mnogih.
Prvi afroamerički nadbiskup glavnog američkog grada, imenovan prije 18 mjeseci, nije se ustručavao napasti predsjednika Donalda Trupa zbog manipulacije Biblijom u lipnju prošle godine nakon proturasističkog prosvjeda.
Nije izbjegavao ni najtežu "bolest" Rimokatoličke crkve, svećenike pedofile.
Nedavni izvještaj Vatikana pokazao je da je nekoliko papa ignoriralo navode da je seksualni predator bio jedan od najutjecajnijih američkih kardinala Theodore McCarrick, bivši nadbiskup Washingtona.
"To je tužan, ali važan izvještaj", posebno zbog toga što se nije mogao uložiti veto na izbor novih biskupa i kardinala, rekao je Gregory, koje je ranih 2000-tih bio predsjednik Američke biskupske konferencije.
U subotu će Gregory i još 12 tzv. prinčeva Crkve, odjeveni u crvene mantije, kleknuti pred Papom i primiti grimizne kapice ili birete.
Crvena boja simbol je predanosti kardinala da proliju svoju krv za Crkvu.
U gotovo osam godina pontifikata papa Franjo je izabrao većinu kardinala koji će odlučivati o njegovu nasljedniku, prelate koji se slažu s većinom njegovih ideja.
"Sveti Otac je poslao poruku imenujući kardinalima ljude različitih rasa, jezika, kultura", rekao je Gregory. "Imenovao je kardinale iz zemalja koje ih ranije nisu imale. Dao je jasno do znanja da želi da kardinalski zbor odražava veliku raznolikost Crkve", dodao je.
Svečanost, poznata kao konzistorij, održat će se u Bazilici svetog Petra, no ovaj put nešto skromnije zbog pandemije koronavirusa.
Vatikan ne želi ugrožavati zdravlje 83-godišnjeg Franje i novih kardinala. Dvojica iz Azije zbog pandemije nisu mogla doputovati u Vatikan, a izostat će i dosta starijih kardinala.
Gregory je doputovao u Rim samo s pomoćnikom. "Sretan sam što ću s papom Franjom biti na tom neuobičajenom konzistoriju", rekao je.
Gregoryja prati glas umjerenog čovjeka sklonog dijalogu u američkoj Crkvi podijeljenoj na naprednjake i ultrakonzervativce koji su često neprijateljski nastrojeni prema Franji i zauzimaju politička stajališta.
"To se mora promijeniti. Podjele koje se u javnosti čine tako duboke nisu način na koji smo pozvani biti Crkva", smatra Gregory. No, mir još nije na vidiku.
Franjo, čije se ideje razlikuju od Trumpovih u pogledu migracija, smrtne kazne, socijalne pravde i moći financijskih tržišta, ovoga je mjeseca toplo dočekao izbor Trumpova nasljednika, demokrata Joea Bidena.
Biden će biti drugi američki predsjednik katolik, nakon Johna F. Kennedyja.
No, manje je entuzijastičan predsjednik Američke biskupske konferencije, nadbiskup Jose Gomez koji je pokrenuo istragu Bidenova programa za pobačaj, nazvavši ga "prijetnjom općem dobru".
