Pročitao sam o nekakvom parazitu koji ubija ježince, a pronađen je u Mediteranu, pa me zanima kakva je mogućnost da se proširi kod nas i hoćemo li zato ostati bez ježinaca kao što se to dogodilo i s periskama?

Teško je s većom sigurnošću odgovoriti na ovo pitanje jer je za razliku od slučaja s periskama, ova situacija ummnogome kompleksnija. Naime, osnovna razlika je u tome što su periske autohtona mediteranska vrsta, dok je ježinac u glavnoj ulozi ovog slučaja alohtona, invazivna vrsta lat. naziva Diadema setosum. Ovaj dugobodljasti ježinac, da prevedemo njegov engleski naziv, u Mediteranu je prvi put zabilježen 2006. godine kada je nađen na turskim obalama. Njegovo originalno područje obitavanja je Perzijski zaljev i Crveno more, odakle je vjerojatno kroz Sueski kanal ušao u Mediteran i tako postao tzv. lesepsijski migrant, tj. strana invazivna vrsta za Mediteran.

Od prvog pojavljivanja na turskim obalama proširio se cijelim istočnim Mediteranom pa ga danas nalazimo i u Egejskom te, blizu nas, Jonskom moru, kao i južno sve do libijskih obala. S obzirom na to da svi lesepsijski migranti općenito nisu poželjni u Mediteranu, jer mogu negativno utjecati na prirodni ekosustav, s posebnom se pažnjom prati sve što se događa s njima, posebice kada naiđu na nekog neprijatelja koji smanjuje njihovu brojnost. Vrste ježinaca roda Diadema do ulaska dugobodljastog nisu bile prisutne u Mediteranu, ali je zanimljivo kako su već zabilježene masovne smrtnosti ježinaca istog roda.

Alge pojele koralje

Primjerice, osamdesetih godina prošlog stoljeća zabilježena je masovna smrtnost bliskog srodnika D. antillarum u području Karipskog mora i zapadnog Atlantika. Tu vrstu, koja je u tome području bila domaća, napao je jedan vodeni parazit koji je u roku od par mjeseci uništio skoro cijelu populaciju te doveo do toga da su ogromna područja koraljnih grebena pretvorena u livade morskih algi. Naime, alge su glavna hrana ježinaca i u kompleksnom morskom sustavu ježinci su čistili područja koraljnih grebena od viška algi, koje su se nestankom ježinaca razmnožile i prekrile koraljne grebene.

Na nekim mjestima gdje su bile poznate ogromne populacije ježinaca, čak i više od 70 primjeraka po četvornom metru, u roku od par dana nije bilo niti jednog živog. Procjena je bila kako je od prvobitne populacije na nekim mjestima ostalo tek 2 posto. Slična situacija se ponovila prije nekoliko godina opet u zapadnom Atlantiku s tim da je sada situacija zabilježena još zapadnije prema Meksičkom zaljevu. Pretpostavka je kako su se okolišni uvjeti uvelike promijenili i da je kombinacija tih promjena potaknula rast parazita koji su zatim uzrokovali masovnu smrtnost ježinaca.

Drugog bliskog srodnika, D. africanum, također je napao parazit, točnije jedna bakterija, pa je prije desetak godina na Kanarskim otocima nestalo više od 93 posto tamošnje populacije. Kao što sam već naveo, situacija u Mediteranu je drugačija, s obzirom na invazivno podrijetlo ovog ježinca, pa se čak može reći da nam na neki način odgovara jer se rješavamo jedne invazivne vrste koje se na neki drugi način ionako ne bismo mogli riješiti. Ipak, kao što su i mediteranski znanstvenici pretpostavili, parazit zabilježen u Mediteranu krenuo je povratnim putem ježinca te napao autohtonu populaciju u Crvenom moru gdje su već zabilježene masovne smrtnosti.

Prijelaz na ribe

Dodatni problem je u tome što zasad nije poznato što je zapravo uzrokovalo tu smrtnost, jer niti jedan parazit još nije identificiran u Mediteranu pa se ne zna je li uzročnik isti kao i onaj u Atlantiku. Također, ovdje porast temperature vjerojatno nije značajan faktor, s obzirom na to da je temperatura mora u Crvenom moru viša nego u Mediteranu. Nadalje, viđeno je da se mrtvim ježincima hrane mnoge ribe, primjerice špari, što povećava mogućnost širenja uzročnika smrtnosti i na druga područja.

Bilo bi idealno kada bi se patogen usredotočio samo na tu vrstu čime bi se jedna invazivna vrsta istrijebila iz Mediterana, ali poučeni iskustvom znamo da to u prirodi i ne funkcionira baš tako jednostavno. Stoga se mnogi boje da nakon masovne smrtnosti periski i spužvi (napominjem samo one koje su znanstveno proučavane, iako ima saznanja i o drugim vrstama kod kojih su slične situacije zabilježene, ali nisu istraživane) postoji velika opasnost da neke mediteranske vrste zahvati nova bolest koja može završiti s katastrofalnim posljedicama, ne samo za pojedinu vrstu već i veliki dio izrazito osjetljivog morskog hranidbenog lanca.

Pomor ježinaca je počeo prošloga ljeta u Crvenom moru

Pročitao sam o nekakvom parazitu koji ubija ježince, a pronađen je u Mediteranu, pa me zanima kakva je mogućnost da se proširi kod nas i hoćemo li zato ostati bez ježinaca kao što se to dogodilo i s periskama?

Teško je s većom sigurnošću odgovoriti na ovo pitanje jer je za razliku od slučaja s periskama, ova situacija ummnogome kompleksnija. Naime, osnovna razlika je u tome što su periske autohtona mediteranska vrsta, dok je ježinac u glavnoj ulozi ovog slučaja alohtona, invazivna vrsta lat. naziva Diadema setosum. Ovaj dugobodljasti ježinac, da prevedemo njegov engleski naziv, u Mediteranu je prvi put zabilježen 2006. godine kada je nađen na turskim obalama. Njegovo originalno područje obitavanja je Perzijski zaljev i Crveno more, odakle je vjerojatno kroz Sueski kanal ušao u Mediteran i tako postao tzv. lesepsijski migrant, tj. strana invazivna vrsta za Mediteran.

Od prvog pojavljivanja na turskim obalama proširio se cijelim istočnim Mediteranom pa ga danas nalazimo i u Egejskom te, blizu nas, Jonskom moru, kao i južno sve do libijskih obala. S obzirom na to da svi lesepsijski migranti općenito nisu poželjni u Mediteranu, jer mogu negativno utjecati na prirodni ekosustav, s posebnom se pažnjom prati sve što se događa s njima, posebice kada naiđu na nekog neprijatelja koji smanjuje njihovu brojnost. Vrste ježinaca roda Diadema do ulaska dugobodljastog nisu bile prisutne u Mediteranu, ali je zanimljivo kako su već zabilježene masovne smrtnosti ježinaca istog roda.

Alge pojele koralje

Primjerice, osamdesetih godina prošlog stoljeća zabilježena je masovna smrtnost bliskog srodnika D. antillarum u području Karipskog mora i zapadnog Atlantika. Tu vrstu, koja je u tome području bila domaća, napao je jedan vodeni parazit koji je u roku od par mjeseci uništio skoro cijelu populaciju te doveo do toga da su ogromna područja koraljnih grebena pretvorena u livade morskih algi. Naime, alge su glavna hrana ježinaca i u kompleksnom morskom sustavu ježinci su čistili područja koraljnih grebena od viška algi, koje su se nestankom ježinaca razmnožile i prekrile koraljne grebene.

Na nekim mjestima gdje su bile poznate ogromne populacije ježinaca, čak i više od 70 primjeraka po četvornom metru, u roku od par dana nije bilo niti jednog živog. Procjena je bila kako je od prvobitne populacije na nekim mjestima ostalo tek 2 posto. Slična situacija se ponovila prije nekoliko godina opet u zapadnom Atlantiku s tim da je sada situacija zabilježena još zapadnije prema Meksičkom zaljevu. Pretpostavka je kako su se okolišni uvjeti uvelike promijenili i da je kombinacija tih promjena potaknula rast parazita koji su zatim uzrokovali masovnu smrtnost ježinaca.

Drugog bliskog srodnika, D. africanum, također je napao parazit, točnije jedna bakterija, pa je prije desetak godina na Kanarskim otocima nestalo više od 93 posto tamošnje populacije. Kao što sam već naveo, situacija u Mediteranu je drugačija, s obzirom na invazivno podrijetlo ovog ježinca, pa se čak može reći da nam na neki način odgovara jer se rješavamo jedne invazivne vrste koje se na neki drugi način ionako ne bismo mogli riješiti. Ipak, kao što su i mediteranski znanstvenici pretpostavili, parazit zabilježen u Mediteranu krenuo je povratnim putem ježinca te napao autohtonu populaciju u Crvenom moru gdje su već zabilježene masovne smrtnosti.

Prijelaz na ribe

Dodatni problem je u tome što zasad nije poznato što je zapravo uzrokovalo tu smrtnost, jer niti jedan parazit još nije identificiran u Mediteranu pa se ne zna je li uzročnik isti kao i onaj u Atlantiku. Također, ovdje porast temperature vjerojatno nije značajan faktor, s obzirom na to da je temperatura mora u Crvenom moru viša nego u Mediteranu. Nadalje, viđeno je da se mrtvim ježincima hrane mnoge ribe, primjerice špari, što povećava mogućnost širenja uzročnika smrtnosti i na druga područja.

Bilo bi idealno kada bi se patogen usredotočio samo na tu vrstu čime bi se jedna invazivna vrsta istrijebila iz Mediterana, ali poučeni iskustvom znamo da to u prirodi i ne funkcionira baš tako jednostavno. Stoga se mnogi boje da nakon masovne smrtnosti periski i spužvi (napominjem samo one koje su znanstveno proučavane, iako ima saznanja i o drugim vrstama kod kojih su slične situacije zabilježene, ali nisu istraživane) postoji velika opasnost da neke mediteranske vrste zahvati nova bolest koja može završiti s katastrofalnim posljedicama, ne samo za pojedinu vrstu već i veliki dio izrazito osjetljivog morskog hranidbenog lanca.
