Kako kaže autor knjige Shaun Levy, glumac je nekada živio životom koji se trudio sakriti od javnosti. U periodu u kojem su De Niro, reditelj Martin Scorsese i njihovo društvo konzumirali droge, pogotovo kokain, glumac je postao blizak s Johnom Belushijem, piše u knjizi.

Obojica su obožavali noćni život. Iako su bili sasvim drugačiji karakteri, De Niro kao ozbiljni glumac i Belushi kao komičar, zajedno su se opijali i drogirali. Njihov razuzdani način života došao ih je glave 4. ožujka 1982. godine kad je De Niro Belushija našao s dilerom kokaina i heroina u njegovom apartmanu.

Preminuo u 33. godini

No, nije se previše obazirao na to. U Belushijev apartman posljednji put je ušao nekoliko sati prije kobnog događaja. Naime, sljedećeg jutra upravitelj hotela mu je kazao da je Belushi preminuo.

Glumac je bio slomljen. Ne samo zato što je prije nekoliko sati vidio svog prijatelja koji je preminuo sa samo 33 godine, već zato što je znao da je Belushi eksperimentirao s drogom jer je želio dobiti ulogu rock muzičara u jednom filmu.

Osim toga, silno je pokušavao imitirati De Nira.

Prema knjizi, De Nirov prijatelj, muzičar Richard Beer, ubrzo je glumca podsjetio da su prije Belushijeve smrti pričali o tome kako bi bilo dobro kad bi John zbog svoje uloge zaista konzumirao heroin kako bi sve što uverljivije ispalo.

No, nije se previše obazirao na to. U Belushijev apartman posljednji put je ušao nekoliko sati prije kobnog događaja. Naime, sljedećeg jutra upravitelj hotela mu je kazao da je Belushi preminuo.

Glumac je bio slomljen. Ne samo zato što je prije nekoliko sati vidio svog prijatelja koji je preminuo sa samo 33 godine, već zato što je znao da je Belushi eksperimentirao s drogom jer je želio dobiti ulogu rock muzičara u jednom filmu.
