Stanovi za koje su nekoć tako dugo marljivo štedjeli, uređivali i činili ih ugodnima za život, sada leže u hrpi ruševina nakon snažnog potresa koji je pogodio Tursku.
Nove i stare zgrade, neke izgrađene tek prije šest mjeseci, raspale su se. Druge su se spljoštile poput betonskih palačinki.
Nije poznat puni opseg štete od potresa magnitude 7,8 u ponedjeljak i neprekidnih naknadnih potresa koji su izazvali katastrofu u Turskoj i Siriji, ubivši više od 24.000 ljudi.
Broj smrtnih slučajeva u Turskoj raste svakim danom.
Paralelno, raste i bijes zbog toga zašto je, u zemlji s višestrukim linijama rasjeda i poviješću velikih potresa, kvaliteta gradnje toliko loša da se zgrade raspadaju kao da su od papira.
Stručnjaci kažu da Turska ima propise za sprječavanje takve katastrofe. Ali ih građevinske tvrtke bijedno provode, od kojih su najveće često bliske predsjedniku Recepu Tayyipu Erdoganu.
Dužnosnici kažu da je 12.141 zgrada ili uništena ili ozbiljno oštećena u Turskoj.
Budući da je prvi potres bio tako snažan, "šteta je bila za očekivati, ali ne i vrsta štete kakvu sada vidite", rekao je Mustafa Erdik, profesor na Sveučilištu Bogazici u Istanbulu, za francusku novinsku agenciju Afp.
Čak i ako se zgrada sruši, ljudi se obično mogu sakriti dok ih spasioci ne pronađu, rekao je.
Ali ovoga puta, dodao je, zgrade su se "urušile poput palačinki".
"Podovi se slažu jedan na drugi", rekao je Erdik, koji je član i Turske zaklade za potrese, što znači da su mali izgledi da će ljudi biti pronađeni živi.
Loša kvaliteta betona i armature
Pa zašto su se zgrade srušile?
Uzroci su obično povezani s lošom kvalitetom betona, koji je ponekad pomiješan s previše vode i šljunka, a premalo cementa, kaže Zihni Tekin, konzultant na Tehničkom sveučilištu u Istanbulu.
Ostali razlozi uključuju čelične šipke koje su pretanke za armaturu stupova, što utječe na izdržljivost zgrade, rekao je inženjer.
Nekoliko američkih stručnjaka za protupotresnu gradnju, gledajući fotografije i video zapise zgrada koje su se složile poput palačinki, reklo je da je glavna greška već sad očigledna: to su neelastične betonske zgrade, koje imaju neadekvatnu konfiguraciju željeznih armaturnih šipki što omogućuje da beton postane krt i eksplodira prema van, prenosi njemačka agencija dpa.

Takve su zgrade pokazale ranjivost na potrese diljem svijeta, uključujući Meksiko i Novi Zeland.
"Ako vam noseći stupovi eksplodiraju prema van, podovi će se samo naslagati jedni na druge", rekao je profesor James Dolan, stručnjak za sustave rasjeda u Kaliforniji i Turskoj.
"Ista je stvar uvijek iznova i iznova u potresima u cijelom svijetu, gdje je taj tip gradnje iznimno čest. Znamo da će se srušiti na isti način."
Drugi razlog zašto zgrade mogu biti osjetljive na urušavanje je nedostatak odgovarajućih veza između okomitih stupova i vodoravnih podova, i te veze pucaju u trešnji izazvanoj potresima, rekao je Dolan.
Tekin je također okrivio nisku kvalitetu obrazovanja inženjera i arhitekata, unatoč tome što su se privatna sveučilišta pojavila diljem Turske.
Turski dužnosnici također su se kockali ublažavanjem propisa. Turska pravila o gradnji, temeljena na kalifornijskim, redovito su revidirana od potresa 1999. u sjeverozapadnoj Turskoj. Posljednja revizija bila je 2018.
"Na papiru standardi postoje, a poslovi nadzora povjereni su privatnim tvrtkama", rekao je istanbulski arhitekt Aykut Koksal.
No, nadzor je slab, dodao je, dajući graditeljima veću slobodu da slijede - ili ne - pravila.
Bijes zbog nemara i pohlepe
Komplicirane birokratske procedure također završavaju razvodnjavanjem utvrđivanja odgovornih ako ili kada nešto pođe po zlu, rekao je Erdik.
Koraka i potpisnika je toliko da je na kraju teško identificirati tko je odgovoran.

Očigledni nemar i pohlepa koje su pokazali neki izvođači radova izazvali su bijes, posebno nakon što su se luksuzni stanovi izgrađeni u posljednjih 20 godina raspali poput špila karata.
Mnogi se nadaju da će ovaj potres konačno dovesti do boljeg nadzora.
Prva tužba podnesena je u petak u jugoistočnoj pokrajini Diyarbakir, a uslijedile su i druge.
Erdoganovo obećanje obnove
Ono što je posebno podiglo buru je važnost koju je Erdogan pridavao izgradnji otkako je njegova Stranka pravde i razvoja (AKP) došla na vlast 2002. godine. Procvat građevinarstva potaknuo je značajan gospodarski rast pod Erdoganom u prvim godinama njegove vladavine.
Službeni podaci pokazuju da se broj tvrtki koje posluju u sektoru nekretnina povećao za 43 posto u 10 godina, dosegnuvši 127.000 prije pandemije koronavirusa 2020. godine.
Budući da je Erdogan obećao da će obnoviti pogođeno područje u roku od godinu dana, pomama za nekretninama vjerojatno neće usporiti.
Mnogi špekuliraju o riziku koji predstavljaju visoke zgrade u Istanbulu. Ali za Erdika, glavna briga su "zgrade sa šest, sedam i osam katova koje grade male tvrtke ili čak same obitelji".
Nije on jedini koji se boji loše gradnje.

Stanovi za koje su nekoć tako dugo marljivo štedjeli, uređivali i činili ih ugodnima za život, sada leže u hrpi ruševina nakon snažnog potresa koji je pogodio Tursku.
Nove i stare zgrade, neke izgrađene tek prije šest mjeseci, raspale su se. Druge su se spljoštile poput betonskih palačinki.
Nije poznat puni opseg štete od potresa magnitude 7,8 u ponedjeljak i neprekidnih naknadnih potresa koji su izazvali katastrofu u Turskoj i Siriji, ubivši više od 24.000 ljudi.
Broj smrtnih slučajeva u Turskoj raste svakim danom.
Paralelno, raste i bijes zbog toga zašto je, u zemlji s višestrukim linijama rasjeda i poviješću velikih potresa, kvaliteta gradnje toliko loša da se zgrade raspadaju kao da su od papira.
Stručnjaci kažu da Turska ima propise za sprječavanje takve katastrofe. Ali ih građevinske tvrtke bijedno provode, od kojih su najveće često bliske predsjedniku Recepu Tayyipu Erdoganu.
Dužnosnici kažu da je 12.141 zgrada ili uništena ili ozbiljno oštećena u Turskoj.
Budući da je prvi potres bio tako snažan, "šteta je bila za očekivati, ali ne i vrsta štete kakvu sada vidite", rekao je Mustafa Erdik, profesor na Sveučilištu Bogazici u Istanbulu, za francusku novinsku agenciju Afp.
Čak i ako se zgrada sruši, ljudi se obično mogu sakriti dok ih spasioci ne pronađu, rekao je.
Ali ovoga puta, dodao je, zgrade su se "urušile poput palačinki".
"Podovi se slažu jedan na drugi", rekao je Erdik, koji je član i Turske zaklade za potrese, što znači da su mali izgledi da će ljudi biti pronađeni živi.
Loša kvaliteta betona i armature
Pa zašto su se zgrade srušile?
Uzroci su obično povezani s lošom kvalitetom betona, koji je ponekad pomiješan s previše vode i šljunka, a premalo cementa, kaže Zihni Tekin, konzultant na Tehničkom sveučilištu u Istanbulu.
Ostali razlozi uključuju čelične šipke koje su pretanke za armaturu stupova, što utječe na izdržljivost zgrade, rekao je inženjer.
Nekoliko američkih stručnjaka za protupotresnu gradnju, gledajući fotografije i video zapise zgrada koje su se složile poput palačinki, reklo je da je glavna greška već sad očigledna: to su neelastične betonske zgrade, koje imaju neadekvatnu konfiguraciju željeznih armaturnih šipki što omogućuje da beton postane krt i eksplodira prema van, prenosi njemačka agencija dpa.
"Stambene zgrade u tom području većinom su napravljene od krtog betona i iznimno su osjetljive na trešnju uzrokovanu potresima", objavila je tvrtka Miyamoto International za građevinski inženjering.

Takve su zgrade pokazale ranjivost na potrese diljem svijeta, uključujući Meksiko i Novi Zeland.
"Ako vam noseći stupovi eksplodiraju prema van, podovi će se samo naslagati jedni na druge", rekao je profesor James Dolan, stručnjak za sustave rasjeda u Kaliforniji i Turskoj.
"Ista je stvar uvijek iznova i iznova u potresima u cijelom svijetu, gdje je taj tip gradnje iznimno čest. Znamo da će se srušiti na isti način."
Drugi razlog zašto zgrade mogu biti osjetljive na urušavanje je nedostatak odgovarajućih veza između okomitih stupova i vodoravnih podova, i te veze pucaju u trešnji izazvanoj potresima, rekao je Dolan.
Tekin je također okrivio nisku kvalitetu obrazovanja inženjera i arhitekata, unatoč tome što su se privatna sveučilišta pojavila diljem Turske.
Turski dužnosnici također su se kockali ublažavanjem propisa. Turska pravila o gradnji, temeljena na kalifornijskim, redovito su revidirana od potresa 1999. u sjeverozapadnoj Turskoj. Posljednja revizija bila je 2018.
"Na papiru standardi postoje, a poslovi nadzora povjereni su privatnim tvrtkama", rekao je istanbulski arhitekt Aykut Koksal.
No, nadzor je slab, dodao je, dajući graditeljima veću slobodu da slijede - ili ne - pravila.
Bijes zbog nemara i pohlepe
Komplicirane birokratske procedure također završavaju razvodnjavanjem utvrđivanja odgovornih ako ili kada nešto pođe po zlu, rekao je Erdik.
Koraka i potpisnika je toliko da je na kraju teško identificirati tko je odgovoran.
Kako bi se riješio taj problem, on preporučuje nametanje osiguranja za sve aktere protiv nesavjesnog postupanja koje jamči žrtvama naknadu štete od strane onih koji su krivi.

"Tako je drugdje u svijetu i tako bi trebalo biti i u Turskoj", rekao je.
Očigledni nemar i pohlepa koje su pokazali neki izvođači radova izazvali su bijes, posebno nakon što su se luksuzni stanovi izgrađeni u posljednjih 20 godina raspali poput špila karata.
Mnogi se nadaju da će ovaj potres konačno dovesti do boljeg nadzora.
Prva tužba podnesena je u petak u jugoistočnoj pokrajini Diyarbakir, a uslijedile su i druge.
Erdoganovo obećanje obnove
Ono što je posebno podiglo buru je važnost koju je Erdogan pridavao izgradnji otkako je njegova Stranka pravde i razvoja (AKP) došla na vlast 2002. godine. Procvat građevinarstva potaknuo je značajan gospodarski rast pod Erdoganom u prvim godinama njegove vladavine.
Službeni podaci pokazuju da se broj tvrtki koje posluju u sektoru nekretnina povećao za 43 posto u 10 godina, dosegnuvši 127.000 prije pandemije koronavirusa 2020. godine.
Budući da je Erdogan obećao da će obnoviti pogođeno područje u roku od godinu dana, pomama za nekretninama vjerojatno neće usporiti.
Mnogi špekuliraju o riziku koji predstavljaju visoke zgrade u Istanbulu. Ali za Erdika, glavna briga su "zgrade sa šest, sedam i osam katova koje grade male tvrtke ili čak same obitelji".
Nije on jedini koji se boji loše gradnje.
Od ponedjeljka prima neprestane pozive investitora koji su od njega tražili da hitno procijeni njihovu visokogradnju.
