Glavni zapovjednik zloglasnih logora smrti u doba maoističkog režima Crvenih Kmera u Kambdoži priznao je u utorak pred sudom da je odgovoran za zločine mučenja i ubojstava tisuća zatvorenika te je zbog toga izrazio "duboko žaljenje".
Kaing Guek Eav, zvan Duch, rekao je pred UN-ovim sudom za zločin genocida da se želi ispričati za zločine radikalnog režima Crvenih Kmera počinjene od 1975. do 1979., kad je u logorima smrti te od gladi i bolesti umrlo 1,7 milijuna ljudi.
Duch (66), koji je zapovijedao glavnim logorom S-21, preuzeo je odgovornost za ondje počinjene zločine, a "poglavito za mučenje i smaknuća".
Procjenjuje se da je 16.000 muškaraca, žena i djece bilo mučeno i smaknuto u logoru S-21, poznatom kao Tuol Sleng.
"Želio bih izraziti duboko žaljenje i tugu", rekao je Duch, kojemu prijeti najviša moguća kazna, doživotni zatvor, jer Kambodža nema smrtne kazne.
Duch je zadnji među petero preživjelih visokih dužnosnika iz režima Crvenih Kmera kojemu se sudi na UN-ovu sudu.
Kritičari optužuju premijera Huna Sena da je htio spriječiti suđenje drugim, možebitno odgovornim osobama iz tog vremena, koje su mu danas odane i možda su članovi vlade.
Hun Sen pokazao je svojevrstan prijezir prema sudu u utorak u govoru pred 500 članova obitelji žrtava u sudnici jer je ustvrdio da suđenje velikih razmjera može izazvati građanski rat.
Hun Sen i sam je bio dužnosnik Crvenih Kmera, a izbjegao je u Vijetnam 1977. te tvrdi da nije sudjelovao u agrarnoj revoluciji Pola Pota, vođe Crvenih Kmera.
Pol Pot je umro 1998., a tada su se predali preostali dužnosnici Crvenih Kmera te se zemlja počela oporavljati.
Duch je rekao da je nastojao izbjeći imenovanje na dužnost glavnog zapovjednika logora S-21, no kad je preuzeo posao, strahovao je da bi mogao ugroziti vlastit život i živote članova svoje obitelji, ako ne bi mučenjem dobivao navodna priznanja od navodnih neprijatelja režima.
Izrazio je duboko žaljenje obiteljima žrtava, ali u njih nije zatražio oprost jer "tako teške zločine nemoguće je trpjeti", rekao je i obećao punu suradnju sa sudom kao jedini način da olakša tugu.
Mnogi vjeruju da je Duchovo priznanje iskreno, no njegov branitelj Kar Savuth tvrdi da je Duch žrtveni jarac i žrtva nasumičnog pravosuđa, jer mnogi drugi neće biti optuženi.
Dugoočekivano suđenje počelo je u ponedjeljak čitanjem optužnice na 45 stranica u kojoj su opisane metode mučenja premlaćivanjem, elektrošokovima, gušenjem i slično. Opisano je kako su djecu oduzimali roditeljima i ubijali bacanjem s trećeg kata.
"Već 30 godina milijun i pol žrtava režima Crvenih Kmera traži pravdu za svoje patnje", rekao je Chea Leang, pomoćnik državnog odvjetnika.
Većina od 14 milijuna današnjih Kambodžanaca rođena je nakon pada režima 1979., no oni danas jedva preživljavaju u toj osiromašnoj zemlji.

Glavni zapovjednik zloglasnih logora smrti u doba maoističkog režima Crvenih Kmera u Kambdoži priznao je u utorak pred sudom da je odgovoran za zločine mučenja i ubojstava tisuća zatvorenika te je zbog toga izrazio "duboko žaljenje".
Kaing Guek Eav, zvan Duch, rekao je pred UN-ovim sudom za zločin genocida da se želi ispričati za zločine radikalnog režima Crvenih Kmera počinjene od 1975. do 1979., kad je u logorima smrti te od gladi i bolesti umrlo 1,7 milijuna ljudi.
Duch (66), koji je zapovijedao glavnim logorom S-21, preuzeo je odgovornost za ondje počinjene zločine, a "poglavito za mučenje i smaknuća".
Procjenjuje se da je 16.000 muškaraca, žena i djece bilo mučeno i smaknuto u logoru S-21, poznatom kao Tuol Sleng.
"Želio bih izraziti duboko žaljenje i tugu", rekao je Duch, kojemu prijeti najviša moguća kazna, doživotni zatvor, jer Kambodža nema smrtne kazne.
Duch je zadnji među petero preživjelih visokih dužnosnika iz režima Crvenih Kmera kojemu se sudi na UN-ovu sudu.
Kritičari optužuju premijera Huna Sena da je htio spriječiti suđenje drugim, možebitno odgovornim osobama iz tog vremena, koje su mu danas odane i možda su članovi vlade.
Hun Sen pokazao je svojevrstan prijezir prema sudu u utorak u govoru pred 500 članova obitelji žrtava u sudnici jer je ustvrdio da suđenje velikih razmjera može izazvati građanski rat.
Hun Sen i sam je bio dužnosnik Crvenih Kmera, a izbjegao je u Vijetnam 1977. te tvrdi da nije sudjelovao u agrarnoj revoluciji Pola Pota, vođe Crvenih Kmera.
Pol Pot je umro 1998., a tada su se predali preostali dužnosnici Crvenih Kmera te se zemlja počela oporavljati.
Duch je rekao da je nastojao izbjeći imenovanje na dužnost glavnog zapovjednika logora S-21, no kad je preuzeo posao, strahovao je da bi mogao ugroziti vlastit život i živote članova svoje obitelji, ako ne bi mučenjem dobivao navodna priznanja od navodnih neprijatelja režima.
Izrazio je duboko žaljenje obiteljima žrtava, ali u njih nije zatražio oprost jer "tako teške zločine nemoguće je trpjeti", rekao je i obećao punu suradnju sa sudom kao jedini način da olakša tugu.
Mnogi vjeruju da je Duchovo priznanje iskreno, no njegov branitelj Kar Savuth tvrdi da je Duch žrtveni jarac i žrtva nasumičnog pravosuđa, jer mnogi drugi neće biti optuženi.
Dugoočekivano suđenje počelo je u ponedjeljak čitanjem optužnice na 45 stranica u kojoj su opisane metode mučenja premlaćivanjem, elektrošokovima, gušenjem i slično. Opisano je kako su djecu oduzimali roditeljima i ubijali bacanjem s trećeg kata.
"Već 30 godina milijun i pol žrtava režima Crvenih Kmera traži pravdu za svoje patnje", rekao je Chea Leang, pomoćnik državnog odvjetnika.
Većina od 14 milijuna današnjih Kambodžanaca rođena je nakon pada režima 1979., no oni danas jedva preživljavaju u toj osiromašnoj zemlji.
