Sportski film s pripadajućim klišejima osvježen je tako što su ga redatelj Reinaldo Marcus Green i scenarist Zach Baylin isprepleli s obiteljskom dramom i karakternom studijom. Zahvaljujući njima "Kralj Richard" ("King Richard") nije samo sportski biografski film o ranim danima teniskih sestara Williams, Venus i Sereni, već o njihovoj obitelji, s najvećim naglaskom na oca istaknutog u naslovu.

Richard Williams je u fokusu filma, glumi ga superzvjezdani Will Smith u ponajboljoj izvedbi karijere i mogao bi lako osvojiti treću nominaciju za Oscara nakon "Alija" i "Potrage za srećom". "Kralj Richard" je baš u duhu njegovih uloga u spomenutim naslovima, budući da Smith portretira tvrdoglavog, arogantnog, samopromotorskog, ali i fokusiranog čovjeka ("Ali") i siromašnog oca kojeg pokreće neizmjerna očinska ljubav i spreman je nadvladati svaku prepreku da pronađe sreću za djecu ("The Pursuit Of Happyness").

Film je gorkosladak, premda "crowd pleaser" slatkoća ipak prednjači nad gorčinom, no moglo je biti i drukčije s obzirom na to da su sestre Williams jedne od producenata i da je ovo "autorizirana verzija" njihova života.

Mogli smo, dakle, gledati većinski ružičasti "sports movie" o posvećenom ocu koji je znao da će mu kćeri "uzdrmati svijet" i njihovu usponu "od trnja do zvijezda". No, Green i Baylin se ne libe povremenih zalazaka u crnjake i prikaza Richarda u sve samo ne idealnom svjetlu, kao čovjeka punog mana, teške naravi, nagle ćudi, ponekad i sve samo ne dobrog oca, neovisno o njegovim dobrim namjerama, koji je znao slomiti srce kćerima i razočarati ih, recimo kad im nije više dao da igraju na juniorskim natjecanjima.

Prednost filma jest da u odnosu Richarda s kćerima Venus i Serenom (dobre Saniyya Sidney i Demi Singleton) postupno prerasta u zanimljivu dramu o roditeljstvu i odgoju djece, davajući važan prostor i njegovoj supruzi/njihovoj majci Brandi (Aunjanue L. Ellis, vrijedna nominacije za Oscara u kategoriji sporedne ženske uloge). Nijedan roditelj nije savršen i najbolji koliko god želio samo najbolje djeci, greške su neminovne u namjeri da se napravi prava stvar, ali bitno je uvidjeti ih na vrijeme i korigirati.

Tako, Richard gura Venus i Serenu do granica izdržljivosti, trenirajući ih i po kiši ako treba, uvjeren da ima "sljedeća dva Michaela Jordana", te izluđujući trenere da moraju igrati prema njegovim pravilima ("udaranje otvorenog stava"), da bi shvatio kako bi od pritisaka mogle "pregorjeti" ako prerano postanu profesionalke, poučen slučajem Jennifer Capriati i njezinim problemima sa zakonom.

Zato je prekinuo njihovo natjecanje na juniorskim natjecanjima, učio ih staromodnim vrijednostima da budu "skromne" i "čistog srca" na primjeru "Pepeljuge", dopuštao im da "budu djeca" i trudio se da ne zapostave školu ("moraju biti odlikašice"), što je za njih u danom trenutku moglo biti razočaravajuće, ali s odmakom vremena nešto što su sigurno cijenile. Treba na umu imati i kontekst vremena i prostora: sestre su odrastale krajem osamdesetih/početkom devedesetih u kalifornijskom Comptonu, kad je mladim crncima lako bilo završiti na ulici i popiti metak, od bandi ili policije.

Pozitivno je da je spomenuti kontekst samo naznačen u scenama Richardovih susreta s protuhama i prizoru policijske brutalnosti 1991. na TV-u, tako da film ne postaje još jedna angažirana drama u tom smislu, niti u pogledu diskriminirajućeg rasizma i klasizma koji je prevladavao u privilegiranim, elitnim klubovima pod egidom "bijeli sport, crne djevojčice", a ovo prvo je natuknuto i Williamsovim prisjećanjima na traume od Ku Klux Klana.

Iako se na momente vidi da su Green i Baylin sastavili plan filma prije snimanja, jednak "planu" koji je napravio otac za svoje kćeri prije nego što su se rodile, vidljivo je i da "King Richard" nije uvijek predvidljiv i odstupa od predviđenih smjernica sportskog žanra, pa makar završavao napetim i fino režiranim susretom 14-godišnje Venus i prvakinje svijeta Arantxe Sánchez Vicario.

U tom odstupanju, film neočekivano sijevne (glumačkom) ljudskošću, emotivnošću i dirljivošću tamo gdje nužno gledatelj ne bi očekivao, daleko od žanrovski obligatornih inspirativnih govora. Ponajbolja scena "Kralja Richarda", i jedna od glumački najboljih ove godine, dolazi u trenutku kad se Brandi suprotstavi mužu i suoči ga s činjenicom da odbija priznati kako se boji i skriva strah. Smithova iskrena ranjivost u toj i još jednoj sceni s Venus uzdiže njegovu ulogu iznad "Oscar bait" navlakuše.

Sportski film s pripadajućim klišejima osvježen je tako što su ga redatelj Reinaldo Marcus Green i scenarist Zach Baylin isprepleli s obiteljskom dramom i karakternom studijom. Zahvaljujući njima "Kralj Richard" ("King Richard") nije samo sportski biografski film o ranim danima teniskih sestara Williams, Venus i Sereni, već o njihovoj obitelji, s najvećim naglaskom na oca istaknutog u naslovu.

Richard Williams je u fokusu filma, glumi ga superzvjezdani Will Smith u ponajboljoj izvedbi karijere i mogao bi lako osvojiti treću nominaciju za Oscara nakon "Alija" i "Potrage za srećom". "Kralj Richard" je baš u duhu njegovih uloga u spomenutim naslovima, budući da Smith portretira tvrdoglavog, arogantnog, samopromotorskog, ali i fokusiranog čovjeka ("Ali") i siromašnog oca kojeg pokreće neizmjerna očinska ljubav i spreman je nadvladati svaku prepreku da pronađe sreću za djecu ("The Pursuit Of Happyness").

Film je gorkosladak, premda "crowd pleaser" slatkoća ipak prednjači nad gorčinom, no moglo je biti i drukčije s obzirom na to da su sestre Williams jedne od producenata i da je ovo "autorizirana verzija" njihova života.

Mogli smo, dakle, gledati većinski ružičasti "sports movie" o posvećenom ocu koji je znao da će mu kćeri "uzdrmati svijet" i njihovu usponu "od trnja do zvijezda". No, Green i Baylin se ne libe povremenih zalazaka u crnjake i prikaza Richarda u sve samo ne idealnom svjetlu, kao čovjeka punog mana, teške naravi, nagle ćudi, ponekad i sve samo ne dobrog oca, neovisno o njegovim dobrim namjerama, koji je znao slomiti srce kćerima i razočarati ih, recimo kad im nije više dao da igraju na juniorskim natjecanjima.

Prednost filma jest da u odnosu Richarda s kćerima Venus i Serenom (dobre Saniyya Sidney i Demi Singleton) postupno prerasta u zanimljivu dramu o roditeljstvu i odgoju djece, davajući važan prostor i njegovoj supruzi/njihovoj majci Brandi (Aunjanue L. Ellis, vrijedna nominacije za Oscara u kategoriji sporedne ženske uloge). Nijedan roditelj nije savršen i najbolji koliko god želio samo najbolje djeci, greške su neminovne u namjeri da se napravi prava stvar, ali bitno je uvidjeti ih na vrijeme i korigirati.

Tako, Richard gura Venus i Serenu do granica izdržljivosti, trenirajući ih i po kiši ako treba, uvjeren da ima "sljedeća dva Michaela Jordana", te izluđujući trenere da moraju igrati prema njegovim pravilima ("udaranje otvorenog stava"), da bi shvatio kako bi od pritisaka mogle "pregorjeti" ako prerano postanu profesionalke, poučen slučajem Jennifer Capriati i njezinim problemima sa zakonom.

Zato je prekinuo njihovo natjecanje na juniorskim natjecanjima, učio ih staromodnim vrijednostima da budu "skromne" i "čistog srca" na primjeru "Pepeljuge", dopuštao im da "budu djeca" i trudio se da ne zapostave školu ("moraju biti odlikašice"), što je za njih u danom trenutku moglo biti razočaravajuće, ali s odmakom vremena nešto što su sigurno cijenile. Treba na umu imati i kontekst vremena i prostora: sestre su odrastale krajem osamdesetih/početkom devedesetih u kalifornijskom Comptonu, kad je mladim crncima lako bilo završiti na ulici i popiti metak, od bandi ili policije.

Pozitivno je da je spomenuti kontekst samo naznačen u scenama Richardovih susreta s protuhama i prizoru policijske brutalnosti 1991. na TV-u, tako da film ne postaje još jedna angažirana drama u tom smislu, niti u pogledu diskriminirajućeg rasizma i klasizma koji je prevladavao u privilegiranim, elitnim klubovima pod egidom "bijeli sport, crne djevojčice", a ovo prvo je natuknuto i Williamsovim prisjećanjima na traume od Ku Klux Klana.

Iako se na momente vidi da su Green i Baylin sastavili plan filma prije snimanja, jednak "planu" koji je napravio otac za svoje kćeri prije nego što su se rodile, vidljivo je i da "King Richard" nije uvijek predvidljiv i odstupa od predviđenih smjernica sportskog žanra, pa makar završavao napetim i fino režiranim susretom 14-godišnje Venus i prvakinje svijeta Arantxe Sánchez Vicario.

U tom odstupanju, film neočekivano sijevne (glumačkom) ljudskošću, emotivnošću i dirljivošću tamo gdje nužno gledatelj ne bi očekivao, daleko od žanrovski obligatornih inspirativnih govora. Ponajbolja scena "Kralja Richarda", i jedna od glumački najboljih ove godine, dolazi u trenutku kad se Brandi suprotstavi mužu i suoči ga s činjenicom da odbija priznati kako se boji i skriva strah. Smithova iskrena ranjivost u toj i još jednoj sceni s Venus uzdiže njegovu ulogu iznad "Oscar bait" navlakuše.
