Australski ministar energetike pozvao je kućanstva u Novom Južnom Walesu, državi koja uključuje i najveći grad u zemlji Sydney, da ugase svoja svjetla pošto se zemlja suočava s energetskom krizom. Australija je jedan od najvećih svjetskih izvoznika ugljena i ukapljenog prirodnog plina, ali se od prošlog mjeseca bori s krizom električne energije. Tri četvrtine električne energije u zemlji još uvijek se proizvodi pomoću ugljena. Ova zemlja već dugo trpi kritike da ne čini dovoljno kako bi smanjila svoje emisije ulaganjem u obnovljive izvore energije.

Posljednjih tjedana Australija je osjetila pojačan utjecaj poremećaja u opskrbi ugljenom, prekida u nekoliko elektrana na ugljen i rastućih svjetskih cijena energije. I poplave su početkom ove godine pogodile neke rudnike ugljena u Novom Južnom Walesu i Queenslandu, dok su tehnički problemi prekinuli proizvodnju u dva rudnika koji opskrbljuju najveću elektranu na ugljen na tržištu u Novom Južnom Walesu. Otprilike četvrtina australskih kapaciteta za proizvodnju električne energije na ugljen trenutno je izvan pogona zbog neočekivanih prekida i planiranog održavanja.

Neki proizvođači električne energije doživjeli su rast troškova jer su globalne cijene ugljena i plina skočile zbog sankcija Rusiji.
