Banksy je ponudio da prikupi milijune funti za kupnju zatvora Reading, gdje je Oscar Wilde nekoć bio smješten, kako bi se on mogao pretvoriti u umjetnički centar. Ulični umjetnik obećao je da će platiti traženu cijenu od 10 milijuna funti prodajom šablona koji je koristio za slikanje na toj zgradi koja je uvrštena na popis 2. razreda baštine u ožujku, što je potez za koji se aktivisti nadaju da će spriječiti njenu prodaju investitorima.

Glumci Judi Dench, Sir Kenneth Branagh, Kate Winslet i Natalie Dormer među zvijezdama su koje su dale podršku kampanji pretvaranja zatvora u kulturni centar.
Wilde je držan u zatvoru između 1895. i 1897. nakon što je bio osuđen za grubu nepristojnost kada je razotkrivena njegova afera s lordom Alfredom Douglasom.
Dok je bio u zatvoru, napisao je De Profundis, pismo svojoj bivšoj ljubavnici, a nakon puštanja na slobodu ispričao je svoje vrijeme u The Ballad of Reading Gaol. Zatvor je sagrađen na mjestu srednjovjekovne opatije Reading, samostana kojeg je utemeljio Henrik I. Toby Davies, umjetnički direktor kazališta Rabble u Readingu, rekao je da bi bilo kriminalno da Ministarstvo pravosuđa odbije ponudu umjetnika. 'Banksy nudi nevjerojatan iznos novca koji će ići izravno Ministarstvu pravde za javnu dobrobit. Njegova ponuda je fenomenalna i ako Ministarstvo pravde to odbije onda smatram da je to kazneno djelo.'
Jason Brock, čelnik vijeća, pozdravio je pažnju koju je Banksyjev interes za zatvor Reading privukao na prodaju. Banksy je ponudio da prikupi milijune funti za kupnju zatvora Reading, gdje je Oscar Wilde nekoć bio smješten, kako bi se on mogao pretvoriti u umjetnički centar. Ulični umjetnik obećao je da će platiti traženu cijenu od 10 milijuna funti prodajom šablona koji je koristio za slikanje na toj zgradi koja je uvrštena na popis 2. razreda baštine u ožujku, što je potez za koji se aktivisti nadaju da će spriječiti njenu prodaju investitorima.
Umjetnik sa sjedištem u Bristolu rekao je da je Wilde 'svetac zaštitnik razbijanja dviju suprotstavljenih ideja kako bi se stvorila magija', dodajući: 'Pretvaranje mjesta koje ga je uništilo u utočište za umjetnost toliko je savršeno da to moramo učiniti.'
Banksyjev mural prikazivao je lika, vjerojatno slavnog pisca, kako se s pisaćom mašinom spušta po fasadi s plahtom. Šablona je bila izložena u bristolskom muzeju i umjetničkoj galeriji ranije ovog mjeseca u sklopu izložbe umjetnika Graysona Perryja za njegovu seriju Channel 4 Grayson’s Art Club. Glumci Judi Dench, Sir Kenneth Branagh, Kate Winslet i Natalie Dormer među zvijezdama su koje su dale podršku kampanji pretvaranja zatvora u kulturni centar.
Wilde je držan u zatvoru između 1895. i 1897. nakon što je bio osuđen za grubu nepristojnost kada je razotkrivena njegova afera s lordom Alfredom Douglasom.
Dok je bio u zatvoru, napisao je De Profundis, pismo svojoj bivšoj ljubavnici, a nakon puštanja na slobodu ispričao je svoje vrijeme u The Ballad of Reading Gaol. Zatvor je sagrađen na mjestu srednjovjekovne opatije Reading, samostana kojeg je utemeljio Henrik I. Vjeruje se da je Henry bio pokopan ispod oltara, koji sada leži ispod zatvorskog parkirališta ili zidova.

Matt Rodda, laburistički zastupnik za Reading East, rekao je da je koncept korištenja zatvora za smještaj umjetnosti opravdan prošlim izložbama, dodajući da planira pokrenuti to hitno pitanje u parlamentu ovog tjedna kako bi ministre 'na licu mjesta' suočili s ponudom .
'Postoje ti nevjerojatni slojevi povijesti - tu je povijest književnosti i povijest LGBT zajednice, te poveznica s Oscarom Wildeom', rekao je. 'Ali postoji i neka lokalna i nacionalna viktorijanska društvena povijest i veza s kraljevskom obitelji sve u jednoj zgradi i tako je dobro povezana s ostatkom zemlje. Iz toliko razloga apsolutno je ispravno da je ova zgrada sačuvana i korištena na konstruktivan način, a ne da se samo uništi i pretvori u stanove ili nešto drugo.'
Toby Davies, umjetnički direktor kazališta Rabble u Readingu, rekao je da bi bilo kriminalno da Ministarstvo pravosuđa odbije ponudu umjetnika. 'Banksy nudi nevjerojatan iznos novca koji će ići izravno Ministarstvu pravde za javnu dobrobit. Njegova ponuda je fenomenalna i ako Ministarstvo pravde to odbije onda smatram da je to kazneno djelo.'
Jason Brock, čelnik vijeća, pozdravio je pažnju koju je Banksyjev interes za zatvor Reading privukao na prodaju. 'Vijeće je do danas imalo samo neformalne pristupe Banksyjevih predstavnika, ali nije bilo detaljnih rasprava', rekao je Brock. 'Naša ponuda ostaje čvrsto na stolu i ima široku podršku – kako unutar zajednice ovdje u Readingu, tako i šire umjetničke i kulturne zajednice – od kojih svi prepoznaju ogromnu povijesnu i kulturnu vrijednost zatvora.'
