Ne moramo se svi složiti oko toga što se događa nakon smrti, no pouzdano znamo što se događa u trenucima koji prethode kraju. Stvarni trenutak smrti često je samo jedan dio složenijeg procesa umiranja u kojem se tijelo polako gasi.
Znati što možete očekivati prije smrti, u trenutku smrti, pa čak i nakon toga, može pomoći suočiti se s tim iskustvom kad za to dođe vrijeme.
Svačiji je vremenski raspored drugačiji. Koliko je vremena potrebno da tijelo umre, ovisi o vašem zdravlju, terapiji koju primate i uzroku smrti.

Neliječeni iznenadni srčani zastoj može rezultirati smrću unutar nekoliko minuta, a kod kroničnih dugotrajnih stanja tijelu trebaju tjedni i mjeseci dok se ne ugasi.
Vrijeme je to kad se čovjek povlači i odvaja od događaja iz vanjskog svijeta te se potpuno okreće sebi i svojoj privatnosti.
Sve ga manje zanimaju vijesti, televizija, kao i drugi ljudi. Sve mu je manje potrebno hrane, gubi interes za jelo i piće i vrlo često više ne želi da mu u posjet dolaze poznanici ili susjedi. U svojoj blizini želi tek nekoliko njemu bliskih osoba. Ne spava da bi napunio um i tijelo. Umjesto toga, spava jer njegovo tijelo nema energije za aktivnost.
Vitalne funkcije se usporavaju prije nego što potpuno prestanu. Srce postaje manje sposobno pumpati krv bogatu kisikom kroz cijelo tijelo. Bez toliko kisika stanice nemaju energiju potrebnu da tijelo održe budnim i aktivnim dulje vrijeme. Nove stanice kože ne zamjenjuju umiruće tako brzo, što uzrokuje stanjivanje kože. Tanka koža podložnija je modricama, posjeklinama i dekubitusu.

Dr. Kathryn Mannix, koja je svoju karijeru posvetila brizi za ljude na kraju njihovih života i edukaciji drugih o tome kako pristupiti i voditi naizgled vrlo teške razgovore o smrti, objasnila je za BBC-jev Sinece Focus Magazine što se zbiva u našem tijelu prije smrti.
"Umiruća osoba sve manje vremena provodi budna. Na životu je održavaju snovi, polusan ili razgovor sa samim sobom, čime održava ravnotežu. No ono što izgleda kao san postupno postaje nešto drugo – uranjanje u nesvijest na sve dulja razdoblja", napominje. Mogu postojati razdoblja nemira ili trenuci zbunjenosti, ili samo postupno produbljivanje nesvjestice.
Disanje osoba bez svijesti slijedi automatske obrasce koje stvara respiratorni centar u moždanom deblu. Budući da nisu svjesni svojih usta i grla, ljudi na samrti mogu disati teško, bučno ili kroz slinu u stražnjem dijelu grla. Disanje se kreće od dubokog ka plitkom i od brzog ka sporom u ponavljajućim ciklusima. Na kraju se usporava i postaje vrlo plitko, dolazi do pauza i konačno prestaje. Nekoliko minuta poslije srce će prestati kucati jer ostaje bez kisika, tjelesna temperatura pada, a koža postaje hladna i ljepljiva na dodir.
Repriza najboljih trenutaka?
Jedna snimka umirućeg mozga pak sugerira da ljudi možda imaju "reprizu" najboljih trenutaka u svojem životu u svojim posljednjim trenucima.
Skupina znanstvenika je, naime, proučavala moždane valove 87-godišnjeg pacijenta koji je bolovao od epilepsije pomoću uređaja za elektroencefalografiju (EEG), no on je usred pretrage doživio srčani udar koji je završio kobno, što je rezultiralo snimkama mozga koji umire. Na njima se vidjelo da su 30 sekundi prije prestanka rada srca moždani valovi pacijenta reagirali na isti način kao kad osoba sanja ili se nečega prisjeća. To se nastavilo i 30 sekundi nakon što je srce prestalo kucati, kad se pacijente obično već proglasi mrtvima.

Istraživanje je objavljeno u znanstvenom časopisu Frontiers in Aging Neuroscience, a koautor istraživanja dr. Ajmal Zemmar, neurokirurg na Sveučilištu u Louisvilleu, ponovio je kako su do otkrića došli sasvim slučajno. "Nismo planirali ovakav eksperiment, niti da ćemo te signale zabilježiti", naveo je.
Upitan znači li to da prije smrti vidimo trenutke provedene s bližnjima i druga radosna sjećanja, dr. Zemmar nije mogao dati odgovor.
"Iz filozofske perspektive, rekao bih da je vjerojatnije da će vas mozak prije vratiti u sretne trenutke nego u nesretne. No, ovisi o pojedincu čega će se tko prisjetiti", ocijenio je.
I druga studija, objavljena u znanstvenom časopisu Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, opisuje situaciju kad je kod dvoje ljudi kojima je dijagnosticirana moždana smrt i koji su bili isključeni s uređaja za održavanje života došlo do naglog skoka moždane aktivnosti.

Moždani valovi
Liječnici su u studiji analizirali slučajeve četiriju pacijenata koji su bili isključeni s aparata za održavanje života, a prof. dr. Jimo Borjigin, inače neurologinja, i njezin tim otkrili su kako su mozgovi dvoje pacijenata nakratko oživjeli neposredno prije smrti.
Konkretno, kod promatranih pacijenata utvrđen je iznenadni skok specifične vrste moždanih valova koji obično ukazuju na svjesno razmišljanje. Proizvodnja tih moždanih valova – zvanih gama-valovi – porasla je do tri stotine puta u odnosu na prethodne razine kod jednog pacijenta u trenucima prije smrti.
Obrasci gama-valova tih umirućih pacijenta dosegnuli su razine više od onih koje se nalaze u normalnom svjesnom mozgu. Prof. Borjing ocijenila je kako ostaje mogućnost da se "skrivena svijest", odnosno svjesno iskustvo koje trenutno ne možemo detektirati, nastavlja ispod površine te se, kako se približava smrt, pojavljuje burna aktivnost. To može biti adaptivni odgovor sličan naletu kognitivne aktivnosti koji budi spavača tijekom apneje – kad tijelu ponestane zraka, a mozak refleksno reagira kako bi dobio kisik.

Neliječeni iznenadni srčani zastoj može rezultirati smrću unutar nekoliko minuta, a kod kroničnih dugotrajnih stanja tijelu trebaju tjedni i mjeseci dok se ne ugasi.
Vrijeme je to kad se čovjek povlači i odvaja od događaja iz vanjskog svijeta te se potpuno okreće sebi i svojoj privatnosti.
Sve ga manje zanimaju vijesti, televizija, kao i drugi ljudi. Sve mu je manje potrebno hrane, gubi interes za jelo i piće i vrlo često više ne želi da mu u posjet dolaze poznanici ili susjedi. U svojoj blizini želi tek nekoliko njemu bliskih osoba. Ne spava da bi napunio um i tijelo. Umjesto toga, spava jer njegovo tijelo nema energije za aktivnost.
Vitalne funkcije se usporavaju prije nego što potpuno prestanu. Srce postaje manje sposobno pumpati krv bogatu kisikom kroz cijelo tijelo. Bez toliko kisika stanice nemaju energiju potrebnu da tijelo održe budnim i aktivnim dulje vrijeme. Nove stanice kože ne zamjenjuju umiruće tako brzo, što uzrokuje stanjivanje kože. Tanka koža podložnija je modricama, posjeklinama i dekubitusu.

Dr. Kathryn Mannix, koja je svoju karijeru posvetila brizi za ljude na kraju njihovih života i edukaciji drugih o tome kako pristupiti i voditi naizgled vrlo teške razgovore o smrti, objasnila je za BBC-jev Sinece Focus Magazine što se zbiva u našem tijelu prije smrti.
"Umiruća osoba sve manje vremena provodi budna. Na životu je održavaju snovi, polusan ili razgovor sa samim sobom, čime održava ravnotežu. No ono što izgleda kao san postupno postaje nešto drugo – uranjanje u nesvijest na sve dulja razdoblja", napominje. Mogu postojati razdoblja nemira ili trenuci zbunjenosti, ili samo postupno produbljivanje nesvjestice.
Disanje osoba bez svijesti slijedi automatske obrasce koje stvara respiratorni centar u moždanom deblu. Budući da nisu svjesni svojih usta i grla, ljudi na samrti mogu disati teško, bučno ili kroz slinu u stražnjem dijelu grla. Disanje se kreće od dubokog ka plitkom i od brzog ka sporom u ponavljajućim ciklusima. Na kraju se usporava i postaje vrlo plitko, dolazi do pauza i konačno prestaje. Nekoliko minuta poslije srce će prestati kucati jer ostaje bez kisika, tjelesna temperatura pada, a koža postaje hladna i ljepljiva na dodir.
Repriza najboljih trenutaka?
Jedna snimka umirućeg mozga pak sugerira da ljudi možda imaju "reprizu" najboljih trenutaka u svojem životu u svojim posljednjim trenucima.
Skupina znanstvenika je, naime, proučavala moždane valove 87-godišnjeg pacijenta koji je bolovao od epilepsije pomoću uređaja za elektroencefalografiju (EEG), no on je usred pretrage doživio srčani udar koji je završio kobno, što je rezultiralo snimkama mozga koji umire. Na njima se vidjelo da su 30 sekundi prije prestanka rada srca moždani valovi pacijenta reagirali na isti način kao kad osoba sanja ili se nečega prisjeća. To se nastavilo i 30 sekundi nakon što je srce prestalo kucati, kad se pacijente obično već proglasi mrtvima.

Istraživanje je objavljeno u znanstvenom časopisu Frontiers in Aging Neuroscience, a koautor istraživanja dr. Ajmal Zemmar, neurokirurg na Sveučilištu u Louisvilleu, ponovio je kako su do otkrića došli sasvim slučajno. "Nismo planirali ovakav eksperiment, niti da ćemo te signale zabilježiti", naveo je.
Upitan znači li to da prije smrti vidimo trenutke provedene s bližnjima i druga radosna sjećanja, dr. Zemmar nije mogao dati odgovor.
"Iz filozofske perspektive, rekao bih da je vjerojatnije da će vas mozak prije vratiti u sretne trenutke nego u nesretne. No, ovisi o pojedincu čega će se tko prisjetiti", ocijenio je.
I druga studija, objavljena u znanstvenom časopisu Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, opisuje situaciju kad je kod dvoje ljudi kojima je dijagnosticirana moždana smrt i koji su bili isključeni s uređaja za održavanje života došlo do naglog skoka moždane aktivnosti.

Moždani valovi
Liječnici su u studiji analizirali slučajeve četiriju pacijenata koji su bili isključeni s aparata za održavanje života, a prof. dr. Jimo Borjigin, inače neurologinja, i njezin tim otkrili su kako su mozgovi dvoje pacijenata nakratko oživjeli neposredno prije smrti.
Konkretno, kod promatranih pacijenata utvrđen je iznenadni skok specifične vrste moždanih valova koji obično ukazuju na svjesno razmišljanje. Proizvodnja tih moždanih valova – zvanih gama-valovi – porasla je do tri stotine puta u odnosu na prethodne razine kod jednog pacijenta u trenucima prije smrti.
Obrasci gama-valova tih umirućih pacijenta dosegnuli su razine više od onih koje se nalaze u normalnom svjesnom mozgu. Prof. Borjing ocijenila je kako ostaje mogućnost da se "skrivena svijest", odnosno svjesno iskustvo koje trenutno ne možemo detektirati, nastavlja ispod površine te se, kako se približava smrt, pojavljuje burna aktivnost. To može biti adaptivni odgovor sličan naletu kognitivne aktivnosti koji budi spavača tijekom apneje – kad tijelu ponestane zraka, a mozak refleksno reagira kako bi dobio kisik.
