Smrtonosna mećava paralizirala je na Božić Buffalo u američkoj državi New York, zarobivši vozače u njihovim automobilima, ostavivši bez struje tisuće domova i povisivši broj ljudskih žrtava jake zimske oluje koja je posljednjih dana zamrznula veći dio SAD-a.

Najmanje 30 ljudi poginulo je u incidentima povezanim s vremenskim neprilikama u SAD-u, prema podacima NBC Newsa, otkako je hladni val zahvatio većinu nacije, zajedno sa snijegom, ledom i zavijajućim vjetrovima oluje koja je zahvatila područje Velikih jezera prošli tjedan.

CNN je izvijestio o ukupno 26 smrtnih slučajeva uzrokovanih vremenskim nepogodama.

Velik dio gubitaka života koncentriran je u i oko Buffala na rubu jezera Erie u zapadnom New Yorku, dok su velika hladnoća i obilni snijeg jezerskog efekta - koji nastaje prolaskom hladnog zraka iznad toplijih jezerskih voda -- trajali kroz blagdanski vikend.

Izvršni direktor okruga Erie Mark Poloncarz rekao je da se potvrđeni broj mrtvih zbog oluje u nedjelju popeo na 12, budući da su još tri smrti zabilježene protekle noći u regiji Buffala.

Posljednje žrtve uključuju neke pronađene u automobilima, a neke u snježnim nanosima, rekao je Poloncarz, dodajući da bi broj mrtvih mogao još rasti.

Unatoč zabrani vožnje koja je uvedena od petka, stotine vozača u okrugu Erie ostali su zaglavljeni u svojim vozilima tijekom vikenda, a pripadnici Nacionalne garde pozvani su u pomoć u spašavanju koje je komplicirano zbog uvjeta ekstremne bjeline i visokog snijega, rekao je Poloncarz.

"Ovo je Božić kakvom se nitko nije nadao niti ga očekivao", rekao je Poloncarz.

“Moja najdublja sućut obiteljima koje su izgubile najmilije. Policijska uprava Buffala objavila je online molbu za javnu pomoć u potrazi i izvlačenju, tražeći od onih koji "imaju snježne sanjke i voljni su pomoći" da nazovu posebnu telefonsku liniju za upute.

Ozbiljnost oluje bila je primjetna čak i za regiju koja je navikla na oštre zimske uvjete.

Christina Klaffka, 39-godišnja stanovnica North Buffala, gledala je kako oluja otpuhuje crijepove s krova njezinog susjeda i slušala kako joj prozori zveckaju od "vjetrova poput uragana".

U subotu navečer ostala je bez struje zajedno s cijelim svojim susjedstvom, a u nedjelju ujutro još je bila bez nje.

"TV mi je stalno treperio dok sam pokušavala gledati utakmicu Buffalo Billsa i Chicago Bearsa. Nestalo mi je struje ubrzo nakon treće četvrtine", rekla je.

John Burns, 58-godišnji umirovljenik iz North Buffala, rekao je da su on i njegova obitelj bili zarobljeni u svojoj kući 36 sati zbog oluje i ekstremne hladnoće koju je nazvao "zlokobnom i gadnom".

"Nitko nije bio vani. Nitko nije čak ni šetao svoje pse", rekao je.

Guvernerka New Yorka Kathy Hochul rekla je novinarima u nedjelju da je Bidenova administracija pristala podržati njezin zahtjev za proglašenjem savezne katastrofe.

Oko 200 pripadnika Nacionalne garde mobilizirano je u zapadnom New Yorku, pružajući pomoć policiji i vatrogasnim ekipama, provodeći zdravstvene preglede i donoseći zalihe u skloništa, rekla je Hochul.

Oluja se u nedjelju kretala prema istoku, nakon što je bez struje ostavfila čak 1,5 milijuna korisnika što je krajem prošlog tjedna prisililo na otkazivanje tisuća komercijalnih letova tijekom užurbanog blagdanskog razdoblja putovanja.

Više od 150.000 domova i tvrtki u SAD-u bilo je bez struje u nedjelju, što je veliko smanjenje u odnosu na 1,8 milijuna koliko ih je bilo bez struje rano u subotu.

U Buffalu 16 posto stanovnika u nedjelju nije imalo struje, rekli su dužnosnici.

U Kanadi je također nestalo struje za najmanje 140.000 korisnika komunalnih usluga, uglavnom u pokrajinama Ontario i Quebec, koje je teško pogodio isti vremenski sustav koji je zapadni New York zatrpao snijegom.

Više od 1700 letova u Sjedinjenim Državama otkazano je od nedjelje u podne, prema FlightAware alatu za praćenje letova.

Božićne temperature bile su daleko ispod prosjeka u središnjim i istočnim dijelovima SAD-a, a ispod nule čak i južnije do obale Meksičkog zaljeva, rekao je meteorolog Nacionalne meteorološke službe Rich Otto.

Zračna luka Buffalo zabilježila je gotovo metar i pol  snijega, objavila je meteorološka služba.

U Kentuckyju su službenici potvrdili tri smrtna slučaja povezana s olujom, dok su najmanje četiri osobe poginule, a nekoliko ih je ozlijeđeno u automobilskim nesrećama u Ohiju, gdje je nalet od 50 vozila zatvorio autoput u oba smjera tijekom mećave.

Drugi smrtni slučajevi povezani s ekstremnom hladnoćom ili prometnim nesrećama izazvanim vremenskim uvjetima zabilježeni su u Missouriju, Tennesseeju, Kansasu i Coloradu.

Smrtonosna mećava paralizirala je na Božić Buffalo u američkoj državi New York, zarobivši vozače u njihovim automobilima, ostavivši bez struje tisuće domova i povisivši broj ljudskih žrtava jake zimske oluje koja je posljednjih dana zamrznula veći dio SAD-a.

Najmanje 30 ljudi poginulo je u incidentima povezanim s vremenskim neprilikama u SAD-u, prema podacima NBC Newsa, otkako je hladni val zahvatio većinu nacije, zajedno sa snijegom, ledom i zavijajućim vjetrovima oluje koja je zahvatila područje Velikih jezera prošli tjedan.

CNN je izvijestio o ukupno 26 smrtnih slučajeva uzrokovanih vremenskim nepogodama.

Velik dio gubitaka života koncentriran je u i oko Buffala na rubu jezera Erie u zapadnom New Yorku, dok su velika hladnoća i obilni snijeg jezerskog efekta - koji nastaje prolaskom hladnog zraka iznad toplijih jezerskih voda -- trajali kroz blagdanski vikend.

Izvršni direktor okruga Erie Mark Poloncarz rekao je da se potvrđeni broj mrtvih zbog oluje u nedjelju popeo na 12, budući da su još tri smrti zabilježene protekle noći u regiji Buffala.

Posljednje žrtve uključuju neke pronađene u automobilima, a neke u snježnim nanosima, rekao je Poloncarz, dodajući da bi broj mrtvih mogao još rasti.

Unatoč zabrani vožnje koja je uvedena od petka, stotine vozača u okrugu Erie ostali su zaglavljeni u svojim vozilima tijekom vikenda, a pripadnici Nacionalne garde pozvani su u pomoć u spašavanju koje je komplicirano zbog uvjeta ekstremne bjeline i visokog snijega, rekao je Poloncarz.

"Ovo je Božić kakvom se nitko nije nadao niti ga očekivao", rekao je Poloncarz.

“Moja najdublja sućut obiteljima koje su izgubile najmilije. Policijska uprava Buffala objavila je online molbu za javnu pomoć u potrazi i izvlačenju, tražeći od onih koji "imaju snježne sanjke i voljni su pomoći" da nazovu posebnu telefonsku liniju za upute.

Ozbiljnost oluje bila je primjetna čak i za regiju koja je navikla na oštre zimske uvjete.

Christina Klaffka, 39-godišnja stanovnica North Buffala, gledala je kako oluja otpuhuje crijepove s krova njezinog susjeda i slušala kako joj prozori zveckaju od "vjetrova poput uragana".

U subotu navečer ostala je bez struje zajedno s cijelim svojim susjedstvom, a u nedjelju ujutro još je bila bez nje.

"TV mi je stalno treperio dok sam pokušavala gledati utakmicu Buffalo Billsa i Chicago Bearsa. Nestalo mi je struje ubrzo nakon treće četvrtine", rekla je.

John Burns, 58-godišnji umirovljenik iz North Buffala, rekao je da su on i njegova obitelj bili zarobljeni u svojoj kući 36 sati zbog oluje i ekstremne hladnoće koju je nazvao "zlokobnom i gadnom".

"Nitko nije bio vani. Nitko nije čak ni šetao svoje pse", rekao je.

Guvernerka New Yorka Kathy Hochul rekla je novinarima u nedjelju da je Bidenova administracija pristala podržati njezin zahtjev za proglašenjem savezne katastrofe.

Oko 200 pripadnika Nacionalne garde mobilizirano je u zapadnom New Yorku, pružajući pomoć policiji i vatrogasnim ekipama, provodeći zdravstvene preglede i donoseći zalihe u skloništa, rekla je Hochul.

Oluja se u nedjelju kretala prema istoku, nakon što je bez struje ostavfila čak 1,5 milijuna korisnika što je krajem prošlog tjedna prisililo na otkazivanje tisuća komercijalnih letova tijekom užurbanog blagdanskog razdoblja putovanja.

Više od 150.000 domova i tvrtki u SAD-u bilo je bez struje u nedjelju, što je veliko smanjenje u odnosu na 1,8 milijuna koliko ih je bilo bez struje rano u subotu.

U Buffalu 16 posto stanovnika u nedjelju nije imalo struje, rekli su dužnosnici.

U Kanadi je također nestalo struje za najmanje 140.000 korisnika komunalnih usluga, uglavnom u pokrajinama Ontario i Quebec, koje je teško pogodio isti vremenski sustav koji je zapadni New York zatrpao snijegom.

Više od 1700 letova u Sjedinjenim Državama otkazano je od nedjelje u podne, prema FlightAware alatu za praćenje letova.

Božićne temperature bile su daleko ispod prosjeka u središnjim i istočnim dijelovima SAD-a, a ispod nule čak i južnije do obale Meksičkog zaljeva, rekao je meteorolog Nacionalne meteorološke službe Rich Otto.

Zračna luka Buffalo zabilježila je gotovo metar i pol  snijega, objavila je meteorološka služba.

U Kentuckyju su službenici potvrdili tri smrtna slučaja povezana s olujom, dok su najmanje četiri osobe poginule, a nekoliko ih je ozlijeđeno u automobilskim nesrećama u Ohiju, gdje je nalet od 50 vozila zatvorio autoput u oba smjera tijekom mećave.

Drugi smrtni slučajevi povezani s ekstremnom hladnoćom ili prometnim nesrećama izazvanim vremenskim uvjetima zabilježeni su u Missouriju, Tennesseeju, Kansasu i Coloradu.
