Jedan od suosnivača Microsofta, milijunaš i strastveni istraživač Paul Allen umro je 2018. godine, no njegov istraživački tim kompanije Vulcan Inc na brodu RV Petrel nastavio je bilježiti velike uspjehe u potrazi za ostacima potopljenih brodova širom svijeta. Nakon što su tijekom 2019. locirali čak 11 olupina, u listopadu iste godine su otkrili još tri broda iz Drugog svjetskog rata.
Zahvaljujući ROV i AUV robotima Argus 6000 i Remus 6000, te ostaloj najmodernijoj opremi na svojem istraživačkom brodu, posada Petrela je u Filipinskome moru 29. listopada 2019. pronašla ostatke američkog razarača klase Fletcher USS Johnston DD-557.
Taj su američki ratni brod potopili Japanci 25. listopada 1944. tijekom bitke kod otoka Samare, pri čemu je poginulo 186 članova posade. Spomenuta olupina nalazi se na čak 6220 metara dubine. Ekipa s Petrela tako je ušla u povijest i Guinnessovu knjigu rekorda jer ni jedan ratni brod prije toga nije pronađen na većoj dubini.
U 2019. se obilježila 75. godišnjica velike pobjede saveznika nad Japancima u bitki za zaljev Leyte, a okršaj kod Samare bio je samo jedna od epizoda tog sraza koji je trajao od 23. do 26. listopada na području od 100.000 četvornih milja.
Battle of Leyte Gulf neprijeporno je najveća pomorska bitka Drugog svjetskog rata, štoviše, po nekim standardima to je najveća pomorska bitka u povijesti.
U njoj je sudjelovalo ukupno 800 brodova i 1800 zrakoplova, a poraz Japanaca od brojčano slabije američko-australske flote značio je i slom njihove Carske mornarice.

Locirani japanski nosači
Posada RV Petrela u listopadu 2019. pronašla je ostatke i dvaju japanskih nosača zrakoplova – Akagija i Kage, koji su sudjelovali u napadu na Pearl Harbor 7. prosinca 1941. godine.
Riječ je o dva od četiri velika japanska nosača potopljena tijekom velike bitke za Midway u lipnju 1942. godine. Bombama iz zrakoplova Douglas SBD Dauntless teško oštećeni Kaga potonuo je 4. lipnja 1942. u 19.25, pri čemu je život izgubilo 814 članova posade, a sada se nalazi u mulju na dubini od 5400 metara.
Nosač Akagi, dužine 260 metara, bio je tako teško oštećen da su ga Japanci u zoru 5. lipnja sami potopili. Na njemu je poginuo 221 vojnik, a zapovjednik Taijiro Aoki htio je zajedno s brodom otići na dno. U tome su ga spriječili drugi visoki časnici, te je evakuiran zajedno s ostalim preživjelima na brod Arashi.
Akagi je lociran na dubini od 5490 metara u akvatoriju Papahanaumokuakea, pomorskog nacionalnog spomenika (Marine National Monument).
Oštetio se ROV
ROV robot s Petrela izbliza je snimao videozapise i fotografije ostataka 247 metara dugog Kage, izgrađenog 1921. u Kobeu, ali se pritom oštetio. Zbog toga nije uspio dva dana kasnije fotografirati i snimiti Akagi, nego je samo emitirao sliku uživo. V Petrel.

U studenome 2019. je angažmanom privatne udruge The Lost 52 Project, koju vode podvodni istraživač Tim Taylor i njegova supruga Christine Dennison, poslije 75 godina pronađena olupina američke podmornice klase Tambor iz Drugog svjetskog rata USS Grayback.
Ovu 93,62 metra dugu dizelsko-električnu podmornicu izgrađenu u škveru Electric Boat Company u Grotonu 1941. godine bombama su potopili japanski zrakoplovi Nakajima B5N 27. veljače 1944. godine.
Njezina posada (60 ljudi) prije toga je potopila 14 japanskih brodova ukupne istisnine 63.835 tona, što ih svrstava među najuspješnije US Navy podmorničare u povijesti.
Prema podacima istraživača The Lost 52 Projecta, USS Grayback raspala se na nekoliko dijelova raspršenih na dubini od 430 metara 50 milja južno od Okinawe.

Jedan od suosnivača Microsofta, milijunaš i strastveni istraživač Paul Allen umro je 2018. godine, no njegov istraživački tim kompanije Vulcan Inc na brodu RV Petrel nastavio je bilježiti velike uspjehe u potrazi za ostacima potopljenih brodova širom svijeta. Nakon što su tijekom 2019. locirali čak 11 olupina, u listopadu iste godine su otkrili još tri broda iz Drugog svjetskog rata.
Zahvaljujući ROV i AUV robotima Argus 6000 i Remus 6000, te ostaloj najmodernijoj opremi na svojem istraživačkom brodu, posada Petrela je u Filipinskome moru 29. listopada 2019. pronašla ostatke američkog razarača klase Fletcher USS Johnston DD-557.
Taj su američki ratni brod potopili Japanci 25. listopada 1944. tijekom bitke kod otoka Samare, pri čemu je poginulo 186 članova posade. Spomenuta olupina nalazi se na čak 6220 metara dubine. Ekipa s Petrela tako je ušla u povijest i Guinnessovu knjigu rekorda jer ni jedan ratni brod prije toga nije pronađen na većoj dubini.
U 2019. se obilježila 75. godišnjica velike pobjede saveznika nad Japancima u bitki za zaljev Leyte, a okršaj kod Samare bio je samo jedna od epizoda tog sraza koji je trajao od 23. do 26. listopada na području od 100.000 četvornih milja.
Battle of Leyte Gulf neprijeporno je najveća pomorska bitka Drugog svjetskog rata, štoviše, po nekim standardima to je najveća pomorska bitka u povijesti.
U njoj je sudjelovalo ukupno 800 brodova i 1800 zrakoplova, a poraz Japanaca od brojčano slabije američko-australske flote značio je i slom njihove Carske mornarice.

Locirani japanski nosači
Posada RV Petrela u listopadu 2019. pronašla je ostatke i dvaju japanskih nosača zrakoplova – Akagija i Kage, koji su sudjelovali u napadu na Pearl Harbor 7. prosinca 1941. godine.
Riječ je o dva od četiri velika japanska nosača potopljena tijekom velike bitke za Midway u lipnju 1942. godine. Bombama iz zrakoplova Douglas SBD Dauntless teško oštećeni Kaga potonuo je 4. lipnja 1942. u 19.25, pri čemu je život izgubilo 814 članova posade, a sada se nalazi u mulju na dubini od 5400 metara.
Nosač Akagi, dužine 260 metara, bio je tako teško oštećen da su ga Japanci u zoru 5. lipnja sami potopili. Na njemu je poginuo 221 vojnik, a zapovjednik Taijiro Aoki htio je zajedno s brodom otići na dno. U tome su ga spriječili drugi visoki časnici, te je evakuiran zajedno s ostalim preživjelima na brod Arashi.
Akagi je lociran na dubini od 5490 metara u akvatoriju Papahanaumokuakea, pomorskog nacionalnog spomenika (Marine National Monument).
Oštetio se ROV
ROV robot s Petrela izbliza je snimao videozapise i fotografije ostataka 247 metara dugog Kage, izgrađenog 1921. u Kobeu, ali se pritom oštetio. Zbog toga nije uspio dva dana kasnije fotografirati i snimiti Akagi, nego je samo emitirao sliku uživo. V Petrel.

U studenome 2019. je angažmanom privatne udruge The Lost 52 Project, koju vode podvodni istraživač Tim Taylor i njegova supruga Christine Dennison, poslije 75 godina pronađena olupina američke podmornice klase Tambor iz Drugog svjetskog rata USS Grayback.
Ovu 93,62 metra dugu dizelsko-električnu podmornicu izgrađenu u škveru Electric Boat Company u Grotonu 1941. godine bombama su potopili japanski zrakoplovi Nakajima B5N 27. veljače 1944. godine.
Njezina posada (60 ljudi) prije toga je potopila 14 japanskih brodova ukupne istisnine 63.835 tona, što ih svrstava među najuspješnije US Navy podmorničare u povijesti.
Prema podacima istraživača The Lost 52 Projecta, USS Grayback raspala se na nekoliko dijelova raspršenih na dubini od 430 metara 50 milja južno od Okinawe.
