U 18. stoljeću, 10. listopada 1731. godine, rođen je Henry Cavendish, engleski kemičar i fizičar koji je došao do mnogih znanstvenih otkrića, ali, malo ih je objavio za života. Između ostalog otkrio je vodik, odnosno "nezapaljivi zrak", kako ga je nazvao. Utvrdio da voda nije kemijski element, kako se ranije držalo, nego spoj vodika i kisika, odredio je sastav zraka, izmjerio gustoću Zemlje još mnogo toga - samo usput, došao je do brojnih dragocjenih uvida na području meteorologije.

Srećom, bio je uredan i pedantno je vodio zabilješke svojih istraživanja, pa je u kasnom devetnaestom stoljeću, dugo nakon njegove smrti, James Clerk Maxwell pronašao je Cavendisheve radove.

Među njima je bio rukopis "Toplina", datiran između 1783. i 1790. koji opisuje "mehaničku teoriju topline".

Rukopis je stručno analiziran tek početkom 21. stoljeća a povjesničari znanosti drže da je to jedino djelo iz 18. stoljeća koje tumači termodinamiku te da je Cavendish tada "u suštini ispravno shvatio prirodu topline".

Ovaj genijalni znanstvenik ipak je život proživio gotovo kao pustinjak. Slabo se snalazio u kontaktima s drugim ljudima, međutim, golemo bogatstvo koje je naslijedio omogućilo mu je da se posveti znanstvenim istraživanjima i u tu svrhu uredi svoje kuće. Jedna, u Londonu bila je krcata knjigama, a druga, u predgrađu, postala je njegov laboratorij. U pomoćnoj zgradi u vrtu te kuće obavljao je eksperimente, a susjedi su tu zgradu pokazivali svojoj djeci i govorili im da je to mjesto na kome se mjeri svijet.

Tko zna, da je bio siromašan i jednako pametan, možda bi bio izvrgnut i ruglu, ali, bio je bogat i uz to mu je djed bio vojvoda od Devonshirea, bio je rodbinski povezan s čuvenim aristokratskim obiteljima, a svoje je podrijetlo mogao pratiti 800 godina unatrag, još od normanskih vremena. Stoga je bio rado viđen u društvu - kada bi uopće izašao iz kuće i blago nazvan osobenjakom. Do slave i priznanja nije mu nimalo bilo stalo.

Kolege su ga iznimno cijenile, ali, s njim je bilo teško razgovarati premda je bio aktivan u Vijeću Londonskog kraljevskog društva u koje je izabran 1765 godine. Zalazio je katkad i u svoj klub, ali ga je društvo zamaralo - radije bi se povukao u kakav mirni kutak.

Uopće, bilo mu je neugodno u društvu i izbjegavao ga je koliko je god je mogao.

Bio je u stanju razgovarati samo s jednom osobom u isto vrijeme, i to samo ako mu je ta osoba poznata i muškog spola. Žene su mu stvarale nelagodu, pa se, očekivano, nikada nije ni oženio a misli se i da nikada nije imao intimniji odnos s ženom.

Nije shvaćao smisao mode i nove odjeće - nosio je starinsko odijelo, bilo mu je važno da je funkcionalno.

Sa svojim sluškinjama komunicirao je samo putem pisanih poruka. Zabilježeno je da je svojoj kući dao dodati stražnje stubište kako bi izbjegao susret s domaćicom. Također, o njemu su se pripovijedale razne angdote, poput one da je svakoga dana jeo ovčetinu, čitavog života. U jednoj rijetkoj prilici kada je pozvao prijatelje na večeru, nova kuharica, koja nije bila upoznata s pravilom pisane komunikacije, zapitala je što će pripremiti. Znanstvenik se prvo jako uznemirio zbog razgovora, pa još sa ženom - a onda se pribrao i zamolio ovčji but. Ona je kazala da će to biti malo; a on je lakonski odgovorio - da pripremi dva.

Ove bilješke o Cavendishevom ponašanju zaintrigirale su suvremene znanstvenike i liječnike koji nagađaju da je imao Aspergerov sindrom, odnosno oblik autizma.

Aspergerov sindrom upravo karakteriziraju značajne poteškoće u socijalnoj interakciji i komunikaciji, zajedno s ograničenim i ponavljajućim obrascima ponašanja i interesa.

Tu bi se mogla uvrstiti i ovčetina koju je opetovano jeo. Ipak, doživio je 78 godina i jasno je da mu je kuharica morala dodati malo povrća ili drugih priloga, inače bi mnogo ranije umro. Dokazano je da čovjek ne može preživjeti hraneći se jednom namirnicom, jer uskoro nastupaju teške zdravstvene poteškoće.

Znanstvenik je za života trošio za opremanje svojih kuća, laboratorija i za izradu mjernih instrumenata i živio je vrlo udobno, ali, nakon njegove smrti ipak je ostalo glolemo bogatstvo, oko milijun funti sterlinga. Dobili su ih nećaci, s kojima je rijetko bio u kontaktu. Jedan od nasljednika ipak je financirao fizikalni laboratorij Sveučilišta u Cambridgeu i dao mu ime svog genijalnog rođaka.

U 18. stoljeću, 10. listopada 1731. godine, rođen je Henry Cavendish, engleski kemičar i fizičar koji je došao do mnogih znanstvenih otkrića, ali, malo ih je objavio za života. Između ostalog otkrio je vodik, odnosno "nezapaljivi zrak", kako ga je nazvao. Utvrdio da voda nije kemijski element, kako se ranije držalo, nego spoj vodika i kisika, odredio je sastav zraka, izmjerio gustoću Zemlje još mnogo toga - samo usput, došao je do brojnih dragocjenih uvida na području meteorologije.

Srećom, bio je uredan i pedantno je vodio zabilješke svojih istraživanja, pa je u kasnom devetnaestom stoljeću, dugo nakon njegove smrti, James Clerk Maxwell pronašao je Cavendisheve radove.

Među njima je bio rukopis "Toplina", datiran između 1783. i 1790. koji opisuje "mehaničku teoriju topline".

Rukopis je stručno analiziran tek početkom 21. stoljeća a povjesničari znanosti drže da je to jedino djelo iz 18. stoljeća koje tumači termodinamiku te da je Cavendish tada "u suštini ispravno shvatio prirodu topline".

Ovaj genijalni znanstvenik ipak je život proživio gotovo kao pustinjak. Slabo se snalazio u kontaktima s drugim ljudima, međutim, golemo bogatstvo koje je naslijedio omogućilo mu je da se posveti znanstvenim istraživanjima i u tu svrhu uredi svoje kuće. Jedna, u Londonu bila je krcata knjigama, a druga, u predgrađu, postala je njegov laboratorij. U pomoćnoj zgradi u vrtu te kuće obavljao je eksperimente, a susjedi su tu zgradu pokazivali svojoj djeci i govorili im da je to mjesto na kome se mjeri svijet.

Tko zna, da je bio siromašan i jednako pametan, možda bi bio izvrgnut i ruglu, ali, bio je bogat i uz to mu je djed bio vojvoda od Devonshirea, bio je rodbinski povezan s čuvenim aristokratskim obiteljima, a svoje je podrijetlo mogao pratiti 800 godina unatrag, još od normanskih vremena. Stoga je bio rado viđen u društvu - kada bi uopće izašao iz kuće i blago nazvan osobenjakom. Do slave i priznanja nije mu nimalo bilo stalo.

Kolege su ga iznimno cijenile, ali, s njim je bilo teško razgovarati premda je bio aktivan u Vijeću Londonskog kraljevskog društva u koje je izabran 1765 godine. Zalazio je katkad i u svoj klub, ali ga je društvo zamaralo - radije bi se povukao u kakav mirni kutak.

Uopće, bilo mu je neugodno u društvu i izbjegavao ga je koliko je god je mogao.

Bio je u stanju razgovarati samo s jednom osobom u isto vrijeme, i to samo ako mu je ta osoba poznata i muškog spola. Žene su mu stvarale nelagodu, pa se, očekivano, nikada nije ni oženio a misli se i da nikada nije imao intimniji odnos s ženom.

Nije shvaćao smisao mode i nove odjeće - nosio je starinsko odijelo, bilo mu je važno da je funkcionalno.

Sa svojim sluškinjama komunicirao je samo putem pisanih poruka. Zabilježeno je da je svojoj kući dao dodati stražnje stubište kako bi izbjegao susret s domaćicom. Također, o njemu su se pripovijedale razne angdote, poput one da je svakoga dana jeo ovčetinu, čitavog života. U jednoj rijetkoj prilici kada je pozvao prijatelje na večeru, nova kuharica, koja nije bila upoznata s pravilom pisane komunikacije, zapitala je što će pripremiti. Znanstvenik se prvo jako uznemirio zbog razgovora, pa još sa ženom - a onda se pribrao i zamolio ovčji but. Ona je kazala da će to biti malo; a on je lakonski odgovorio - da pripremi dva.

Ove bilješke o Cavendishevom ponašanju zaintrigirale su suvremene znanstvenike i liječnike koji nagađaju da je imao Aspergerov sindrom, odnosno oblik autizma.

Aspergerov sindrom upravo karakteriziraju značajne poteškoće u socijalnoj interakciji i komunikaciji, zajedno s ograničenim i ponavljajućim obrascima ponašanja i interesa.

Tu bi se mogla uvrstiti i ovčetina koju je opetovano jeo. Ipak, doživio je 78 godina i jasno je da mu je kuharica morala dodati malo povrća ili drugih priloga, inače bi mnogo ranije umro. Dokazano je da čovjek ne može preživjeti hraneći se jednom namirnicom, jer uskoro nastupaju teške zdravstvene poteškoće.

Znanstvenik je za života trošio za opremanje svojih kuća, laboratorija i za izradu mjernih instrumenata i živio je vrlo udobno, ali, nakon njegove smrti ipak je ostalo glolemo bogatstvo, oko milijun funti sterlinga. Dobili su ih nećaci, s kojima je rijetko bio u kontaktu. Jedan od nasljednika ipak je financirao fizikalni laboratorij Sveučilišta u Cambridgeu i dao mu ime svog genijalnog rođaka.
