Timothy Ray Brown, prva osoba za koju se zna da se izliječila od HIV-a zahvaljujući jedinstvenoj metodi presađivanja matičnih hematopoetskih stanica, umro je u Kaliforniji nakon što mu se vratio rak, objavio je njegov partner.
"S velikom tugom objavljujem da je Timothy umro... danas poslije podne okružen prijateljima, nakon pet mjeseci borbe s leukemijom", objavio je njegov partner Tim Hoeffgen, prenosi agencija Reuters u srijedu.
Rođen 11. ožujka 1966., Brown je poznat kao "berlinski pacijent" pošto mu je iskorijenjen virus HIV nakon terapije primljene 2007. godine.
Njegov slučaj zadivio je i nadahnuo čitav naraštaj liječnika specijaliziranih za HIV, a pacijentima zaraženima virusom koji izaziva AIDS (sindrom stečene imunodeficijencije) pružio je nadu da će se konačno pronaći lijek za tu bolest.
"Timothyju i njegovu liječniku Geru Huetteru, uvelike smo zahvalni jer su odškrinuli vrata znanstvenicima za istraživanje koncepta da je liječenje HIV-a moguće", rekla je dr. Adeeba Kamarulzaman, predsjednica Međunarodnog društva za AIDS i profesorica medicine i zaraznih bolesti na sveučilištu Malaya.
Brownu je HIV bio dijagnosticiran 1995. godine dok je živio u Berlinu, a 2006. dijagnosticiran mu je tip raka krvi poznat kao akutna mijeloična leukemija.
Nakon presađivanja matičnih stanica Brownu je više od desetljeća nalaz na HIV bio negativan, ali mu se prošle godine vratila leukemija.
Njegovi liječnici rekli su da se rak krvi proširio na kralješnicu i mozak te je nedavno bio smješten u hospicij u Palm Springsu u Kaliforniji.
Huetter, njemački liječnik koji je liječio Browna 2007., objasnio je da se liječenje sastojalo u razaranju Brownova imunološkog sustava da bi mu se zatim presadile matične stanice s genskom mutacijom zvanom CCR5 koja je otporna na HIV.
Samo malen dio ljudi — a većina njih s precima iz sjeverne Europe — ima mutaciju CCR5 koja ih čini otpornima na virus koji izaziva AIDS.
Ti i drugi čimbenici razlog su što je Brownovo liječenje bilo skupo, složeno i visokorizično. Većina stručnjaka rekla je da ta metoda nikada ne bi mogla postati put za liječenje svih pacijenata s HIV-om jer bi za mnoge od njih sam postupak bio smrtonosan.
Više od 37 milijuna u svijetu inficirano je HIV-om, a pandemija AIDS-a usmrtila je oko 35 milijuna ljudi otkako se pojavila 80-ih godina.
Medicinski napredak u posljednja tri desetljeća rezultirao je razvojem antiretrovirusnih lijekova koji omogućuju pacijentima nositeljima virusa HIV da godinama žive ako redovito uzimaju terapiju.
Drugi pacijent s HIV-om, Adam Castillejo, koji je bio poznat kao "londonski pacijent" sve do lani kada je otkrio svoj identitet, također se podvrgnuo postupku te se i u njega povukao HIV pošto mu je2016. obavljena transplantacija kao i Brownu.
"Iako slučajevi Timothyja i Adama nisu postupci za održivu širokorazmjernu strategiju liječenja, oni su presudni u istraživanju lijeka za HIV", rekla je Sharon Lewin, profesorica i stručnjakinja za HIV na australskom Institutu Doherty.
"To je nada za znanstvenu zajednicu da ćemo jednog dana zahvaljujući njegovoj (Timothyjevoj) ostavištini imati sigurnu, isplativu i dostupnu strategiju za remisiju HIV-a i za lijek", rekla je.

Timothy Ray Brown, prva osoba za koju se zna da se izliječila od HIV-a zahvaljujući jedinstvenoj metodi presađivanja matičnih hematopoetskih stanica, umro je u Kaliforniji nakon što mu se vratio rak, objavio je njegov partner.
"S velikom tugom objavljujem da je Timothy umro... danas poslije podne okružen prijateljima, nakon pet mjeseci borbe s leukemijom", objavio je njegov partner Tim Hoeffgen, prenosi agencija Reuters u srijedu.
Rođen 11. ožujka 1966., Brown je poznat kao "berlinski pacijent" pošto mu je iskorijenjen virus HIV nakon terapije primljene 2007. godine.
Njegov slučaj zadivio je i nadahnuo čitav naraštaj liječnika specijaliziranih za HIV, a pacijentima zaraženima virusom koji izaziva AIDS (sindrom stečene imunodeficijencije) pružio je nadu da će se konačno pronaći lijek za tu bolest.
"Timothyju i njegovu liječniku Geru Huetteru, uvelike smo zahvalni jer su odškrinuli vrata znanstvenicima za istraživanje koncepta da je liječenje HIV-a moguće", rekla je dr. Adeeba Kamarulzaman, predsjednica Međunarodnog društva za AIDS i profesorica medicine i zaraznih bolesti na sveučilištu Malaya.
Brownu je HIV bio dijagnosticiran 1995. godine dok je živio u Berlinu, a 2006. dijagnosticiran mu je tip raka krvi poznat kao akutna mijeloična leukemija.
Nakon presađivanja matičnih stanica Brownu je više od desetljeća nalaz na HIV bio negativan, ali mu se prošle godine vratila leukemija.
Njegovi liječnici rekli su da se rak krvi proširio na kralješnicu i mozak te je nedavno bio smješten u hospicij u Palm Springsu u Kaliforniji.
Huetter, njemački liječnik koji je liječio Browna 2007., objasnio je da se liječenje sastojalo u razaranju Brownova imunološkog sustava da bi mu se zatim presadile matične stanice s genskom mutacijom zvanom CCR5 koja je otporna na HIV.
Samo malen dio ljudi — a većina njih s precima iz sjeverne Europe — ima mutaciju CCR5 koja ih čini otpornima na virus koji izaziva AIDS.
Ti i drugi čimbenici razlog su što je Brownovo liječenje bilo skupo, složeno i visokorizično. Većina stručnjaka rekla je da ta metoda nikada ne bi mogla postati put za liječenje svih pacijenata s HIV-om jer bi za mnoge od njih sam postupak bio smrtonosan.
Više od 37 milijuna u svijetu inficirano je HIV-om, a pandemija AIDS-a usmrtila je oko 35 milijuna ljudi otkako se pojavila 80-ih godina.
Medicinski napredak u posljednja tri desetljeća rezultirao je razvojem antiretrovirusnih lijekova koji omogućuju pacijentima nositeljima virusa HIV da godinama žive ako redovito uzimaju terapiju.
Drugi pacijent s HIV-om, Adam Castillejo, koji je bio poznat kao "londonski pacijent" sve do lani kada je otkrio svoj identitet, također se podvrgnuo postupku te se i u njega povukao HIV pošto mu je2016. obavljena transplantacija kao i Brownu.
"Iako slučajevi Timothyja i Adama nisu postupci za održivu širokorazmjernu strategiju liječenja, oni su presudni u istraživanju lijeka za HIV", rekla je Sharon Lewin, profesorica i stručnjakinja za HIV na australskom Institutu Doherty.
"To je nada za znanstvenu zajednicu da ćemo jednog dana zahvaljujući njegovoj (Timothyjevoj) ostavištini imati sigurnu, isplativu i dostupnu strategiju za remisiju HIV-a i za lijek", rekla je.
