Gaf Willa Smitha na prošlotjednoj dodjeli Oscara u obliku šamara najveći je u karijeri popularnog glumca. Veći čak i od odabira "Divljeg zapada" ("Wild Wild West", 1999.) naspram "Matrixa". Naime, upravo je Smithu, zvijezdi "Zločestih dečkiju" i "Dana nezavisnosti", bila ponuđena glavna uloga u "Matrixu", samo on nije onda vjerovao u riskantnu SF akciju visokog "mind-bending" koncepta.

Smith je, zato, radije odlučio glumiti u novom filmu redatelja "Ljudi u crnom" Barryja Sonnenfelda, također u produkciji studija Warner Bros, naizgled sigurnijoj akcijskoj vestern komediji s elementima fantazije koja je remake istoimene serije, što je u devedesetima bio recept za kinohit ("Bjegunac", "Nemoguća misija", "Svetac").

Zanimljivo, Smithov lik James West u jednoj sceni "Divljeg zapada" kaže "To bi bila loša odluka u karijeri, dušo", obraćajući se prostitutki koja na njega misli potegnuti pištolj. S tom lošom odlukom Smith je samome sebi opalio šamar: "Matrix" je ispao revolucionarna filmčina i postao peti najgledaniji kinohit 1999., a "Wild Wild West" teška "flopčina" i našao se tek na 14. mjestu, iza niskobudžetne "Vještice iz Blaira".

"Divlji zapad" se pretvorio u jedan od kapitalnih financijskih promašaja devedesetih (222 milijuna u svjetskim kinima na budžet od 170) i redovito se nalazi u društvu filmova kao što su "Otok boje krvi", "Hudson Hawk", "Vodeni svijet" i "13. ratnik", ali i "Nepodnošljivi gnjavator", "Posljednji akcijski junak", "Na rubu horizonta", "Johnny Mnemonic", "Vojnik" i "Oči širom zatvorene".

Međutim, većina ovih filmova (osim "Johnnyja Mnemonica") nisu bili ni izbliza loši u realnom vremenu sukladno statusu krupnih promašaja, prije lošeg tajminga ili neshvaćeni. Naprotiv, imali su (i još imaju na današnje gledanje) neki staromodni šarm, modernu viziju ili uže/širežanrovsku subverziju.

Nažalost, "Wild Wild West" nema ništa od toga, jedva nešto sitno. Film je bio i ostao slabašan blockbuster s prerijetkim bljeskovima kreativnosti naspram čestih provala bizarnosti ili ekscentričnosti koje nisu simpatične kao što znaju biti u, primjerice, "Hudson Hawku".

Ovo je ustvari jedan ogledan primjerak hollywoodskog blockbusterskog ekscesa pod ravnanjem Jona Petersa, bivšeg frizera koji je postao megaproducent i česti suradnik Warner Brosa ("Unutarnji svemir", "Kišni čovjek", "Batman", "Tango i Cash", "Batman se vraća"), a krajem devedesetih malčice izgubio busolu.

Kad se sjetimo Petersa iz nedavnog filma "Licorice Pizza", u pomaknutom tumačenju Bradleyja Coopera, stvari nam postaju malo jasnije. U tom periodu, Peters je planirao producirati novi blockbuster o Čovjeku od čelika u režiji Tima Burtona i s Nicolasom Cageom u glavnoj ulozi, radnog naslova "Superman Lives".

Jedan od njegovih zahtjeva bio je da se Superman u završnici mora boriti s divovskim paukom. "Superman Lives" se na kraju nije snimio, no Petersen je ubacio divovskog pauka u "Divlji zapad", točnije tarantulu od 25 metara kao mehaničku kreaciju "konfederacijskog" negativca Arlissa Lovelessa (Kenneth Branagh) koji je naumio smaknuti američkog predsjednika Ulyssesa S. Granta i razdijeliti Ameriku.

U uvodnoj sceni neki unezvjereni čovjek bježi kroz noć s neobičnim ovratnikom za vratom i govori "on je luđak" (Loveless, ali i Petersen), "moram upozoriti predsjednika", "divovski pauk", najavljujući sve što nas čeka u filmu. Uvodna špica u stilu špageti vesterna, poput "Za šaku dolara" i "Dobar, loš, zao", prilično obećava, no obećanje se uskoro pokazuje kao ludom radovanje.

Prva scena je još razmjerno zabavna. West se mazi s nekom zgodnom djevojkom iščekujući dolazak negativaca i nastavlja ljubiti zrak umjesto njezinih usana zaokupljen drugim zbivanjima. Nakon toga, West upada među negativce "kao od majke rođen" i Sonnenfeld uokviruje negativce kroz njegove gole noge, subvertirajući slična kadriranja iz mnogih vesterna.

Predstavljanje Westovog budućeg partnera, majstora prerušavanja i izumitelja Artemusa Gordona (Kevin Kline), vrlo brzo skreće u grotesku i bizarluk, nakon što on, prerušen u prostitutku, zavede Lovelessova generala McGratha (Ted Levine; "Kad jaganjci utihnu").

Nije dovoljno da McGrath ima slušni aparat u vidu male trube pričvršćene za uho i jednako je groteskan kao Loveless koji, uzgred, nema noge i donju polovicu tijela, digitalno uklonjene po uzoru na lik poručnika Dana u "Forrestu Gumpu". Gordon potom hipnotizira tog i takvog generala, toliko da ga ovaj sluša kao pas i počne lajati.

U pokušaju da nastavi revitalizaciju pokojnog žanra vesterna u devedesetima ("Ples s vukovima", "Nepomirljivi") na nekonvencionalni način, kakav je u žanru prisutan još od "Butcha Cassidyja i Sundance Kida", Sonnenfeld ubija "Wild Wild West" takvim scenama da se pokojni John Ford vjerojatno okreće u grobu, posebice nakon prizora uništavanja Doline spomenika.

Nijedan film se ne bi mogao povratiti nakon toga i sve dalje je lajanje na mjesec ili šamaranje mrtvog konja. Možda bi se i povratio da Smith ima akcijsko-komičnu "buddy" kemiju s Klineom kao s Tommyjem Leejem Jonesom u "Men In Black" ili da je Sonnenfeld bolje pospojio kauboje i fantaziju "steampunk" estetike kakvom se umješnije okoristio Terry Gilliam u "Brazilu", a koja inače baš i nema sreće na filmu ("Družba pravih gentlemana", "Smrtonosni strojevi").

Sonnenfeld se pokušava sprdati s "buddy" homoerotikom pa Gordon nagovara Westa da popipa njegove umjetne grudi za prerušavanje, što kad netko sluša sa strane odašilje gay konotacije, a uvodi i ljubavni trokut s Ritom (Salma Hayek; "Desperado", "Od sumraka do zore") koja je svedena na to da bude predmet seksističke igre riječi tipa "dašak svježeg dupeta" i "dojka svježeg zraka", iako će Jim zasvirati bubnjeve na grudima neke druge žene, ne njezinima.

Scene s dvojcem minimalno su smiješne jer među njima nedostaje kemije dok, tipično za "buddy" par, moraju ostaviti po strani razmirice da zaustave negativca. Ponaosob su Gordon i West neloše karakterno postavljeni kao sušte suprotnosti, posebice potonji – "trigger happy" junak s pristupom "najprije pucaj, pucaj i kasnije, pucaj još malo, a onda kad su svi mrtvi probaj postaviti koje pitanje", barem dok se i sam ne preruši u trbušnu plesačicu.

No, njihova interakcija u komediji i akciji biva testirana u nizu redikuloznih scena, recimo kad završe s magnetskim ovratnicima na glavi (svojevrsne "steampunk" verzije ogrlica iz "Trkača" i "Bračne spone") te pokušavaju pobjeći od letećih cirkulara u kukuruzište dok kamera Michaela Ballhausa vrluda zrakom kao kad je njome nekoć sam upravljao Sonnenfeld snimajući "Arizona Junior" braće Coen.

Finalna akcija s paukom dojmljive mehanike i hidraulike, čiji dolazak na scenu Sonenfeld draži kao Spielberg T-Rexov u "Jurskom parku" (drhtavi klin na tračnici kao podrhtavanje vode u čaši), umije biti spektakularna, a sama završnica subverzivna. Kauboji West i Gordon odlaze u zalazak sunca jašući na mehaničkom pauku, ali prekasno da "Divlji zapad" oživi. Konj je već mrtav.

Smith odbio i Tarantinova 'Djanga'

Vestern je znao biti predmet visokog SF-ovskog koncepta, kao npr. u "Kaubojima i izvanzemaljcima", a Kevin Kline je u ovom filmu drugi put igrao dvojnika predsjednika Amerike i samog predsjednika nakon komedije "Dave". Zanimljivo, Will Smith je odbio i glavnu ulogu u Tarantinovu vesternu "Odbjegli Django".

Gaf Willa Smitha na prošlotjednoj dodjeli Oscara u obliku šamara najveći je u karijeri popularnog glumca. Veći čak i od odabira "Divljeg zapada" ("Wild Wild West", 1999.) naspram "Matrixa". Naime, upravo je Smithu, zvijezdi "Zločestih dečkiju" i "Dana nezavisnosti", bila ponuđena glavna uloga u "Matrixu", samo on nije onda vjerovao u riskantnu SF akciju visokog "mind-bending" koncepta.

Smith je, zato, radije odlučio glumiti u novom filmu redatelja "Ljudi u crnom" Barryja Sonnenfelda, također u produkciji studija Warner Bros, naizgled sigurnijoj akcijskoj vestern komediji s elementima fantazije koja je remake istoimene serije, što je u devedesetima bio recept za kinohit ("Bjegunac", "Nemoguća misija", "Svetac").

Zanimljivo, Smithov lik James West u jednoj sceni "Divljeg zapada" kaže "To bi bila loša odluka u karijeri, dušo", obraćajući se prostitutki koja na njega misli potegnuti pištolj. S tom lošom odlukom Smith je samome sebi opalio šamar: "Matrix" je ispao revolucionarna filmčina i postao peti najgledaniji kinohit 1999., a "Wild Wild West" teška "flopčina" i našao se tek na 14. mjestu, iza niskobudžetne "Vještice iz Blaira".

"Divlji zapad" se pretvorio u jedan od kapitalnih financijskih promašaja devedesetih (222 milijuna u svjetskim kinima na budžet od 170) i redovito se nalazi u društvu filmova kao što su "Otok boje krvi", "Hudson Hawk", "Vodeni svijet" i "13. ratnik", ali i "Nepodnošljivi gnjavator", "Posljednji akcijski junak", "Na rubu horizonta", "Johnny Mnemonic", "Vojnik" i "Oči širom zatvorene".

Međutim, većina ovih filmova (osim "Johnnyja Mnemonica") nisu bili ni izbliza loši u realnom vremenu sukladno statusu krupnih promašaja, prije lošeg tajminga ili neshvaćeni. Naprotiv, imali su (i još imaju na današnje gledanje) neki staromodni šarm, modernu viziju ili uže/širežanrovsku subverziju.

Nažalost, "Wild Wild West" nema ništa od toga, jedva nešto sitno. Film je bio i ostao slabašan blockbuster s prerijetkim bljeskovima kreativnosti naspram čestih provala bizarnosti ili ekscentričnosti koje nisu simpatične kao što znaju biti u, primjerice, "Hudson Hawku".

Ovo je ustvari jedan ogledan primjerak hollywoodskog blockbusterskog ekscesa pod ravnanjem Jona Petersa, bivšeg frizera koji je postao megaproducent i česti suradnik Warner Brosa ("Unutarnji svemir", "Kišni čovjek", "Batman", "Tango i Cash", "Batman se vraća"), a krajem devedesetih malčice izgubio busolu.

Kad se sjetimo Petersa iz nedavnog filma "Licorice Pizza", u pomaknutom tumačenju Bradleyja Coopera, stvari nam postaju malo jasnije. U tom periodu, Peters je planirao producirati novi blockbuster o Čovjeku od čelika u režiji Tima Burtona i s Nicolasom Cageom u glavnoj ulozi, radnog naslova "Superman Lives".

Jedan od njegovih zahtjeva bio je da se Superman u završnici mora boriti s divovskim paukom. "Superman Lives" se na kraju nije snimio, no Petersen je ubacio divovskog pauka u "Divlji zapad", točnije tarantulu od 25 metara kao mehaničku kreaciju "konfederacijskog" negativca Arlissa Lovelessa (Kenneth Branagh) koji je naumio smaknuti američkog predsjednika Ulyssesa S. Granta i razdijeliti Ameriku.

U uvodnoj sceni neki unezvjereni čovjek bježi kroz noć s neobičnim ovratnikom za vratom i govori "on je luđak" (Loveless, ali i Petersen), "moram upozoriti predsjednika", "divovski pauk", najavljujući sve što nas čeka u filmu. Uvodna špica u stilu špageti vesterna, poput "Za šaku dolara" i "Dobar, loš, zao", prilično obećava, no obećanje se uskoro pokazuje kao ludom radovanje.

Prva scena je još razmjerno zabavna. West se mazi s nekom zgodnom djevojkom iščekujući dolazak negativaca i nastavlja ljubiti zrak umjesto njezinih usana zaokupljen drugim zbivanjima. Nakon toga, West upada među negativce "kao od majke rođen" i Sonnenfeld uokviruje negativce kroz njegove gole noge, subvertirajući slična kadriranja iz mnogih vesterna.

Predstavljanje Westovog budućeg partnera, majstora prerušavanja i izumitelja Artemusa Gordona (Kevin Kline), vrlo brzo skreće u grotesku i bizarluk, nakon što on, prerušen u prostitutku, zavede Lovelessova generala McGratha (Ted Levine; "Kad jaganjci utihnu").

Nije dovoljno da McGrath ima slušni aparat u vidu male trube pričvršćene za uho i jednako je groteskan kao Loveless koji, uzgred, nema noge i donju polovicu tijela, digitalno uklonjene po uzoru na lik poručnika Dana u "Forrestu Gumpu". Gordon potom hipnotizira tog i takvog generala, toliko da ga ovaj sluša kao pas i počne lajati.

U pokušaju da nastavi revitalizaciju pokojnog žanra vesterna u devedesetima ("Ples s vukovima", "Nepomirljivi") na nekonvencionalni način, kakav je u žanru prisutan još od "Butcha Cassidyja i Sundance Kida", Sonnenfeld ubija "Wild Wild West" takvim scenama da se pokojni John Ford vjerojatno okreće u grobu, posebice nakon prizora uništavanja Doline spomenika.

Nijedan film se ne bi mogao povratiti nakon toga i sve dalje je lajanje na mjesec ili šamaranje mrtvog konja. Možda bi se i povratio da Smith ima akcijsko-komičnu "buddy" kemiju s Klineom kao s Tommyjem Leejem Jonesom u "Men In Black" ili da je Sonnenfeld bolje pospojio kauboje i fantaziju "steampunk" estetike kakvom se umješnije okoristio Terry Gilliam u "Brazilu", a koja inače baš i nema sreće na filmu ("Družba pravih gentlemana", "Smrtonosni strojevi").

Sonnenfeld se pokušava sprdati s "buddy" homoerotikom pa Gordon nagovara Westa da popipa njegove umjetne grudi za prerušavanje, što kad netko sluša sa strane odašilje gay konotacije, a uvodi i ljubavni trokut s Ritom (Salma Hayek; "Desperado", "Od sumraka do zore") koja je svedena na to da bude predmet seksističke igre riječi tipa "dašak svježeg dupeta" i "dojka svježeg zraka", iako će Jim zasvirati bubnjeve na grudima neke druge žene, ne njezinima.

Scene s dvojcem minimalno su smiješne jer među njima nedostaje kemije dok, tipično za "buddy" par, moraju ostaviti po strani razmirice da zaustave negativca. Ponaosob su Gordon i West neloše karakterno postavljeni kao sušte suprotnosti, posebice potonji – "trigger happy" junak s pristupom "najprije pucaj, pucaj i kasnije, pucaj još malo, a onda kad su svi mrtvi probaj postaviti koje pitanje", barem dok se i sam ne preruši u trbušnu plesačicu.

No, njihova interakcija u komediji i akciji biva testirana u nizu redikuloznih scena, recimo kad završe s magnetskim ovratnicima na glavi (svojevrsne "steampunk" verzije ogrlica iz "Trkača" i "Bračne spone") te pokušavaju pobjeći od letećih cirkulara u kukuruzište dok kamera Michaela Ballhausa vrluda zrakom kao kad je njome nekoć sam upravljao Sonnenfeld snimajući "Arizona Junior" braće Coen.

Finalna akcija s paukom dojmljive mehanike i hidraulike, čiji dolazak na scenu Sonenfeld draži kao Spielberg T-Rexov u "Jurskom parku" (drhtavi klin na tračnici kao podrhtavanje vode u čaši), umije biti spektakularna, a sama završnica subverzivna. Kauboji West i Gordon odlaze u zalazak sunca jašući na mehaničkom pauku, ali prekasno da "Divlji zapad" oživi. Konj je već mrtav.

Smith odbio i Tarantinova 'Djanga'

Vestern je znao biti predmet visokog SF-ovskog koncepta, kao npr. u "Kaubojima i izvanzemaljcima", a Kevin Kline je u ovom filmu drugi put igrao dvojnika predsjednika Amerike i samog predsjednika nakon komedije "Dave". Zanimljivo, Will Smith je odbio i glavnu ulogu u Tarantinovu vesternu "Odbjegli Django".

‘Divlji zapad‘: Šamaranje mrtvog konja

Gaf Willa Smitha na prošlotjednoj dodjeli Oscara u obliku šamara najveći je u karijeri popularnog glumca. Veći čak i od odabira "Divljeg zapada" ("Wild Wild West", 1999.) naspram "Matrixa". Naime, upravo je Smithu, zvijezdi "Zločestih dečkiju" i "Dana nezavisnosti", bila ponuđena glavna uloga u "Matrixu", samo on nije onda vjerovao u riskantnu SF akciju visokog "mind-bending" koncepta.

Smith je, zato, radije odlučio glumiti u novom filmu redatelja "Ljudi u crnom" Barryja Sonnenfelda, također u produkciji studija Warner Bros, naizgled sigurnijoj akcijskoj vestern komediji s elementima fantazije koja je remake istoimene serije, što je u devedesetima bio recept za kinohit ("Bjegunac", "Nemoguća misija", "Svetac").

Zanimljivo, Smithov lik James West u jednoj sceni "Divljeg zapada"...
