Izdanak Chelseajeve akademije nema ni dom, ni automobil, isto tako ni bilo kakvih prihoda. U proteklih godinu i pol ovisio je o dobroj volji obitelji i prijatelja koji su mu nudili svoje kauče kako bi prespavao, ili bi mu dali novac za hotelsku sobu...
- Svaki dan provodim tako što razmišljam kamo da idem. Imam obitelj, ali ne bih želio ovisiti o njima. Želim pokušati nešto napraviti za sebe. Bilo je teško, no nastojim ne misliti o tome previše, nastojim krenuti dalje – rekao je Mellis u razgovoru s novinarom Daily Maila, prenose Sportske novosti.
Njegova okolina, kaže, pokazuje razumijevanje.
- Oni samo žele najbolje za mene, žele mi pomoći koliko god mogu. Međutim, imaju oni i svoje živote. Daju mi novac za hotel, ili ponekad mogu ostati kod njih. Nikad ne razmišljaš da bi ti se to moglo dogoditi u životu...
Mellis je 13-godišnju profesionalnu karijeru započeo debijem protiv Žiline u Ligi prvaka, potom je igrao za Southampton, Barnsley, Blackpool, Oldham Athletic, Bury, Mansfield, Bolton, Gillingham, Southend i Leatherhead.
U Southendu mu je krivo dijagnosticirana ozljeda koljena, no njegovi su problemi krenuli ranije. Alkohol je bio kriv za sve.
- Kroz cijelu karijeru to mi je stvaralo probleme. Kad piješ, ne možeš kontrolirati što radiš. To utječe na treninge, treneri nisu sretni. Sjećam se kad sam jednom stigao na trening pijan, bilo mi je 19 godina. Tadašnji pomoćni trener u Chelseaju Steve Holland me udaljio s terena... Ashley Cole mi je bio dodijeljen kao mentor kako bi me spriječio da izlazim i da priča sa mnom. Ljudi su vidjeli moj problem i trudili su se oko mene, ne mogu lagati.
Priznaje da je tada bio drzak i arogantan, jer je osjećao da bi trebao igrati.
- Mislim da to nisam kanalizirao na pravi način. Kad bih se osjećao frustrirano, jednostavno bih izašao i otišao piti. Ali tako ne zezneš Chelsea, nego sebe samoga. Otkako sam prestao igrati, imao sam više vremena za razmišljanje, i moraš požaliti. Prilaze mi ljudi koji igraju u Premier ligi i pitaju me ‘O moj Bože, što ti se dogodilo?‘ Osjećam se kao da zapravo nisam znao kakav talent imam. Izvana bih bio drzak, ali sam iznutra bio nesiguran u sebe, nisam znao što bih mogao postići, nisam vjerovao – istaknuo je Mellis.
Nažalost, s lošim navikama još uvijek nije prestao.
- Pijem koliko god mogu. Samo da zaboravim na stres. Pijem kad se ukaže prilika.
Obratio se za pomoć Udruzi profesionalnih nogometaša (PFA) te bi ovog tjedna trebao doći u kliniku Sporting Chance kako bi pokušao prevladati probleme a alkoholom.
Chelsea mu je pak ponudio ulogu skauta.
- Mislim da je to nešto u čemu ću uživati. Volim gledati mlade, osjećam da vidim potencijal u ljudima. Gledam nogomet cijeli dan, svaki dan. Volim uočiti mlade talente koji dolaze. Osjećam da im mogu pomoći na druge načine, izvan terena. Pa i pokušati ih odvratiti od stvari koje sam ja radio – zaključio je svoju tužnu priču Jacob Mellis.

Kao izuzetno daroviti mladić na početku karijere igrao je u Ligi prvaka, a tjedno mu je na račun stizalo 8.000 funti. Danas je Jacob Mellis 32-godišnji beskućnik koji je izgubio praktički sve što je imao...
Izdanak Chelseajeve akademije nema ni dom, ni automobil, isto tako ni bilo kakvih prihoda. U proteklih godinu i pol ovisio je o dobroj volji obitelji i prijatelja koji su mu nudili svoje kauče kako bi prespavao, ili bi mu dali novac za hotelsku sobu...
- Svaki dan provodim tako što razmišljam kamo da idem. Imam obitelj, ali ne bih želio ovisiti o njima. Želim pokušati nešto napraviti za sebe. Bilo je teško, no nastojim ne misliti o tome previše, nastojim krenuti dalje – rekao je Mellis u razgovoru s novinarom Daily Maila, prenose Sportske novosti.
Njegova okolina, kaže, pokazuje razumijevanje.
- Oni samo žele najbolje za mene, žele mi pomoći koliko god mogu. Međutim, imaju oni i svoje živote. Daju mi novac za hotel, ili ponekad mogu ostati kod njih. Nikad ne razmišljaš da bi ti se to moglo dogoditi u životu...
Mellis je 13-godišnju profesionalnu karijeru započeo debijem protiv Žiline u Ligi prvaka, potom je igrao za Southampton, Barnsley, Blackpool, Oldham Athletic, Bury, Mansfield, Bolton, Gillingham, Southend i Leatherhead.
U Southendu mu je krivo dijagnosticirana ozljeda koljena, no njegovi su problemi krenuli ranije. Alkohol je bio kriv za sve.
- Kroz cijelu karijeru to mi je stvaralo probleme. Kad piješ, ne možeš kontrolirati što radiš. To utječe na treninge, treneri nisu sretni. Sjećam se kad sam jednom stigao na trening pijan, bilo mi je 19 godina. Tadašnji pomoćni trener u Chelseaju Steve Holland me udaljio s terena... Ashley Cole mi je bio dodijeljen kao mentor kako bi me spriječio da izlazim i da priča sa mnom. Ljudi su vidjeli moj problem i trudili su se oko mene, ne mogu lagati.
Priznaje da je tada bio drzak i arogantan, jer je osjećao da bi trebao igrati.
- Mislim da to nisam kanalizirao na pravi način. Kad bih se osjećao frustrirano, jednostavno bih izašao i otišao piti. Ali tako ne zezneš Chelsea, nego sebe samoga. Otkako sam prestao igrati, imao sam više vremena za razmišljanje, i moraš požaliti. Prilaze mi ljudi koji igraju u Premier ligi i pitaju me ‘O moj Bože, što ti se dogodilo?‘ Osjećam se kao da zapravo nisam znao kakav talent imam. Izvana bih bio drzak, ali sam iznutra bio nesiguran u sebe, nisam znao što bih mogao postići, nisam vjerovao – istaknuo je Mellis.
Nažalost, s lošim navikama još uvijek nije prestao.
- Pijem koliko god mogu. Samo da zaboravim na stres. Pijem kad se ukaže prilika.
Obratio se za pomoć Udruzi profesionalnih nogometaša (PFA) te bi ovog tjedna trebao doći u kliniku Sporting Chance kako bi pokušao prevladati probleme a alkoholom.
Chelsea mu je pak ponudio ulogu skauta.
- Mislim da je to nešto u čemu ću uživati. Volim gledati mlade, osjećam da vidim potencijal u ljudima. Gledam nogomet cijeli dan, svaki dan. Volim uočiti mlade talente koji dolaze. Osjećam da im mogu pomoći na druge načine, izvan terena. Pa i pokušati ih odvratiti od stvari koje sam ja radio – zaključio je svoju tužnu priču Jacob Mellis.
