Iako je vitamin A široko dostupan, od mesa i ribe do živopisnog voća i povrća, i dalje postoji rizik od negovog nedostatka. Srećom, promjene u vašoj prehrani i upotreba dodataka mogu vam osigurati da razina vitamina A bude dovoljna i stabilna.
Jedan od prvih znakova nedostatka vitamina A je loš vid noću ili pri slabom svjetlu. Osobe s rakom crijeva ili upalnom bolesti crijeva imaju također veći rizik nedostatka vitamina A srećom, nedostatak vitamina A može se liječiti dodatkom velike doze.
- Vitamin A je vitamin topiv u mastima, a pohranjuje se u jetri i masnom tkivu. Važan je za razne tjelesne funkcije, ali posebno za diferencijaciju stanica.
Stanična diferencijacija javlja se u odraslih kad god se tkivo obnavlja bilo zbog oštećenja ili bolesti. To je proces kojim stanice postaju specifične za dijelove tijela, poput moždanih stanica, stanica očiju i stanica kože, kaže Ashley Reaver, dijetetičarka na University of California, Berkeley.
Rijetki su slučajevi da ljudi koji žive u razvijenim zemljama imaju nedostatak vitamina A. Primjerice, u Sjedinjenim Državama manje od 1 posto ljudi ima nedostatak vitamina A.
To je stanje češće u zemljama čije stanovništvo nema pristup ni raznovrsnoj zdravoj hrani, ni odgovarajućoj količini hrane, ili ni jednom i drugom. Rizik od nedostatka vitamina A posebno je velik za slijedeće osobe u zemljama s nedovoljno hrane: dojenčad, djeca, trudnice, dojilje.
Nedostatak vitamina A može se pojaviti u dojenčadi koja redovito ne konzumira dovoljno majčinog mlijeka ili adaptiranog mlijeka. Može se dogoditi i u zemljama u razvoju u kojima je kronični proljev vrlo čest kod djece, kaže Acharya.
U razvijenijim zemljama nedostatku vitamina A izloženi su svi koji boluju od crijevne bolesti poput celijakije i upalnog sindroma crijeva,
- raka crijeva,
- alkoholizma,
- koji imaju minimalan unos hrane, primjerice zbog nekog poremećaja prehrane,
- imaju bolest jetre,
Sva ta stanja mogu dovesti do nedostatka vitamina A zbog pothranjenosti, manjeg unosa hranjivih sastojaka ili problema s apsorpcijom masti.
Normalna razina
Ako sumnjate da imate nedostatak vitamina A, posjetite liječnika što je prije moguće kako biste dobili točnu dijagnozu. Vaš liječnik će napraviti krvni test kako bi odredio količinu vitamina A. Normalna razina vitamin A kreće se od 15 do 60 mcg/dL (mikrograma po decilitru), a sve ispod 15 mcg/dL smatra nedostatkom. Brzim djelovanjem možete spriječiti razvoj dugoročnih posljedica poput sljepoće.

Kako liječiti nedostatak vitamina A?
Nedostatak vitamina A može se liječiti na dva načina, kaže Reaver:
1. Dodatkom vitamina A na recept u visokoj dozi,
2. Povećavanjem prehrambenog unosa hrane bogate vitaminom A
Dodavanje vitamina A u prehranu često je prvi način djelovanja, ali dodaci mogu biti potrebni, ovisno o težini simptoma pojedinca, kaže Acharya. Koliko vitamina A trebate od suplementacije ovisi o dobi:

Iako je vitamin A široko dostupan, od mesa i ribe do živopisnog voća i povrća, i dalje postoji rizik od negovog nedostatka. Srećom, promjene u vašoj prehrani i upotreba dodataka mogu vam osigurati da razina vitamina A bude dovoljna i stabilna.
Jedan od prvih znakova nedostatka vitamina A je loš vid noću ili pri slabom svjetlu. Osobe s rakom crijeva ili upalnom bolesti crijeva imaju također veći rizik nedostatka vitamina A srećom, nedostatak vitamina A može se liječiti dodatkom velike doze.
- Vitamin A je vitamin topiv u mastima, a pohranjuje se u jetri i masnom tkivu. Važan je za razne tjelesne funkcije, ali posebno za diferencijaciju stanica.
Stanična diferencijacija javlja se u odraslih kad god se tkivo obnavlja bilo zbog oštećenja ili bolesti. To je proces kojim stanice postaju specifične za dijelove tijela, poput moždanih stanica, stanica očiju i stanica kože, kaže Ashley Reaver, dijetetičarka na University of California, Berkeley.
Rijetki su slučajevi da ljudi koji žive u razvijenim zemljama imaju nedostatak vitamina A. Primjerice, u Sjedinjenim Državama manje od 1 posto ljudi ima nedostatak vitamina A.
To je stanje češće u zemljama čije stanovništvo nema pristup ni raznovrsnoj zdravoj hrani, ni odgovarajućoj količini hrane, ili ni jednom i drugom. Rizik od nedostatka vitamina A posebno je velik za slijedeće osobe u zemljama s nedovoljno hrane: dojenčad, djeca, trudnice, dojilje.
Nedostatak vitamina A može se pojaviti u dojenčadi koja redovito ne konzumira dovoljno majčinog mlijeka ili adaptiranog mlijeka. Može se dogoditi i u zemljama u razvoju u kojima je kronični proljev vrlo čest kod djece, kaže Acharya.
U razvijenijim zemljama nedostatku vitamina A izloženi su svi koji boluju od crijevne bolesti poput celijakije i upalnog sindroma crijeva,
- raka crijeva,
- alkoholizma,
- koji imaju minimalan unos hrane, primjerice zbog nekog poremećaja prehrane,
- imaju bolest jetre,
Sva ta stanja mogu dovesti do nedostatka vitamina A zbog pothranjenosti, manjeg unosa hranjivih sastojaka ili problema s apsorpcijom masti.
Normalna razina
Ako sumnjate da imate nedostatak vitamina A, posjetite liječnika što je prije moguće kako biste dobili točnu dijagnozu. Vaš liječnik će napraviti krvni test kako bi odredio količinu vitamina A. Normalna razina vitamin A kreće se od 15 do 60 mcg/dL (mikrograma po decilitru), a sve ispod 15 mcg/dL smatra nedostatkom. Brzim djelovanjem možete spriječiti razvoj dugoročnih posljedica poput sljepoće.

Kako liječiti nedostatak vitamina A?
Nedostatak vitamina A može se liječiti na dva načina, kaže Reaver:
1. Dodatkom vitamina A na recept u visokoj dozi,
2. Povećavanjem prehrambenog unosa hrane bogate vitaminom A
Dodavanje vitamina A u prehranu često je prvi način djelovanja, ali dodaci mogu biti potrebni, ovisno o težini simptoma pojedinca, kaže Acharya. Koliko vitamina A trebate od suplementacije ovisi o dobi:
