Vlasnici mačaka izloženi su većem riziku da su u starosti budu slabijeg zdravlja, pokazuje nova studija. Istraživači u SAD-u i Španjolskoj uzeli su uzorke krvi od 600 osoba starijih od 65 godina i otkrili da dvije trećine tijekom života bile zaražene parazitom kojeg, između ostalog, šire i mačke. T. gondii se razmnožava u crijevima mačaka, što znači da su vlasnici zaraženih mačaka izloženi riziku da se zaraze onda kad čiste mačji wc. No, postoji veoma jednostavan i lak način na koji se može boriti protiv zaraze - tako što nakon prtljanja po mačjem pijesku ili peletima vlasnici jednostavno operu ruke. Reklo bi se da je to zdravorazumski postupak, no broj zaraženih pokazuje da nije.

Jasno, ne dolazi ovaj parazit samo od mačaka. Veća je šansa da će ga netko ‘pokupiti‘ jedući meso koje nije dovoljno termički obrađeno ili povrće i voće nije oprano prije konzumacije. No, uglavnom se zbog ovog parazita optužuju mačke, premda je jasno da u vezi njih postoji isključivo jedan način zaraze, koji se lako izbjegne.

Rezultati istraživanja su objavljeni u The Journals of Gerontology i oni pokazuju da je 67 posto ispitanika u krvi imalo markere latentne infekcije T. gondii. Oni koji su imali veću koncentraciju antitijela na parazita imali su znatno veću vjerojatnost da će biti slabi, smatraju znanstvenici.

Vlasnici mačaka izloženi su većem riziku da su u starosti budu slabijeg zdravlja, pokazuje nova studija. Istraživači u SAD-u i Španjolskoj uzeli su uzorke krvi od 600 osoba starijih od 65 godina i otkrili da dvije trećine tijekom života bile zaražene parazitom kojeg, između ostalog, šire i mačke.
