U nedjelju je prvi put prošao kvalifikacije ATP turnira, a u ponedjeljak je u uobičajeno vrijeme, od devet ujutro, započeo svoj radni tjedan na tržištu kapitala. Malo je tenisač, malo direktor u podružnici tvrtke vrijedne četiri milijarde dolara. Filmska je to priča Matije Pecotića, 784. igrača svijeta, koji je prošlog mjeseca predstavljao hrvatske boje na United Cupu u Australiji - pišu Sportske novosti.

Nevjerojatan paralelni život 33-godišnjaka došao je u fokus nakon što je u dva dana pobijedio dvojicu Amerikanaca čija imena itekako odzvanjaju u teniskim krugovima, Stefana Kozlova i Tennysa Sandgrena. Pobjede su mu otvorile vrata glavnog turnira, u kojem večeras igra protiv Jacka Socka. Slobodan dan na poslu, međutim, nije si mogao priuštiti. Uoči okršaja s bivšim Top 10 igračem, Pecotić se cijeli dan bavio brojkama i transakcijama.

- Kako je bilo proći kvalifikacije? Samo trenutak nevjerice. Uživam i guram dokle mogu. Ako ne uspijem, vratit ću se na posao! - izjavio je za ATP.

Teško je reći koji detalj iz njegove biografije više fascinira. Na Pecotićevom LinkedIn profilu stoji da je od 2013. profesionalni tenisač na Touru, a od 2021. je direktor u kompaniji Wexford Real Estate Investors, koja upravlja portfeljem nekretnina i posluje na 20-ak tržišta u SAD-u i Kanadi.

Osam mjeseci bio prikovan uz krevet

Rođen je u Beogradu, a kao trogodišnjak je s roditeljima, ortopedom Goranom i poznatom psihologinjom Lidijom, preselio na Maltu, gdje se zaljubio u tenis jer ga je otac igrao rekreativno. U srednjoj školi je bio najbolji učenik u matematici i ekonomiji, a onda s Malte preselio u Ameriku, na Sveučilište Princeton. Tenis je u početku bio u drugom planu, sve do četvrte godine kad je briljirao u Sveučilišnoj teniskoj ligi (NCAA), ostvarivši najbolju sezonu Princetona u zadnjih 50 godina. Čak tri puta izabran je za tenisača godine Ivy League, došao je i do broja dva sveučilišne ljestvice, što je bio okidač da se ozbiljnije posveti sportu.

I taman kad se počeo probijati na ATP Touru i kad je stigao na prag ulaska u top 200, uoči Australian Opena 2016. zaustavila ga je operacija bruha, tijekom koje je imao tešku alergijsku reakciju na anesteziju.

- Bio sam prikovan za krevet osam mjeseci. To je promijenilo putanju mojeg teniskog puta i cijele karijere - kaže Pecotić, koji je ljevak i najveća mu je inspiracija Rafa Nadal.

Zdravstvene poteškoće nisu ga pokolebale, naprotiv. Iskoristio je višak vremena i opet se posvetio učenju te nakon diplome na Princetonu (politika i financije) otišao na Harvard Business School, gdje je završio MBA. U dvojbi između profesionalnog tenisa ili poslovne karijere, kaže, izabrao je drugo, premda podvig u Delray Beachu pokazuje da ga teniski još ne treba otpisivati.

- Apsolutno volim ovu igru i znam da neću trajati zauvijek, ipak su mi 33 godine. Pokušavam iskoristiti svaki dan. Kad god stignem, trudim se trenirati svako jutro, pet, šest puta tjedno. Nekad treniram i sa svojim šefom koji ima 70 godina. Ovaj tjedan sam trenirao s tipom koji je u kasnim 50-ima. Katkad morate biti kreativni - objašnjava.

Ponude s Wall Streeta

Tijekom boravka na Harvardu stupio je u kontakt s trenerom Andrewom Ruebom, kojemu je postao pomoćnik na volonterskoj bazi. Na taj je način "ponovno otkrio ljubav prema tenisu". Rueb kaže da su svi osjećali da Pecotić nije rekao svoju zadnju riječ na terenu.

- Godinu dana bio je naš volonterski trener i napravio veliku razliku, prenijevši svoje iskustvo mlađim igračima. Jako mi je drago što je napravio još jedan zamah i vratio se na Tour. Matija ima visoki natjecateljski IQ, što ga je učinilo izvrsnim trenerom. Ima i veliko srce i voli naporan rad, a na terenu se kreće u rangu svjetskih klasa - opisao ga je Rueb.

Nakon diplome na Harvardu, slijetale su mu ponude s Wall Streeta, gdje radi i Mario Ančić, na čiju priču njegova neodoljivo podsjeća. Ipak, htio si je dati godinu dana da se još jednom pokuša probiti na Touru. Taj mu je plan poremetio Covid-19, premda Pecotić kaže da je 2020. igrao "tenis života".

I eto ga danas na poziciji direktora, na dinamičnom i odgovornom poslu, gdje radi od 9 do 6 i usput piše nova poglavlja fascinantnog teniskog puta. Kad se krajem 2023. budu skupljale najveće teniske priče godine, zaključuju u ATP-ju, Pecotićeva će sigurno biti među njima.

U nedjelju je prvi put prošao kvalifikacije ATP turnira, a u ponedjeljak je u uobičajeno vrijeme, od devet ujutro, započeo svoj radni tjedan na tržištu kapitala. Malo je tenisač, malo direktor u podružnici tvrtke vrijedne četiri milijarde dolara. Filmska je to priča Matije Pecotića, 784. igrača svijeta, koji je prošlog mjeseca predstavljao hrvatske boje na United Cupu u Australiji - pišu Sportske novosti.

Nevjerojatan paralelni život 33-godišnjaka došao je u fokus nakon što je u dva dana pobijedio dvojicu Amerikanaca čija imena itekako odzvanjaju u teniskim krugovima, Stefana Kozlova i Tennysa Sandgrena. Pobjede su mu otvorile vrata glavnog turnira, u kojem večeras igra protiv Jacka Socka. Slobodan dan na poslu, međutim, nije si mogao priuštiti. Uoči okršaja s bivšim Top 10 igračem, Pecotić se cijeli dan bavio brojkama i transakcijama.

- Kako je bilo proći kvalifikacije? Samo trenutak nevjerice. Uživam i guram dokle mogu. Ako ne uspijem, vratit ću se na posao! - izjavio je za ATP.

Teško je reći koji detalj iz njegove biografije više fascinira. Na Pecotićevom LinkedIn profilu stoji da je od 2013. profesionalni tenisač na Touru, a od 2021. je direktor u kompaniji Wexford Real Estate Investors, koja upravlja portfeljem nekretnina i posluje na 20-ak tržišta u SAD-u i Kanadi.

Osam mjeseci bio prikovan uz krevet

Rođen je u Beogradu, a kao trogodišnjak je s roditeljima, ortopedom Goranom i poznatom psihologinjom Lidijom, preselio na Maltu, gdje se zaljubio u tenis jer ga je otac igrao rekreativno. U srednjoj školi je bio najbolji učenik u matematici i ekonomiji, a onda s Malte preselio u Ameriku, na Sveučilište Princeton. Tenis je u početku bio u drugom planu, sve do četvrte godine kad je briljirao u Sveučilišnoj teniskoj ligi (NCAA), ostvarivši najbolju sezonu Princetona u zadnjih 50 godina. Čak tri puta izabran je za tenisača godine Ivy League, došao je i do broja dva sveučilišne ljestvice, što je bio okidač da se ozbiljnije posveti sportu.

I taman kad se počeo probijati na ATP Touru i kad je stigao na prag ulaska u top 200, uoči Australian Opena 2016. zaustavila ga je operacija bruha, tijekom koje je imao tešku alergijsku reakciju na anesteziju.

- Bio sam prikovan za krevet osam mjeseci. To je promijenilo putanju mojeg teniskog puta i cijele karijere - kaže Pecotić, koji je ljevak i najveća mu je inspiracija Rafa Nadal.

Zdravstvene poteškoće nisu ga pokolebale, naprotiv. Iskoristio je višak vremena i opet se posvetio učenju te nakon diplome na Princetonu (politika i financije) otišao na Harvard Business School, gdje je završio MBA. U dvojbi između profesionalnog tenisa ili poslovne karijere, kaže, izabrao je drugo, premda podvig u Delray Beachu pokazuje da ga teniski još ne treba otpisivati.

- Apsolutno volim ovu igru i znam da neću trajati zauvijek, ipak su mi 33 godine. Pokušavam iskoristiti svaki dan. Kad god stignem, trudim se trenirati svako jutro, pet, šest puta tjedno. Nekad treniram i sa svojim šefom koji ima 70 godina. Ovaj tjedan sam trenirao s tipom koji je u kasnim 50-ima. Katkad morate biti kreativni - objašnjava.

Ponude s Wall Streeta

Tijekom boravka na Harvardu stupio je u kontakt s trenerom Andrewom Ruebom, kojemu je postao pomoćnik na volonterskoj bazi. Na taj je način "ponovno otkrio ljubav prema tenisu". Rueb kaže da su svi osjećali da Pecotić nije rekao svoju zadnju riječ na terenu.

- Godinu dana bio je naš volonterski trener i napravio veliku razliku, prenijevši svoje iskustvo mlađim igračima. Jako mi je drago što je napravio još jedan zamah i vratio se na Tour. Matija ima visoki natjecateljski IQ, što ga je učinilo izvrsnim trenerom. Ima i veliko srce i voli naporan rad, a na terenu se kreće u rangu svjetskih klasa - opisao ga je Rueb.

Nakon diplome na Harvardu, slijetale su mu ponude s Wall Streeta, gdje radi i Mario Ančić, na čiju priču njegova neodoljivo podsjeća. Ipak, htio si je dati godinu dana da se još jednom pokuša probiti na Touru. Taj mu je plan poremetio Covid-19, premda Pecotić kaže da je 2020. igrao "tenis života".

I eto ga danas na poziciji direktora, na dinamičnom i odgovornom poslu, gdje radi od 9 do 6 i usput piše nova poglavlja fascinantnog teniskog puta. Kad se krajem 2023. budu skupljale najveće teniske priče godine, zaključuju u ATP-ju, Pecotićeva će sigurno biti među njima.
