Prema novom istraživanju, ocean sadrži goleme rezerve šećera kojih nikada nismo bili svjesni.

Znanstvenici su otkrili da livade morske trave na dnu oceana mogu pohraniti ogromne količine slatkih stvari ispod svojih vijugavih listova – a postoje velike implikacije za skladištenje ugljika i klimatske promjene, piše scientalert.

Šećer dolazi u obliku saharoze (glavnog sastojka šećera koji se koristi u kuhinji), a oslobađa se iz morske trave u tlo ispod, područje na koje izravno utječe korijenje, poznato kao rizosfera. To znači da su koncentracije šećera na morskom dnu oko 80 puta veće nego što bi bile uobičajene.

Širom svijeta, morske trave mogle bi se nalaziti na do 1,3 milijuna tona saharoze, kaže istraživački tim. Drugim riječima, to je dovoljno za oko 32 milijarde limenki Coca-Cole, tako da govorimo o značajnom pronalasku skrivenog šećera.

Istraživači su testirali svoju hipotezu u stvarnom podvodnom polju morske trave kako bi potvrdili da se to doista događa, pomoću tehnike masene spektrometrije.

- U našim eksperimentima dodali smo fenole izolirane iz morske trave mikroorganizmima u rizosferi morske trave, kaže morska mikrobiologinja Maggie Sogin s Instituta Max Planck za mikrobiologiju mora.

I doista, konzumiralo se mnogo manje saharoze u usporedbi s onim kada nisu bili prisutni fenoli.

Mali skup mikroba zapravo je uspijevao na saharozi unatoč prisutnosti fenola: istraživači misle da ti "specijalisti za mikrobe" možda daju nešto zauzvrat morskoj travi, poput hranjivih tvari koje su im potrebne za rast.

Prema novom istraživanju, ocean sadrži goleme rezerve šećera kojih nikada nismo bili svjesni.

Znanstvenici su otkrili da livade morske trave na dnu oceana mogu pohraniti ogromne količine slatkih stvari ispod svojih vijugavih listova – a postoje velike implikacije za skladištenje ugljika i klimatske promjene, piše scientalert.

Šećer dolazi u obliku saharoze (glavnog sastojka šećera koji se koristi u kuhinji), a oslobađa se iz morske trave u tlo ispod, područje na koje izravno utječe korijenje, poznato kao rizosfera. To znači da su koncentracije šećera na morskom dnu oko 80 puta veće nego što bi bile uobičajene.

Širom svijeta, morske trave mogle bi se nalaziti na do 1,3 milijuna tona saharoze, kaže istraživački tim. Drugim riječima, to je dovoljno za oko 32 milijarde limenki Coca-Cole, tako da govorimo o značajnom pronalasku skrivenog šećera.

- Morske trave proizvode šećer tijekom fotosinteze, kaže morska mikrobiologinja Nicole Dubilier s Instituta Max Planck za mikrobiologiju mora u Njemačkoj.

- U prosječnim svjetlosnim uvjetima, ove biljke koriste većinu šećera koje proizvode za vlastiti metabolizam i rast. Ali pod uvjetima jakog osvjetljenja, na primjer u podne ili tijekom ljeta, biljke proizvode više šećera nego što mogu iskoristiti ili uskladištiti. Zatim otpuštaju višak saharoze u svoju rizosferu. Ono što je iznenađujuće je da taj višak šećera ne progutaju mikroorganizmi u okolnom okolišu. Kako bi to spriječile, čini se da morske trave šalju fenolne spojeve na isti način kao i mnoge druge biljke.

Ovi kemijski spojevi – koji se nalaze u crnom vinu, kavi i voću, kao i na mnogim drugim mjestima u prirodi – su antimikrobni lijekovi koji inhibiraju metabolizam većine mikroorganizama, usporavajući ih.

Istraživači su testirali svoju hipotezu u stvarnom podvodnom polju morske trave kako bi potvrdili da se to doista događa, pomoću tehnike masene spektrometrije.

- U našim eksperimentima dodali smo fenole izolirane iz morske trave mikroorganizmima u rizosferi morske trave, kaže morska mikrobiologinja Maggie Sogin s Instituta Max Planck za mikrobiologiju mora.

I doista, konzumiralo se mnogo manje saharoze u usporedbi s onim kada nisu bili prisutni fenoli.

Prema novom istraživanju, ocean sadrži goleme rezerve šećera kojih nikada nismo bili svjesni.

Znanstvenici su otkrili da livade morske trave na dnu oceana mogu pohraniti ogromne količine slatkih stvari ispod svojih vijugavih listova – a postoje velike implikacije za skladištenje ugljika i klimatske promjene, piše scientalert.

Šećer dolazi u obliku saharoze (glavnog sastojka šećera koji se koristi u kuhinji), a oslobađa se iz morske trave u tlo ispod, područje na koje izravno utječe korijenje, poznato kao rizosfera. To znači da su koncentracije šećera na morskom dnu oko 80 puta veće nego što bi bile uobičajene.

Širom svijeta, morske trave mogle bi se nalaziti na do 1,3 milijuna tona saharoze, kaže istraživački tim. Drugim riječima, to je dovoljno za oko 32 milijarde limenki Coca-Cole, tako da govorimo o značajnom pronalasku skrivenog šećera.

- Morske trave proizvode šećer tijekom fotosinteze, kaže morska mikrobiologinja Nicole Dubilier s Instituta Max Planck za mikrobiologiju mora u Njemačkoj.

- U prosječnim svjetlosnim uvjetima, ove biljke koriste većinu šećera koje proizvode za vlastiti metabolizam i rast. Ali pod uvjetima jakog osvjetljenja, na primjer u podne ili tijekom ljeta, biljke proizvode više šećera nego što mogu iskoristiti ili uskladištiti. Zatim otpuštaju višak saharoze u svoju rizosferu. Ono što je iznenađujuće je da taj višak šećera ne progutaju mikroorganizmi u okolnom okolišu. Kako bi to spriječile, čini se da morske trave šalju fenolne spojeve na isti način kao i mnoge druge biljke.

Ovi kemijski spojevi – koji se nalaze u crnom vinu, kavi i voću, kao i na mnogim drugim mjestima u prirodi – su antimikrobni lijekovi koji inhibiraju metabolizam većine mikroorganizama, usporavajući ih.

Istraživači su testirali svoju hipotezu u stvarnom podvodnom polju morske trave kako bi potvrdili da se to doista događa, pomoću tehnike masene spektrometrije.

- U našim eksperimentima dodali smo fenole izolirane iz morske trave mikroorganizmima u rizosferi morske trave, kaže morska mikrobiologinja Maggie Sogin s Instituta Max Planck za mikrobiologiju mora.
