Magic je hrvatskog košarkaškog dragulja odabrao kao petog u prvoj rundi ovogodišnjeg NBA drafta. Obistinile su se tako prognoze koje su Hezonji predviđale mjesto između petog i desetog "picka", pa je dvadesetogodišnji Dubrovčanin postao najviše izabrani Hrvat na NBA draftu. Oborio je rekord koji je lani postavio Dario Šarić (12.).

Svečanoj večeri u Brooklynu Hezonja nije mogao prisustvovati zbog kaznenog treninga koji je morao odraditi sa suigračima u Barceloni nakon poraza u finalu španjolskog prvenstva od madridskog Reala. Kako je u nekoliko navrata već izjavio, Hezonja se više neće zadržavati u Europi. NBA mu je cilj, oduvijek je vjerovao da ondje pripada. A i sudeći prema izjavi generalnog menadžera Magica Roba Hennigana, Mario će već iduće sezone nositi dres floridskog kluba.

- Uvjereni smo da će biti s nama sljedeće sezone. Ne brinemo oko odštete, riješit ćemo to u sljedećih par dana.

E, da. Odšteta. Hezonja je Barceloni za raskid ugovora mora platiti iz svog džepa. Riječ je o dva milijuna eura. Olakotna je okolnost što je Hezonja odabran peti jer mu je za prve dvije sezone zagarantirana plaća od ukupno 6.3 milijuna dolara.

U noći NBA drafta uvijek su moguća iznenađenja i neočekivani prevrati, no u slučaju Hezonje i Magica sa sigurnošću se može reći da su zadovoljni i jedni i drugi. Hezonja jer će gotovo sigurno dobiti minutažu koju želi i prostor za pokaže sav svoj talent, a Magic jer je dobio igrača kojeg su godinama pratili. Osobno su se upoznali početkom lipnja kada su s njim odradili i 90-minutni sastanak.

- Čim sam upoznao momke, kliknuli smo. Bila je to ljubav na prvi pogled - rekao je Hezonja o tom sastanku. A Hennigan je o njegovim kvalitetama kazao:

- Mario posjeduje strašnu ofenzivnu moć, ali i dobru obranu temeljenu na njegovu atleticizmu i kretanju. Dinamičan je i mlad igrač.

Hezonja će tako postati treći Hrvat trenutno u NBA ligi. Pridružit će se Bojanu Bogdanoviću (Brooklyn Nets) i Damjanu Rudežu (Indiana Pacers). Konkurencija u Magicu, ovisno o tome hoće li ga trener Scott Skiles koristiti kao "dvicu" ili "tricu", bit će mu Oladipo, Fourner, Gordon, Harkless, Marble i Harris.

Prvi je "pick" drafta očekivano bio Karl-Anthony Towns, on je pripao Minnesota Timberwolvesima. Los Angeles Lakersi birali su drugi i dvojili su između D'Angela Russella i Jahlila Okafora. Odabrali su Russella, kojeg su priželjkivali Philadelphia 76-ersi, no njima je na koncu pripao Okafor.

New York Knicksi su se odlučili za "novog Nowitzkog" Latvijca Kristapsa Porzingisa, što nije baš naišlo na odobravanje njihovih navijača koji su željeli Justisea Winslowa.

Svečanoj večeri u Brooklynu Hezonja nije mogao prisustvovati zbog kaznenog treninga koji je morao odraditi sa suigračima u Barceloni nakon poraza u finalu španjolskog prvenstva od madridskog Reala. Kako je u nekoliko navrata već izjavio, Hezonja se više neće zadržavati u Europi. NBA mu je cilj, oduvijek je vjerovao da ondje pripada. A i sudeći prema izjavi generalnog menadžera Magica Roba Hennigana, Mario će već iduće sezone nositi dres floridskog kluba.

- Uvjereni smo da će biti s nama sljedeće sezone. Ne brinemo oko odštete, riješit ćemo to u sljedećih par dana.

E, da. Odšteta. Hezonja je Barceloni za raskid ugovora mora platiti iz svog džepa. Riječ je o dva milijuna eura. Olakotna je okolnost što je Hezonja odabran peti jer mu je za prve dvije sezone zagarantirana plaća od ukupno 6.3 milijuna dolara.

U noći NBA drafta uvijek su moguća iznenađenja i neočekivani prevrati, no u slučaju Hezonje i Magica sa sigurnošću se može reći da su zadovoljni i jedni i drugi. Hezonja jer će gotovo sigurno dobiti minutažu koju želi i prostor za pokaže sav svoj talent, a Magic jer je dobio igrača kojeg su godinama pratili. Osobno su se upoznali početkom lipnja kada su s njim odradili i 90-minutni sastanak.

- Čim sam upoznao momke, kliknuli smo. Bila je to ljubav na prvi pogled - rekao je Hezonja o tom sastanku. A Hennigan je o njegovim kvalitetama kazao:

- Mario posjeduje strašnu ofenzivnu moć, ali i dobru obranu temeljenu na njegovu atleticizmu i kretanju. Dinamičan je i mlad igrač.

Hezonja će tako postati treći Hrvat trenutno u NBA ligi. Pridružit će se Bojanu Bogdanoviću (Brooklyn Nets) i Damjanu Rudežu (Indiana Pacers). Konkurencija u Magicu, ovisno o tome hoće li ga trener Scott Skiles koristiti kao "dvicu" ili "tricu", bit će mu Oladipo, Fourner, Gordon, Harkless, Marble i Harris.

Prvi je "pick" drafta očekivano bio Karl-Anthony Towns, on je pripao Minnesota Timberwolvesima. Los Angeles Lakersi birali su drugi i dvojili su između D'Angela Russella i Jahlila Okafora. Odabrali su Russella, kojeg su priželjkivali Philadelphia 76-ersi, no njima je na koncu pripao Okafor.

New York Knicksi su se odlučili za "novog Nowitzkog" Latvijca Kristapsa Porzingisa, što nije baš naišlo na odobravanje njihovih navijača koji su željeli Justisea Winslowa.
